This version is great, but after buying and listening to the "SMiLE Sessions Box Set," I like the original version recorded in 1967 slightly better. But both are fantastic!
This album was encoded with 4 channel sound. You needed the Sansui 4 channel receiver or the Dynaco Quadaptor to hear the full sound. They worked very well, but 4 channel did not last long.
The Dynaco Quadaptor is still popular as you can see when you do a search about it.
It is used with Stereo 2 channel receiver and amplifiers and 4 speakers.
I'm going to just say it : having seen Carl do this in concert : Santa Monica Civic , Sept.,'71, I believe his voice was made for this song. Certainly we know how well BW did it, listening as now can from the tapes, but to me, Carl's vocal is just so perfect, there is no contest. Now, the 2004 stage presentation, with Jeff Foskett & Taylor Mills assisting on the vocals, is also well done, but for me, Carl's voice is still, heads above all others. RIP Carl, we miss you. @Wolfsky9 Ditto on the kudos to Carl....he was a great (underline great) vocalist...there are people that would sell you their mother to have his voice.
I like both versions. The Smile version had a rawness to it, but this has this sick bass line that rolls with those low piano notes so perfectly. Oh, thank you Beach Boys for offering so much goodness to us undeserving.
i love this song!!! i just heard the smile version in the last couple weeks and i have to say that one is performed and mixed way better. especially brian's singing. gosh thats heavenly. either way. this song and album are great!
Just listened to the new remaster from Smile - hard pressed to say they improved.. on Perfection.. Oh well, guess I'll have to keep listening to both - Miss Ya Carl *Smile*

On the last part of this song, Brian came about as close to finding pop music's answer to the elusive "The Blue Note" as anybody ever will...

Oddly, 'Smiley Smile' remains my favorite Beach Boys album, perfect or not. But this track is pure mastery! Love these musical giants.....
'beyond belief, a broken man too tough to cry'...that just makes me cry!

I once listened to this while reading something on Denny Wilson. I have never cried that hard in my life before.
