  • Bernie's Tune was written by Bernie Miller around 1952. Bernie Miller died not long after and not much is known about him.

  • Gerry was th best on the big horn. He died too young.

  • Who wrote this song? This was version. fuckin awesome I also heard a kenny darvin version. That one was amazing.

  • Wow, how nicely done. Gerry is boss on the bari. Great arrangement of this jazz classic. Thanks for posting - really thanks!

  • l'exellent gerry mulligan!!super document!!

  • I am 17 and I'm going to study music in Manchester next year. I play various instruments, trombone being my strongest and have had a very classically based education. I enjoy playing everything from Sibelius to Bob Marley and I absolutely love Gerry Mulligan, but I still love (good) Hip Hop too. Thing is, what they say about Hip Hop is what they used to say about blues in the beginning of the 20th century; simple with no musical complexity. They don't realise that that is the beauty of it.

  • I model every note I play on Bari after Gerry...

  • gnarly Bari solo.

  • My teacher and mentor John..well..i.m not a be bop guy anymore, but he gave me my Love for the Flügelhorn Sound.....YEAH !! John ..THANK YOU MAN !!!!! Rip.

  • Awesome.TY for posting.

  • They all are great stars !

  • @lisafrankfashion

Lots of folks thing what they see on tv is hiphop.. those people are stupid.

  • Great Jazz actually gets better and better with repeated listening! The more I listen to certain players like Charlie Parker or Gerry Mulligan the more you can soak in.

  • brilliant footage

  • I like jazz because when you listen to it live it doesn't suck, sometimes it actually gets better.. Unlike all the mainstream rappers who have to use autotune.

  • Am doing a radio programme in Aberdeen playing music from 1926 - 19561 (Real Retro Sketchbook) Gerry Mulligan fits into this and I have loads of him and Jelly Roll Morton, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie plus plenty of others. Listen in to the show on SHMU community Radio 30th October 12-2pm...UK time!!

  • masterful!

  • I love the song, I love the year and I love the atmosphere it creates.

  • rap, pop, and hip hop can go suck a big one. Jazz and Classic Rock is actually real music, and people are too stupid to realize that. i am a bari sax player in my highschool jazz band and i enjoy this music so much more than the autotuned crap people listen to now adays.

  • @DaRkGiNg3R you say it man. todays music is all about money and stupidity...

  • @DaRkGiNg3R Exactly the same, amen

  • @DaRkGiNg3R Hip Hop isn't all bad, listen to 'a tribe called quest' there is some actual musical talent around, however I agree with the autotune crap. It S U C K S.

  • A true jazz classic.

  • Just picked up 16 Gerry Mulligan LP's at a garage sale.Wow! All American pressings!!

  • a beautiful rendition. It's great to see Mulligan and Brookmeyer in their young days. Great team!

  • Awesome

  • sooo good music...

  • Mulligan: pure Aries

  • many people think jazz has died out, but i beg to differ!

  • @deathmachine392 Well, I haven't met any, but then I haven't met any who know what jazz is in these here Parts!!

  • Valve trombone; cheater... ;p

  • @andhemills I feel you are totally ignorant of this beautiful great sounding instrument . Its quite different from a slide trombone, its a cross between a frenchhorn, the valves, and a basstrumpet. It doesn't aim to cheat at all but one can with ease play in 12 different keys, if thats cheating, maybe : get one learn and enjoy it.

  • @valvetrom Don't get your panties in a bunch. You seem old enough to have encountered the definition of ignorance and by the fact that I commented on a video featuring a valve trombone brings into question your presupposition of my ignorance of the matter. I know text doesn't lend well to sarcasm, hence the smiley face. Why don't you get one and teach me to enjoy it? I play slide trombone and will never have it any other way in this lifetime. Though, I may pick up a trumpet.

  • @andhemills Nice man, my friend also plays trombone (slide) and I think its great though I'm a saxophonist myself. BTW why dont you try the Bass Trumpet? It uses the same MP as the Trombone, that way you don't have to worry about losing your trombone embouchure.

  • @RoGuExXxAsSaSiN I've actually been considering to retrofit a trumpet mouthpiece on my trombone to produce higher tones, which can be difficult to produce on the bone. I like to use the bone as a lead instrument. For instance, check out my vid Cosmo Canyon. Peace!

  • never realized brookmeyer had a dzzy g cheek thing going on.

  • Calico992:

The sax in the back is not Stan Getz. His name is Zoot Sims

  • Stan Getz in the back?!?!??! Also a lot of white horn players! (nothing wrong with that! just commenting!)

  • Please dont disrespect Hip Hop music! Shure most of todays Hip Hop is realy stupid but stuff like "A Tripe called Quest" or so first opened my ears for Jazz music because they sampled alot of it.

  • A Tribe Called Quest are brilliant. -- But i can completely understand why people think it's tripe. All genre's of music have their down points... rap and hip hop just have a lot of them. Lot of greats though

  • The best musician in this video is Zoot Sims (tenor)!!!!

  • Sorry, Gerry's still my main man

  • Very nice, Gerry has such a great sense of rhythm. Jon Eardley's solo is nice, sounds like a bit of influence from Dizzy. Never seen a valve trombone, cool.

  • Woah, Jon Eardley on film! How rare!

  • Amen!

  • This is the Gerry Mulligan Show basically.....I 'm not too crazy with the polyphony here..it sounds sloppy. The only ones to solo really should be Mulligan and Sims.Eardley is not together.Wish there were footage of Mulligan,Baker and Konitz!

  • Is that in cool jazz period??

  • yes

  • Yeah my environment is polluted with Hip-Hop help me

    (I'm 14 :D)

  • ditto im 14 and hip hop sucks

  • ure right!

    dude ur so damn right

    iam 14 too

    i hate hip hop also

i like listening to this music

its like you go into that time

but i also listen rock and harder stuff like silverstein and taking back sunday

  • Lol. You just really don't know Hip Hop.

I like listening both good Jazz and Hip Hop. Can't compare thys styles, but mixing them together gives awesomes stuffs. Do Buckshot Lefonque suck? And what about groups such as A tribe Called Quest, Gangstar or US3 (and others)?? Do they suck as well??

Na you can't say Hip Hop sucks like that, you just don't know it (without disrespect)

  • "Have you listened to the radio lately? Have you heard the canned, frozen and processed product being dished up to the world as American popular music today?"

    -Billy Joel

  • @HelloYoutoobers I'm 14 also!!! I'm a freshman and I play Baritone Sax in my High School Jazz Band. We're playing this song in our selection today in a competition at the State University. I have to live up to Gerry Mulligan's standards! Great... -.-

  • @izckl You're gay.

  • @izckl join a jazz band

  • i was about 16 when i heard this guess it is deja vu im now 71

  • your generation had the best music, you lucky "old" guys!! :-) we poor "baby boom children" just had the pop of the 80s....

    too sad! :(

  • They had the best music, but they had to put up with a lot more cigarette smoke.

How can I see the rest of this concert? Is there a DVD available? I didn't realize the 1950s Mulligan Sextet had ever been filmed.

  • mrmusichead-I shall be 71 come August 10. This has remained wit me all these years as my favourite Gerry Mulligan tune. Cheers, and great listening to you.

  • I was about 3 when I heard this first, I'm 51 now. My dad had a 7" record, I can't remember who it was playing it, and I used to want it on all the time. This tune has never left me and I catch myself whistling it very often.

  • @mrmusichead

And now you're 73. Hope you're doing well.

    With greetings from Iran

  • @mrmusichead i heard this when i was 17 and i thought deja vu

  • Very smooth..West coast style,and very,very COOL.Nice indeed.

  • a little bit of dixieland in there. I like it!!

  • For a more dixieland approach, check out the version (on YouTube) of the Anachronic Jazz Band from 1977 -- those guys have a phenomenal sense of style and do bebop tunes etc. all in dixieland/1920's danceband style. Great stuff!

  • Bliss, pure bliss, The harmony is great. Thanks for posting this

  • god these guys are simply amazing, watching mulligan solo makes me want to shred away on my bari

  • Zoot got left out.

  • haha!!! the trumpeter is all dizzy (cheeks wise)

  • You bet it is, it's the master himself, Bob Brookmeyer.

  • Is that a valve trombone? (can't tell)

  • yep

  • aw-some

  • Pity Zoot didn't solo...

  • Just beautiful. Old memories of my most played compilation in the 50ies and still preferred. Thanks !!

  • man oh man its videos like this that make me think, just when i want to go with alto, i watch this and think now i wanna go with bari! its to much pressure!

  • One of his very finest pieces.I still love it after 50 years. Thanks for making this gem available to us.

  • I love this good old westcoast stuff...

  • ZOOT SIMS! WOOO!

  • Marvelous stuff! Line-up: Mulligan, with Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone), Zoot Sims (tenor sax), Jon Eardly (trumpet), (probably) Bill Brow (bass) and Dave Bailey (drums).
