Thanks. I will be making one of these. but proably using a very large can instead...I had a most difficult time lighting my grill today as I had no wood to start it with like before...This looks like it would work wonderfully!
You can also make one similar to this without the coat hangers. Remove the bottom of the can and cut vertical 1 inch flaps in the bottom sides of the can just below the holes and push these flaps in towards the center of the can.
If you make the spaces large enough and make the cuts on the bottom (opposite the handle), you can simply grab the handle and pull the can straight up and out once the coals are lit (because they shrink and crumble a bit once they are ashed over)
I was thinking though about putting a handle on it incorporating the original paint can handle. Perhaps wrapping another section of coat hanger (a thicker type?) onto the old handle then hook it through a hole in the top?
I would like to use something more sturdy than coat hanger for this step, but can't think of what would work that is around the house.
Try vice grips and/or pliers. All you have to do is tip the can over. Once it's empty of coals it won't weigh as much and therefore a flimsy coat hanger handle would be sufficient (you could always double up the handle, too so it is sturdier).
good video, tks
