  • God, I would be so embarrassed to be U2 after finding out the truth about Peltier...

  • I like this song way better than Vertigo. It's touchy, I know, but still.

  • Glad they did more research on Leonard Peltier and rewrote this song as Vertigo.

  • Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Chris Columbus, Ponce De Leon, Leonard Peltier---all outlawz for their causes. . . . but . .. . what did they fight for??. . . that is THE Question. U will have to ask. I agree 2 disagree

  • I like that they changed the nature of tho the lyrics, but the original way could've still be kept...sounds a bit cooler? I don't know - I like both versions, not necessarily the lyrics of this one and who it was about b/c he was you know...guilty! Lol!

    But it's good all around

  • It's apparently about the Indian bloke who shot some FBI agents. They (U2) changed the lyrics when they realised he really was a criminal dickhead and slowly distanced themselves from the controversy.

  • @bootymanager It's never been proven one way or the other.

Also it's 'Native American' not 'Indian', we're out of the 1800s now pal.

  • wow this sounds exactly like vertigo

  • @viperdude281 It was a song about liberating leonard peltier, a native american convicted of murdering two fbi agents. Realizing Leonard Peltier DID actually kill these two agents, U2 rewrote the song, called it Vertigo, and won a Grammy.

  • @MaxLalib They actually won 3 different grammy awards for the song.

  • @viperdude281 It later became Vertigo

  • @viperdude281 the crucial difference being that this one is GOOD!!!

  • Comment removed

  • the 11 dislikes were obviously O'reilly

  • the jews suffered the Holocaust about 8 million jews...theres lots of books you can read that about. but white america makes adolf hitler look like a angel because america had their Holocaust here they killed and Slaughtered over 30 million native americans indians not all at one time but thats how many were killed and you wont fined that in know histroy books, white america dont wont that truth out...now that is (TRUE FACTS)

  • @rrh73005 Well, actually, you WILL find it in the history books. Google the trail of tears. And it was 300,000, not 30,000,000.

  • "" Lillywhite asked him if he would be able to sing the "Native Son" lyrics in front of an audience, and Bono found the experience too uncomfortable."" What a faggot.

  • This is just Vertigo!!!

  • The global challenges we all face, are much more organic, and any objective solution requires visionary leadership of epic proportions.

    U2AMERICA TURN UP TUESDAY!

  • Random snippets don't work :(

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of Jon Stewart

  • they changed it because they did further research on peltier

  • I lost so much respect with U2 after learning they changed the lyrics, probably to appease their Euro-American audiences.

  • @Lukege15 Or because they were celebrating a murderer and perhaps that's a bad thing to do.

  • @snehring Isn't there this crazy thing in America - "Innocent until proven guilty"? Where's the evidence Columbo? Do you know anything about this case? Probably not.

Besides U2 are making a bigger point with this song: that the Native Americans were/are constantly fucked over. They - no doubt coming from the feelings most Irish have about centuries under British rule - are making a statement about how the First Americans are oppressed in their homeland.

  • @Lukege15 I'm Native American and I find this song embarrassing. Yeah, sure, put a spotlight on how oppressed and "fucked over" my people are...by glorifying a murderer who just HAPPENS to be of my race. That's like writing a song decrying anti-German prejudices by glorifying the Nazis who went to trial "unfairly" by the victorious Allies.

& clearly U2 changed the song because they did do the research. Eventually.

  • @RavnDream I - and the defendants, Amnesty International, the Dalia Lama, Nelson Mandela (who support Peltier) - have yet to see proof that he is a murderer.

"That's like writing a song decrying anti-German prejudices by glorifying the Nazis who went to trial "unfairly" by the victorious Allies."

No it's not. Where was your mind when you wrote that? A disbanded dictatorship which committed genocide is no comparison to a murder convict (innocent or not). What an utterly insane, inept argument.

  • (2) "

"What these people ignore is that Peltier ran from the agents that day at Pine Ridge because he thought the agents were there to arrest him for a previous warrant for his arrest in Wisconsin. The charge? Attempted murder of an off-duty police officer. Then, in 1979, he led a violent prison break attempt that resulted in the death of a fellow inmate."

  • (3) I only put the Nazi comparison to point out how retarded you are. Look, if you really give a damn about my people, go support other causes and other people. NOT someone who for all intents and purposes is an Axe Crazy individual and is currently taking advantage of white guilt. He had celebrities like U2 and Rage Against The Machine fooled, sir. And he's fooled you, too. Besides, if I used any other comparison, you'd pro'lly not even catch the reference. But everyone knows the Nazis.

  • (cont'd from 3) And only Holocaust denialists would actually defend the Nazis and Hitler so the comparison is plain and SIMPLE. For simple-minded self-hating fucktards like yourself to pick up without having to scratch your monkey cranium for longer than 30 seconds. Although, judging from your reaction, you're much more dense than most. I'd call you a troll but that'd be an insult to trolls. Seriously.

  • (4) Oh, y'know what's "utterly insane" and "inept"? You, hiding behind big names like the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela just to back your own argument up. Why? Stand up for yourself, sir. Don't attach your no-name with famous people who don't even know you exist. It's disgusting enough that you apparently support Peltier JUST BECAUSE he's an Indian. That's prejudice of its own kind; you Pre-JUDGE on the basis that he's from a certain race and/or culture. That is irrelevant.

  • @RavnDream You're an idiot.

  • @RavnDream You're an idiot. Attach my name to famous people? Seriously? Are you that goddamn stupid?

Secondly, your use of two accounts is rather amusing,

"I agree with that other guy that definitely isn't me..."

Thirdly, your a Native American (or Indian, as you put it) so your the voice of Native America?

Besides, do you know you he apparently killed? An undercover agent. The FBI made it war, don't start crying when your risks don't pay off.

And lastly, you're a goddamn idiot.

  • @Lukege15 "You're an idiot." Wow, it only took you a whole month to say it, you troll. =P

Oh, and it's "YOU'RE", not "YOUR". Learn to spell! I'd accept that was a typo, but you did it twice. It's quite sad. Apart from your immature, and oftentimes ad hominem choice of words, of course.

  • @RavnDream ""You're an idiot." Wow, it only took you a whole month to say it, you troll. =P

Oh, and it's "YOU'RE", not "YOUR". Learn to spell!"

Are you serious? Look again at what you just quoted. No typo...

"But hey, took you a whole goddamn month to fart it out."

I'm terribly sorry that I have a life outside of YouTube.

And I'm a troll also? Looks like you just conceded defeat. If I made you that upset by replying, you obviously realize that you are wrong. YOU'RE an idiot. /Facepalm.

  • @Lukege15 "your a Native American", & "your the voice..." It's YOU'RE. With the "R" and the "E".

Frankly, I totally forgot about you till today. All you had to do was just toss another ad hominem my direction like you do everyone else who disagrees with you. Take a gander at your own channel comments. Can't deny it. Doesn't require 30 days to put those three simple words together.

You fail twice. I'd facepalm but you're not worth it. ;)

  • @Lukege15 But what REALLY amuses me is that, as I've said, I forgot about you till today. You spent an entire month just to insult me yet again. Clearly you hadn't forgotten me. Dude, get a life, man. Or better yet, get a girlfriend.

  • @Lukege15 ...OR a boyfriend. Whatever your tastes.

  • @Lukege15 Good luck with that. With your horrendous grammar and insane troll logic, "completing" your degree would be a miracle.

  • @RavnDream With all this talk of per-judging (by the way, how does the fact I am both supporting an 'Indian' and disagreeing with another at one time work in your fucked-up little world?), you're doing it yourself - to me.

Though, honestly, I am wasting my time. Is this seriously how you see the world? What a sad individual you are.

  • @Lukege15 'Coz not all Indians are axe-crazy. That's a stereotype. And by your outright dislike of my point of view, clearly you prefer Indians to all fit that stereotype. That makes you an ignorant. That makes you, in a rather humorous twist of irony, a racist. How's that? =)

I wouldn't exactly call myself the sad individual round here, if you're the one who's going around the comments like you're the only one with an opinion.

But hey, took you a whole goddamn month to fart it out.

  • @RavnDream I'm sorry, I just have to say once more how fucking taken back I was by that Nazi comment. I'm guessing you are a WWII obsessive, but still. You may have just have said the most stupid thing I've seen on YouTube ever - and that's definitely saying something.

  • @Lukege15

"Peltier was convicted and sentenced in 1977 to life imprisonment for the murder of two FBI agents at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. That day, the two agents followed a car they thought belonged to a man wanted for robbery and assault. What they found instead was Peltier and two other members of the American Indian Movement who, after fleeing the agents, initiated a shootout that left them both dead."

  • The story behind this song is that U2 was having trouble compiling the song we now know as Vertigo, so Bono took a break. Upon returning, he was asked by Steve Lillywhite if he felt like he could perform the song live, and Bono found doing so uncomfortable, so they rearranged the song and rewrote the lyrics and produced Vertigo.

  • U2 probably scrapped this song to make Vertigo. The music is exactly the same, well almost. Now I love U2 so don't you guys get mad at me ok.

  • Comment removed

  • not a huge u2 guy but i like this song way better than what it became

  • If this was nickelback, they could release this as another single

  • oh SHIT! now I can't choose one of them :(

  • " On The Run..Officer put down the gun..I never wanted to own one..Both of us want to be someone..its so hard for a native son to be free...free...free"

    Pow! Great Song.

Shouldn't surprise anyone though U2 has been calling out the truth since the early 80's.

  • @bornflippy1 Except it wasn't released, because they realized they got their facts wrong... Peltier was guilty

  • @TheBluntNinja damn the rabbit hole goes even deeper..thanks I had no idea..still a great song...and the lyric lines I posted still has resonance with other issues..I appreciate the edit though. cheers.

  • @TheBluntNinja So being framed makes you guilty?

  • Here because of Stewart as well (good song too)

  • @wpfeffer what did Jon Stewart say about this song?

p.s. I'm hear because of Leonard Peltier! search RATM - 'Freedom'.

  • God bless Jon Stewart for ending this nonsense discussion and showing Fox News for the hypocrite racists, that they are.

  • Search Rage Against the Machine - Freedom

  • it's better than vertigo... they should just replace the vertigo lyrics with this one

  • This is literally the best U2 song I've ever heard!

  • here cuz of Jon Stewart pwning o'reilly

  • @Zeplovr333 Me too

  • @Zeplovr333 Jon Stewart sent me here too.

  • @Zeplovr333 ME TOO!!!

  • @Zeplovr333 word

  • @Zeplovr333 go to o'reilly poll center and vote more then once

  • the jews suffered the Holocaust about 8 million jews...theres lots of books you can read that about. but white america makes adolf hitler look like a angel because america had their Holocaust here they killed and Slaughtered over 30 million native americans indians not all at one time but thats how many were killed and you wont fined that in know histroy books, white america dont wont that truth out...now that is (TRUE FACTS)

  • you need to do your research again, (madskillz) he was Wrongfully Accused and wrongfully Convicted of murders he never did and he never was in no prison violent break. this is all the white man lies, the white government lies,

  • @rrh73005 It's so sad that here in 2011 we still have race as an issue.

  • free leonard pelrier

  • Free Leonard Peltier

  • Free Leonard Peltier

  • is this song really recorded by U2 or just composed by a music computer engineer geek who put together because did n''t have any better else to do?

  • @omersexy Yes it is, its the early version of Vertigo ;)

  • 2:17 EPIC

  • bono looks like Pacino and EDGE LOOKS LIKE Janes Gandolfini..this better the vertigo my opinion MY opinion assholes ..cunts

  • bono looks like Pacino and EDGE LOOKS LIKE Janes Gandolfini

  • Should've kept those lyrics!!

  • they should have made a few more guitar changes and released this as a seperate song. its real good i no bono didn't like performing it but it is a great song

  • WOOOW vertigo bass lines.

  • not bad wen it kicks in

  • This is original VERTIGO..before was changed

  • Weak version of "vertigo".

  • I think cracked got the story right here, U2 probably realised the truth behind Leonard Peltier that he was in fact a murderer, and not an oppressed, framed cherokee indian.

  • @tvdownloads

Shut the hell up, he wasnt a murderer. Even the FBI stated that they dont know who shot the Agents, plus the bullets they found in the agents, werent the bullets from Peltier's gun.

  • @tvdownloads If you're going to say something so incredibly baseless, at least get the point of your statement correct. Leonard Peltier was not a Cherokee, and your mistake points to the ignorance of most people on the finer details of his plight.

  • @tvdownloads You're right, Peltier wasn't an oppressed, framed cherokee indian. He IS an oppressed, framed, LAKOTA / CHIPPEWA NATIVE AMERICAN.

all supposed "eyewitnesses" retracted their statements and stated they were coerced by the FBI to lie, the ballistics didn't match, the vehicle didn't match, and the FBI and federal prosecutors admitted there was no conclusive evidence of his guilt. Go to Pine Ridge or any other rez if you want to see the US government at work.

  • it sounds like vertigo

  • Para quienes preguntan, esta es la versión "primaria" de vertigo :)

  • Para quienes preguntan, esta es la versión "primaria" de vertigo :)

  • What? This is just vertigo with different lyrics.

  • @WilFriesen yea exactly...also why its not on any of the albums

  • @WilFriesen this was the original version but because of the lyric subject it was changed to something more commercial therefore you get vertigo

  • @andyhthedrummer

Vertigo is shit, just like much other U2 music after 1996. Most of it before 97 was great. This one is actually better than Vertigo version, but that somehow doesnt surprise me.

  • cracked.com ftw

  • an1 find a place to download this?

  • @Duckcedes

    You can download by DownloadHelper.

  • Just like Vertigo, except this version actually has a fucking meaning and purpose.

  • @TheSkinParade totally agree. Except the music and feel of this version are vastly better to. 'Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel' = the best U2 moment since....since any of us poor bastards can remember.

  • isnt this about that native american guy who killed a cop and for some reason everyone wanted to free him?

  • yeah, i'm here because of cracked

  • U2's obsession with perfection once again ruins a perfect song.

  • @eLECTROLOSIS U2's obsession with perfection CREATED a whole lot of amazing songs. Maybe if they had relesed this one and held back Vertigo people would say the same thing. :-D I think this is defenatly an amazing song. So much of their unreleased / B-side stuff is amazing as well as their original albums. Just my opinion. Greetz.

  • @eLECTROLOSIS yea i like this better than vertigo

  • @eLECTROLOSIS This is no where as good as Vertigo... you people are on crack

  • @eLECTROLOSIS That's your opinion, I think Vertigo is far better than this, I love it though, but Vertigo is just EPIC

  • @Magalink Don't get me wrong, U2 are my favourite band and I'm the only teenager I know that likes them... But i just love the pre-chorus in this version

  • @eLECTROLOSIS This whole "Native Son" and "Xanax and Wine" thing that turned out int different songs issue got me thinking, I remember something happened when they were making and album, and I believe it was with this one, that somehow all their work was stolen o lost... maybe that's the reason why these songs ended up the way they are now? Still, gotta love the "uno, dos, tres catorceeee!! Hello hello, HOLA!!" in every concert people go crazy with that XD

  • @Magalink Yeah exactly... Either way both of the songs would have been massive hits and Vertigo well and truly smashes it live...

  • @eLECTROLOSIS It surely does! 8D

  • @eLECTROLOSIS +1000

  • JACKSON HOLE WYOMING LIVE cnbc

'Is it so hard for a Native Son to be FREE?'

  • vertigooo~

  • cracked

  • Great song. Leaves terrible taste in mouth. Bono was GWB's best friend, so didn't want to have an anti-American government song. No? Well that's sure what it looks like. Then the later version is on an apple ad. Talk about all your hopes and principles going down the toilet. Modern U2 talks none-stop about soul but completely lacks it.

  • @JesusMFingChrist You're a fucking idiot. GWB's best friend. Where do you people fucking come from? Why do you have to exist?

  • @drvertigo There are some of us left. We're real music fans with principles. It wouldn't wash releasing this song, although it is better, much better, with much more soul and a vastly better feel. If bands like U2 compromise themselves, I don't see how that is my fault for objecting to it. Where do YOU FUCKING COME FROM? Brainless-land. If you have a reasoned come back on this subject, that will chaneg my mind...I'm listening... Not got one?

  • I like Vertigo better but this is still cool

  • ohhh you guys. Too bad that conviction is entirely false and made-up by the federal attorneys office.. you know, the one about the off duty cop? yeah they actually admitted some 20 years later that they made that shit up. Also all this evidence they came up with to prove that HE was the ONE in that firefight of oh 30 or so people that killed those 2 FBI agents.. yeah all that? That was later admitted to be false as well.

  • ... But whatever.. you all seem to be so very highly educated so I'm sure you already knew that. What website did you get your, "research" off of?

Why don't you go read a book instead of being spoon-feed what the government wants you to know?

AND YES! The US government can make U2 change a song.. of course they cant directly do this but they can make it unable to be sold in US stores which pretty much eliminates the point of creating a song in todays world doesnt it?

  • So yes, the song is changed because the US government does not want to/virtually can not admit to being wrong or else the constitution will basically fall apart.

And about the jail break... come on, if you were put in prison wrongfully, wouldnt you want out? We're not all tim robbins here (Shawshank reference, im just gonna have to assume that most people reading this now are just bloody fucking ignorant).

  • @TheRhodesguitar OMG you're so clever! Can we be friends? Bellend.

  • Comment removed

  • Yea realm I am lol.

  • Wow, I have no respect for this song.

  • @Telebena why

  • Peltier and his 2 friends ran from the cops, 2 cops are dead, his 2 friends are no longer and he was found with a gun. He ran because he thought the cops wer going to arrest him on another previous charge of attempted murder of an off duty police officer.

    1+1 = let him rot.

  • Haha Cracked, you've done it again.

  • Cracked said he did shoot those agents I believe Cracked. Peltier supporters are wrong cracked is right end of story.

  • why can't they play some of these B- side songs on their tour?!

  • I wouldn't call reading something on cracked as "research"

  • Yeah, here from Cracked.

I like Vertigo more. Both the song and the condition.

  • anyone else here cuz of cracked??

  • fuuuuuuuuuuuuck yeah bitches!

  • @realmproductions count me in.

  • @realmproductions Wow, I'm here exactly becuase of cracked. Funny.

  • @realmproductions haha yeah!

  • i love the Edge singing in this one!!!!

  • You guys are so talented and I'm glad spiritual.pkease keeo the songs xoming. philillie

  • I like Geographers cover of native son way better

  • @Xxnicoroxxx can you go and say that and their channel then!

  • BETTER SO MUCH BETTER!!!

  • Free Leonard Peltier...this is not a nation of freedom! only a nation of cover-ups and lies!

  • Sounds like.... "Lights go down, you'r stars ... jungle in your head".... is Vertigo.

  • U2 is just awesome period

  • Vertigo is a musically superior song as well...

  • is the edge singing at 1:20?

  • yes

  • U2 should have stopped here with the stage production...360 is a bit overdone....

  • I love the "freeee" part at the ending. =D

In fact, IMO this version is better than Vertigo.

  • this version is way better. the band must have felt that the alblum needed a catchy single

  • vertigo show what happens to u2 when they are just aching to be cool. they are special when they let it happen organically.

  • Native Son lyrics were based on the story of Leonard Peltier

  • They couldn't use this version to sell iPods, that's why they dumbed down the lyrics. Marketing geniu$

  • The original version is based on the story of Leonard Peltier, which is very controversial.

  • The music in Vertigo is better. Its fast and exciting, probably the way they wanted it to be. The lyrics in what we got were deeper, actually. This is a good song, but they made the right choice with Vertigo.

  • Yah I actually wish they would have put this on HTDAAB instead.I actually like this better than Vertigo.More organic.

  • cool it was probaly the the first version of vertigo

  • I was hoping this was U2 covering the John Hiatt song.

  • They work in a very complicated way

  • U2 ever =D

  • Edge´s Singing.. beautiful

  • Such a better song than Vertigo. Stop writing vapid songs and stick with your convictions.

  • I agree. I like this much better than Vertigo.
