0:25, 0:41, 1:20 are one of the big reasons SUP paddlers catch so much hate. He's catching much farther back than they can. To the inattentive surfer he's literally popping up out of no where and essentially stealing their wave. I've got no problem with SUPs but they can be annoying. I deal with it. I'm a kook myself so I'm sure I annoy people just as well on my short board. (I try not to.) We can all agree, however, that dropping in on folks is just not right.
SUP is like driving a snowmobile up to the summit, then wanting the respect of a mountain climber. When you skip the "skill" and "conditioning" part of a sport and then paddle into every wave, don't expect any respect. SUP is dangerous because it brings A TON of non-waterman into the lineup who don't know what they're doing, don't understand the ocean, and can't swim that well.
the good thing about SUP surfing is that moves are coming back to what the sport was all about before the ridiculous monotony of endless off the lip moves; and btw "getting air" on a surfboard is a meaningless hotdog move. as far as his showing up and snaking waves the way he was is concerned its probably lucky he came and left by sled because in many areas he would have gotten his ass kicked in the parking lot upon departure...
@rustysurfer23 first off I love your grammar, and sentence structure! 2nd I'll tell you what tough guy, words are cheap, the Internet is huge and when I get done, you'll be one giant bruise. I surf all over jersey, let me know when and where tough guy and I'll be there and if your expecting 160 lbs with 6 inch arms thats even better...I'm def not a body builder, but I have a very interesting career one I want to share with you! Reqal surfers would like to expand their surfing expirence. I love short board surfing aswell as sup and some times long board if conditions are shitty.
I don't care who you are, or where your from if you come to jersey and try this sh*t your gonna get smacked up and your arms broken! If Andy irons was still alive god rest his soul, he would tell u about his experience at manasquan nj, snakes get skinned and eaten...
@coralandfish Do you know how stupid you sound dude, some of us aren't 160 pounds at best with 6 inch arm diamiter. I'd love to see you fuck with me on a sup...you woulden't. Insert im a tuff guy comment here, i'm sure you are a body builder surfer. shut the fuck up you a punk who couoldent do whit without the whole line up.
@coralandfish Oh really? Last time I was out there I saw quite a few people out on SUPs. Are you going after all of them? And you really have nothing better to do with your time than start fights with people riding them? Wow you have some issues it sounds like.
Just wanna say i surfed this swell in OBX, NC.. actually i sponged it. i just use the term "surfing" vaugly. also i wanna say fuck SUP's. Literally everyone that is in a line up that is SUP'in will try to get every wave there is. which leads to a high amount of disrespect towards them, im not being stereotypical. just saying that every SUPer ive met has been that way. And its a wonder why this dude was gettin snaked on almost every wave shown here
I'm sure he didn't surf that long. Garret us a good guy, I know he wouldn't stay out that long. You guys gotta remember he is a professional in every way.
I'm from Hawaii, Betteryeti I don't even want to say what surfers in Hawaii would say about your commits about SUP surfing. SUP surfing is for training, fun and mostly when the waves are flat. Do you think you can surf third reef pipe on a SUP??? If you can I we all will respect you. We would say don't be so boxy bra!!! tranlation, don't put everything in a box bra! Aloha...
I think he could of backed off a few...But maybe this vidio was edited in a way to make it look like he was a hog..I surfed this swell about 40 miles to the west..what a day...
i didnt think he wouldve dropped in on one guy and taken alot of the waves. if some of those other guys were locals out there, shame on garrett, if not who cares .
he really lucked up....looks like no one else in the video had a clue what surfing was or what to do with a wave. Lots of flailing and missing good waves. And whoever is commenting that if you go to your local break there would be no one doing airs and power surfing, theyd be hopping around? From Huntington to Sebastion Inlet people ARE doing airs! All these negative comments on thrusters or prone is silly. All sweepers are always in the way, and always sketchy in the line up.
@jebzino dude nobody tows at Waimea and dude what you talking about stealing waves, he was the one getting dropped in on, and this is Garrett McNamara, show some respect, and this isn't like he's dropping in on the locals, I'm sure EVERYONE was out that day
sounds to me Garrett know people going be cross when they see Him SUP, maybe this is time him be humble and run with the pack, eh? Easterners don't get this oppurtunity often, maybe he show some respect, eh!
All you haters need to show some respect. Anybody that gets invited to the Eddie and shows up at my break gets respect. Todd Bradley surfs Old Mans and I watch in awe. Rob Macahado showed up on an SUP and I was blown away. I paddle up and say hi. I never had a pro show up at my spot and hog waves, they always show respect to the local break and I learn from them. So, prove me wrong, but all you haters that wrote comments were probably not in RI during this shooting. Aloha O'ahu.
Watch at 1:00. Garrett picked off a set and all the surfers were scrambling not to get caught inside. Riding that wave was the last thing they were thinking about.
One year from now there will be 50 SUP's wherever that video was shot. Its just the way it is, like it or not. You can either complain about it or embrace it but you cant beat it.
I bet at least 5 of the prople who wrote disparaging remarks below have an SUP in 2 years.
Your a fucking fag man. Im from Maui and people who actually surf here only use a standup paddle board for excercise when it's flat. It's straight up gay and they don't belong in the lineup. They snake everybody. And I guarantee you I won't own a stand-up board in the next two years.
I´m from Brazil. I think what you guys are doing is fucking localism. You´re just jealous. I sincerely don´t believe anybody owns the fucking ocean...
At my homebreaks we certainly own our side of the ocean. We have been surfing it for years and years, and to have some random kook paddle out and catch all our waves is a big NO NO. He can have some and be respectful to the surfers that have been surfing it for years, but he is not allowed to catch any wave he wants.
I'm shocked that nobody beat the crap out of this guy and his ski crew. I'm a local New Englander and we rarely get days like this, some of the local Ruggles cats should of jumped him when he got out of the water.
@jebzino I don't know about you, but I'm happy that pros were jumping on the northeast for this swell. It really shut a lot of the westcoast people up about us never having swell. Let alone Garrett McNamara, one of the best big wave surfers ever. And just like Montauk here in NY, everyone and there mothers was out at Ruggles. Its not like he just went in there and stole waves from just the locals.
I agree with some of that. Its not the fact that he's from out of town, i've got nothing against out of towners. Its the maner in which he did it. Pro or not, dude showed up on the best day of the year with a SUP board which is obviously faster then a normal board and was stealing waves from everyone, plain disrespectful no matter how you put it. If any of us showed up to waimea with a ski and towed into everyway while all the locals were paddling they would be pissed.
1. your wrong, they wouldn't be pissed cause you would never make it out to the line up.
2. Thanks ljs4you2 for pointing out what every surfer should know. This is Garrett Mcnamara were talking about. I'm not quite sure you understand what this man does in the water. If Micheal Jordan showed up at a basketball court players would study, watch and learn. Normally local rules do apply but in this instance best day of the year is trumped by the learning opportunity of a lifetime.
You would of never been allowed to surf anywhere near Hawaii if that did happen, Garrett is a well known big wave charger and one of the pioneers of tow in surfing at Jaw's.
surfandsk8,
These waves shut up west coast surfers? These waves would not of even broke at Mavericks, Ghost Tree, Cortes Bank, Lunada Bay and The Wedge. Add another 20' to the face of these waves then you're in the California big wave class. Look up Ghost Tree or Cortes Bank on YouTube, you know about Mavericks.
Wow! I don't think you realize who your talking about. This guy takes down waves that would kill the average surfer. Your talking about one of the most courageous, respected surfers in the history of surfing.
"Vessel means every description of watercraft or other artificial contrivance used, or capable of being used, as a means of transportation on water, other than a public vessel."
I guess surfboards aren't allowed either! A surfboard is "artifical" can be used for "Transportation", and is not a "Public vessel".
and he gets a ride back in on a jet ski, sups are a pain in the ass.i dont care how good you are, not one sweeper i know lets a wave go by, not one, scratchin for em on the outside struggling to get in to any bump the comes. oh yea but its all about the core workout, right?
He was a bit reckless out there and kinda lucky not to rip open someone's back or head but daaaaamn those cutbacks using the paddle are sick!!! I'm buying a paddleboard next season!
TO all of you SUP d-bags I am going to evolve one step higher.... I am going to take my zodiac out with an outboard and go "surf" it.
Just evolving.... Don't get mad if I can do 30 mph .... Just evolving. If surfing can evolve, I am going to be a fat lazy asshole and drink beer in my boat and catch all the waves. Everything in the last 50 yrs that has "evolved" seems to make man fatter/dumber. Maybe i'll get a jet driven surfboard! You realize SUPs make you look like a d-bag.
I dont see the SUP as any real evolution of anything. Here in North Florida alot of guys are out with SUP's. I say ride what you want, but it personally doesnt look like as much fun as taking out a regular surfboard. BTW I can catch a wave before an SUP on my 10'0 Longboard. Just faster.
If you think you can paddle a longboard faster than a SUP you are truly deluded, my friend. Maybe you can paddle faster than a beginner, but I will wager $1000 you can't paddle faster than a good stand-up paddler. Just faster, dude. And in case you're ADD, um, the video associated with this thread is all the proof you need. I longboarded for 30 years before I ever SUP'ed. No f-ing way is a prone longboard faster. Not even close.
Im not sure if i am faster or not, but I will catch a wave as far out as any of the paddle boarders here where I live. ADD? This video doesnt show any longboarders going after the same waves so I am not sure of what proof you are talking about. Like I said ride what you want.
This dialog is going to be a total riot in historical retrospective. Prone surfers are *rapidly* becoming obsolete. Not only is SUP the only segment of surfing that's actually growing, but it's the fastest growing water sport of any kind at present. Put that in your local RI dirtbag pipe and smoke it. It's called evolution: stand up, use tools. Oh but wait there seems to be a bunch of you committed to remaining reptiles. Well, see you on the other side of the Natural Selection gap.
Can you pull off a modern aerial maneuver on a SUP? Or any modern shortboard move for that matter? SUP's are replacing "prone surfers?" A prone surfer would be a body boarder... and I don't think you can say SUP's are replacing modern surfing, they're just becoming another way to ride waves. Riding on a SUP is not evolving. It's taking a step backward. Yes it may be a more efficient way to get on a wave, but you can't do half the things on a SUP that you can do on a modern surfboard.
I would say that most people's idea of what you can do on a modern surfboard has been completely corrupted by surf comix and surf videos. Sure, aerials, etc etc. Go to your local break -- how many people are actually doing them? How many days a year do the conditions even support them? People hop around like a dork for a few seconds with a Kelly Slater vid in their head... SUP allows people to exploit the waves that most of us actually have. PS they're SUPing at pipe and teahupoo.
Cool so I'll give up modern surfboard riding so that I can just ride a straight line and do a cutback at the end. So it's a good thing he was on a SUP this day, really allowed him to exploit the waves and get some sick cover ups, unlike the other guys who were too busy hopping around like dorks....
I'm not arguing that SUPing doesn't have it's advantages, I'm just saying that a statement that SUP is the evolution of surfing and everything else is obsolete is absolutely absurd.
You probably will, actually. Out here around Little Dume, I can't even count the number of hardened locals who've made the switch and never looked back. Seriously. It's like tow-in; the only people who complain about it are the ones who haven't tried it yet, the ones who are wedded to the Old Postures. It might not make for flashy surf videos, but SUP is a superior way to connect with waves -- with the ocean -- than before. Me, I surf for my own enjoyment, not to claim some "sick coverup".
Haha this is getting ridiciulous. I thought you surfed to exploit the waves? Or wait, you surf for your own enjoyment now? So do I. And getting a "sick coverup" is a very enjoyable experience. Again, I'm not arguing that SUPing doesn't have its advantages. It does. I've ridden SUP and it can be fun, except when guys are paddling behind my friends and I, trying to go for waves and wiping out so their board becomes a projectile, hitting us. But A well rounded surfer surfs everything. not just SUP.
As primarily a SUP surfer, I agree with you wholeheartedly. SUP just allows a wider variety of waves and conditions (typically worse) and also riders (also typically not amazing surfers like Garrett McNamara, Robby Naish, Kainoa, etc). It is evolution in the sense of progress but nothing- nothing will ever replace surfing's purity. I am always working on my traditional surfing more and more, but the fact that I can stay warmer, catch more waves and avoid crowds keeps me SUPing
All these crybabies, I was born & raised in Newport and there are no rules as to who and what type of craft you use riding waves. I remember way back when hardly anyone would surf at Ruggles, only the locals. It's these crybabies who don't know how to drop-in and get a wave who complain. They can only surf when there is nobody around to laugh at them. I know every rock out there.
Sid, Apeman, Jinx, Rinks, and so many other locals would welcome any Pro. Great Vids, Props. !
Wouldn't it be fun if all fifty guys in the lineup were SUP? I grew up with the "no longboarders allowed at this spot. Now GM is given a free pass with the ultimate Gary Gun? To me it's a sign that travelling pros have lost all respect for locals. You have Skis. Why not go offshore?
jonchino do you have any idea how small that board is by SUP standards? The fact that he can stand on it at all and paddle is amazing. But that is good you just validated the fact that he was not catching all the waves only 50%. Sort of reminds me of the killer whale that ate the great white shark off the Cali coast. All the great whites should complain that they are the apex predators and the killer whale should go somewhere else. Evolve man stood up for a reason.
SUP is banned on several beaches in cape cod for a very good reason, when they wipe out their boards can shatter peoples skulls, yeah sure so can most longboards and the unlucky shortboard, but when GM dropped in on almost half a dozen people what would have happened if he wiped out and his board clocked on of them in the jaw? glad my lineup wasnt polluted by pros or SUP
ah, well that makes sense there were a ton of people out there and ill bet it got nasty (do you have a guess i couldnt tell) glad where i surfed there were 4 guys out, what kind of cam did u use the video is good quality
hahah moondoggie, do you really call that ripping? you should of seen him fall on 50% of the waves he tried for.... way before he caught them due to loss of balance!! wheres the video of that?
Get over it! You guys are just pissed because he makes all the surfers look like a bunch of kooks in the video. You should be glad he was out ripping it gave you something to watch while you were soaking.
It looks like he's getting on a rescue sled, but he isn't. Those jet skis actually didn't have rescue sleds at all I believe. He's just putting his paddle back on the jet ski there and his board maybe? Not sure. That's how he left. They must have launched the skis from somewhere else.
little too harsh don't you think. we are all surfers here. I do agree though that just because you can get on the wave first definately doesn't mean you should take all the waves. Respect locals!!!
Nice job, Garrett, Ian and your loser ski crew. NE surfers get great waves a handful of days per year and you jerkoffs roll up, on a standout day, showing not one bit of respect to the surfers in the water. On top of it, you roll thru the lineup on a friggin' standup paddle board, just to rub it in a little bit more...Pure fucking arrogance. Shows what a dickhead you truly are!
I couldn't agree with you more. Total arrogance and no respect...Hope they get what's coming to them. Karma works in mysterious ways!
For the record, stay the fuck out of New England waters all you Hawaiian transplants....have fun on your own turf and let us have fun on ours. Don't bring your stupid gay ass SUP boards, jet skis, or your photographers here again...we don't want it...nuff said biotches
Garrett definitely was a wave hog. How about we all hop on a plane and go to Hawaii on an epic swell and just start padding into every wave without a care for the locals. I respect his skills and abilities for surfing in such conditions, especially on an ocean sweeper, but F*ck him!
Do you think Garrett feels bad watching a video of himself taking some of the best waves from locals. Stand up can be done right, but this kinda reminds me of a bully stealing candy from kids.
0:25, 0:41, 1:20 are one of the big reasons SUP paddlers catch so much hate. He's catching much farther back than they can.
You realize SUPs make you look like a d-bag.
dukeblaster 2 years ago
I dont see the SUP as any real evolution of anything. Here in North Florida alot of guys are out with SUP's. I say ride what you want, but it personally doesnt look like as much fun as taking out a regular surfboard. BTW I can catch a wave before an SUP on my 10'0 Longboard. Just faster.
vjsurfandmusic 2 years ago
If you think you can paddle a longboard faster than a SUP you are truly deluded, my friend. Maybe you can paddle faster than a beginner, but I will wager $1000 you can't paddle faster than a good stand-up paddler. Just faster, dude. And in case you're ADD, um, the video associated with this thread is all the proof you need. I longboarded for 30 years before I ever SUP'ed. No f-ing way is a prone longboard faster. Not even close.
betteryeti 2 years ago

Well, see you on the other side of the Natural Selection gap.
betteryeti 2 years ago
Can you pull off a modern aerial maneuver on a SUP? Or any modern shortboard move for that matter? SUP's are replacing "prone surfers?" A prone surfer would be a body boarder... and I don't think you can say SUP's are replacing modern surfing, they're just becoming another way to ride waves. Riding on a SUP is not evolving. It's taking a step backward. Yes it may be a more efficient way to get on a wave, but you can't do half the things on a SUP that you can do on a modern surfboard.
RobertGoulet298 2 years ago 7
I would say that most people's idea of what you can do on a modern surfboard has been completely corrupted by surf comix and surf videos. Sure, aerials, etc etc. Go to your local break -- how many people are actually doing them? How many days a year do the conditions even support them? People hop around like a dork for a few seconds with a Kelly Slater vid in their head... SUP allows people to exploit the waves that most of us actually have. PS they're SUPing at pipe and teahupoo.
betteryeti 2 years ago
Cool so I'll give up modern surfboard riding so that I can just ride a straight line and do a cutback at the end. So it's a good thing he was on a SUP this day, really allowed him to exploit the waves and get some sick cover ups, unlike the other guys who were too busy hopping around like dorks....
I'm not arguing that SUPing doesn't have it's advantages, I'm just saying that a statement that SUP is the evolution of surfing and everything else is obsolete is absolutely absurd.
RobertGoulet298 2 years ago 3
You probably will, actually. Out here around Little Dume, I can't even count the number of hardened locals who've made the switch and never looked back. Seriously. It's like tow-in; the only people who complain about it are the ones who haven't tried it yet, the ones who are wedded to the Old Postures. It might not make for flashy surf videos, but SUP is a superior way to connect with waves -- with the ocean -- than before. Me, I surf for my own enjoyment, not to claim some "sick coverup".
betteryeti 2 years ago
Haha this is getting ridiciulous. I thought you surfed to exploit the waves? Or wait, you surf for your own enjoyment now? So do I. And getting a "sick coverup" is a very enjoyable experience. Again, I'm not arguing that SUPing doesn't have its advantages. It does. I've ridden SUP and it can be fun, except when guys are paddling behind my friends and I, trying to go for waves and wiping out so their board becomes a projectile, hitting us. But A well rounded surfer surfs everything. not just SUP.
RobertGoulet298 2 years ago 5
@RobertGoulet298

Why not go offshore?
titls 2 years ago
jonchino do you have any idea how small that board is by SUP standards? The fact that he can stand on it at all and paddle is amazing. But that is good you just validated the fact that he was not catching all the waves only 50%. Sort of reminds me of the killer whale that ate the great white shark off the Cali coast. All the great whites should complain that they are the apex predators and the killer whale should go somewhere else. Evolve man stood up for a reason.
moondoggie8866 2 years ago 2
SUP is banned on several beaches in cape cod for a very good reason, when they wipe out their boards can shatter peoples skulls, yeah sure so can most longboards and the unlucky shortboard, but when GM dropped in on almost half a dozen people what would have happened if he wiped out and his board clocked on of them in the jaw? glad my lineup wasnt polluted by pros or SUP
user208780 2 years ago
I think It was mostly him being dropped in on this day.
RobertGoulet298 2 years ago
ah, well that makes sense there were a ton of people out there and ill bet it got nasty (do you have a guess i couldnt tell) glad where i surfed there were 4 guys out, what kind of cam did u use the video is good quality
user208780 2 years ago
Yeah it was really really crowded. Hard for anyone who knew the spot well to be in the right spot for shifting conditions.
I shoot with a Canon Xh-a1 Youtube compression does not do the full HD quality justice....

hahah moondoggie, do you really call that ripping? you should of seen him fall on 50% of the waves he tried for.... way before he caught them due to loss of balance!! wheres the video of that?
jonchino 2 years ago
Get over it! You guys are just pissed because he makes all the surfers look like a bunch of kooks in the video. You should be glad he was out ripping it gave you something to watch while you were soaking.

the wave he eats shit, his leash came off and the ski pick him up. He should of went else where.....

why does he need a jet-ski when he's riding a tanker? Don't know the guy but he looks like he sucks balls.... alot.
mangusmango 2 years ago
Jet skis were for a camera crew I believe. Slightly confused by your comment. A jet ski doesn't really serve the same purpose as a SUP does it?
RobertGoulet298 2 years ago
why's he getting on the rescue board then?
mangusmango 2 years ago
It looks like he's getting on a rescue sled, but he isn't. Those jet skis actually didn't have rescue sleds at all I believe. He's just putting his paddle back on the jet ski there and his board maybe? Not sure. That's how he left. They must have launched the skis from somewhere else.
RobertGoulet298 2 years ago
little too harsh don't you think. we are all surfers here. I do agree though that just because you can get on the wave first definately doesn't mean you should take all the waves. Respect locals!!!
wildwesacoustics 2 years ago 14
@wildwesacoustics the video is edited so how do you know he is taking all the waves???
jrp94 1 year ago
Nice job, Garrett, Ian and your loser ski crew. NE surfers get great waves a handful of days per year and you jerkoffs roll up, on a standout day, showing not one bit of respect to the surfers in the water. On top of it, you roll thru the lineup on a friggin' standup paddle board, just to rub it in a little bit more...Pure fucking arrogance. Shows what a dickhead you truly are!
doscubres 2 years ago 3
I couldn't agree with you more. Total arrogance and no respect...Hope they get what's coming to them. Karma works in mysterious ways!
For the record, stay the fuck out of New England waters all you Hawaiian transplants....have fun on your own turf and let us have fun on ours. Don't bring your stupid gay ass SUP boards, jet skis, or your photographers here again...we don't want it...nuff said biotches
SurferNick1981 2 years ago
Garrett definitely was a wave hog. How about we all hop on a plane and go to Hawaii on an epic swell and just start padding into every wave without a care for the locals. I respect his skills and abilities for surfing in such conditions, especially on an ocean sweeper, but F*ck him!

Do you think Garrett feels bad watching a video of himself taking some of the best waves from locals. Stand up can be done right, but this kinda reminds me of a bully stealing candy from kids.
