People make me laugh..saying he changed the version or didnt cover it perfect. People have individual and unique styles, he chose his own style and I think pulled it off great.
If you dont like it, then dont listen to it..lol.
I would be the first to criticize but I think you did fine justice to a great song. Oh I know a lot but I don't know who you are as I stopped listening to the radio the very day the Replacements broke up. Nah.. hyperbole.
@11xzxzxz Im a big Mats fan, and Gaslight Anthem fan, check out my Left of the Dial cover! However, I cant match that Brian fallon heart-on-sleeve perfection, maybe in time =p
This guy may make great original music, or even cover other songs well, I don't know. I can, however, confidently say this is the most embarrassing, disgraceful, disgusting rendition of Left of the Dial that could possibly be imagined. Just imagine if this was someone's introduction to the Replacements.....
i cant talk about the original cause i dont know it...but i can tell that he sings it with a lot of heart here and thats what matters...thats why i love him and his music, he always manages to make it sound like he means every word he sings...
I've noticed a pattern with Brian Fallon's acoustic performances. If he uses a pick, he's excellent. If he fingerpicks, it tends to sound off or dissonant.
Regradless, I like his acoustic renditions. This one took some getting used to, though. I wasn't big on it at first, but for some reason I find myself coming back to it again and again.

Kudos for the effort, and hes a Mats fan so I can respect him for that. But this should NOT be an accoustic song. The Westerberg San Diego 93 vid on here is how it should be done.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You know, I really like the Gaslight Anthem but Brian really needs to spend a little time on his acoustic versions and covers. It seems like he doesn't know the timbre and intensity he should be singing with. It really throws me off because I like their records so much. This cover should kill and it doesn't. I feel the same way about his Springsteen cover.

You know, I listen to imperfect music all the time. I grew up listening to sloppy indie rock and punk rock. The point is, when he sings with the acoustic he doesn't sound comfortable. I hear it a lot in punk bands that normally play loud. Hot Water Music is a good example. Their acoustic moments(like in stores and such) always sound a little off. They are an amazing group live too. I do understand by the way. Don't be condescending.
I have to step in here and say you don't really seem to know what you're talking about....you obviously haven't heard Chuck Regans solo material,or Chris Wollards for that matter....its always a good idea to do some research before making yourself come across as clueless.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Take it easy there Jay. Hmmm, I own Chuck's last record. I love the Draft and have their records. I have Chris' recent solo record. I own all the HWM records, have viewed many, many HWM videos on YouTube and have seen the band a number of times. I have been going to shows for 24 years. Ignorance is not my issue. I, unlike you, do not think Brian's vocal delivery is good on many of the Youtube clips when he plays solo. Pretty simple really. If you do not want to accept my opinion, fine.
Well, without sinking to a ' i have been going to shows for blah blah blah' debacle,i shall point out your only invalid point,i never once mentioned Brian's vocal 'skills' i simply butted in when you attempted to compare with Chuck/Chris from HWM and say that they also could not sing in an acoustic/solo basis.
You're perfectly entitled to your opinion...right or wrong, its all personal opinion anyway...unless of course you consider yourself a 'professional' on said subject?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I will leave it at this: Listen to his version of Backstreets and tell me that it is a well sung, well played cover. I can tell you just want to discredit me. If you think his version of that classic song is good, then we will not agree. My love for the Gaslight Anthem or punk rock or any particular musician does not blind me. All my heroes have put in bad performances. Every single one. Joe Strummer on down the line. Punk rock saved my life. The 'professional' quip is silliness.
Again, you're just getting defensive mate,i never once gave an opinion on Brian Fallons singing capabilities and don't patronise me on being 'blind' to who is or has a bad singing moment, especially when done live.I will however state right now that yes, sometimes his voice is a little 'off' at times...i never argued it wasn't.He's obviously doing something right though is he not?
I still reject your opinion on Chuck/Chris being so though. The 'professional' dig was just sarcasm.Punk rock IS my life
the fact that he's soulful enough to do a 'mats tune shows he has "timbre and intensity". he's simply paying tribute to the 'mats and westerberg, not trying to make it his own. let's hear your version of it....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Any person can cover a song. Soul has nothing to do with choice. Listen to the full throated way Chuck or Chris sing on their solo records(pick any tune). Then listen to Brian's rendition of Backstreets or Left of the Dial. It is weak in comparison.
And by the way, I am a very big Gaslight fan as well as a fan of the Replacements, HWM, The Draft, etc etc etc. I just don't hear it the way you all do. Now, to have an opinion I am supposed to produce a better cover myself? Where is your cover that establishes the credibility of your opinion? Gotta love the internet. Nonsense.
I think there's a lot of people on here missing Brian's point

How the fuck does this have twice as many views as the FAR superior Paul Westerberg live versions?
And do you think he actually listens to the fucking radio in 2011? Fuck him.
dashofchutmeg 11 months ago
Love GA.
Why is he ad-libbing the lyrics? Watched a few other live versions of Brian covering this song as well and he does the same.
Surely if he was that influenced by the song it wouldn't need changing?
