WOW!!!!! Talk about a blast from the past!!!!! I had this as a kid. I had forgotten all about it. Thanks for posting. I had an awesome time with this!!!!!
I got one for Christmas and it sat in our Harrisburg, PA basement until about 1971. I lobbyed parents hard for the Jimmy Jet--surprised the original supermarket price was $7.77. I thought it cost $13.
My parents threw it out because I had taken it apart to see how it worked. So simple. A light bulb inside a rotating plastic cylinder painted with aerial map, the plastic plane positioned over cylinder steered by the wheel and covered by a screen.
The company was founded by Henry Orenstein in 1951 as De Luxe Toy Creations. De Luxe was a leading manufacturer. De Luxe Toy Creations became De Luxe Premium, and then in the late 50's Mr. Orenstein sold De Luxe to the Philadelphia & Reading Company, a company whose primary business was running railroads. The company was renamed De Luxe Reading Toys at this time.
Boy this would have been a great toy to have as a kid. Opening it as a present on Christmas morning would have been awesome! Seeing it in a catalogue or in a store would have been torture. For boys 4-11, hilarious.
My grandmother bought me one of those for Christmas, there are alot of old classic toys that I wished I kept and took care of. This is was good toy but not much to it and I liked to take everything apart. My brother got some sliver robot for Christmas 1961 with a flashing square dome on top of his head. All our childhood toys are long gone.
Yes, I found what was wriiten on the box to funny,.. that it pointed out the fact that it was for boys's...just shows how things were then....and how much its changed..
Its funny, I was talking to a mail man the other day and he said he remembers comming to my house when we were little and the only thing he remembered was I was a cool girl with a Jimmy Jet
Check my vid of me playing with my Jimmy Jet on Christmas morning, 1962. A year later, I painted it green and threw it out my second story bedroom window. Someone said i wouldn't do it. I sure showed them.
I was showing my childhood photos to a friend and He (jokingly I hope) called me a "rotten bastard" because I had this stuff and his parents would never get him these kinds of toys when he was a kid. My parents were not well-off, and the online inflation calculator says that 7 bucks in 1964 is 46 dollars in 2007 dollars, which was a lot for a struggling 1-income family with 4 kids in '64.
Got mine when I was 5 and I still have it. Perfect condition except for worn chrome. Also still have my Crusader 101 car and Remco Lost in Space Robot. The moral to the story is never throw away your cool toys. These things are worth hundreds of dollars each now, especially the robot.
Hi. I remember when toys let you use your imagination... No personal computers or electronic feldergarb...

I owned one of them. My parents made me give it to my younger cousin, when I turned 11. They said that I was too old to play with it.....

I got my first Jimmy Jet for Christmas, 1963. I got my current one a few years back thanks to my wife who indulged me with a blash-from-the-past toy!

THis was made in the time before the oil embargo of the early 70s,when the price of plastic was dirt cheap.
