yes, in the nahuatl language that they spoke its mexica (meh-shee-kah) in spanish its Mexicano and in English its Mexican. Aztec is wrong, they never called themselves that. The only thing that comes close to Aztec is Aztecatl, this is what they called themselves when they still lived in Aztlan. When they had settled in the valley of Mexico (modern day mexico city) they no longer called themselves Aztecatl, they began to call themselves Mexica.

Yes, even he, with private memories of ancestors, he has to relate to them in a foreign language. Even his own name can only exist because it has been morphed through the acceptability of the colonial languages, and his antecedents' level of acceptability to the European conquerors. And he's only talking back to 1849, that's 3 plus centuries after first contact, by that time his family & tribe were refugees in their own land. Emulating the existence of so many indigenous people, even today.
