  • i always tell my children that this is how music sounded before you had ipods. so they say ipods killed good music lol

  • I would like to ask the three viewers that did not like this a question. Was it just to good for you or what? This was awesome and if you did not like this you don't have a good ear for music is all that I can say for you! This is how it should be done, some of the best I have ever heard!!!

  • i grew up near the kentucky border had friends there with bluegrass familys and went to festivals .some of the best bluegrass i ever heard. This was one of the first song that really got me into it.love this song whitley an stanley always sounded great together .

  • This is just so good.

  • Yes, Keith, I miss you.

  • this is beautiful!!!!

  • Just happened on your channel - This is wonderful! Some real oldies, this is so good. Loved Keith Whitley - anything of his. He was very young here. Thanks for sharing. Gwen

  • great song, makes me think bout hearing the neighbors playing bluegrass music in the yard on Saturday nights.

  • greatest performance i've ever heared in my life peroid!

  • I love the old time Bluegrass but right now this is my Fave. I'm addicted lol.

  • I in all my 24 years am curious as to what the hell happened to music like this. most of today's music cant hold a candle to what i'm hearing.

  • @MrCowboyo you need to listen to bluegrass more, this sound is alive and well in that genre

  • lol i didn't recognize him without all the hair. Too bad there aren't any radio stations around Dallas that play good stuff like this. I heard "Don't Close Your Eyes" -once- on 99.5 FM, but that was it. most of what they play is either rock-a-billy type music, or it has a hip-hop beat. I miss the old-fashioned, true-blue country music.

  • I got to hear Keith do a concert from the front porch of my house when he was playing at a local elementary school in our home town of Sandy Hook. This was just before or after Lorrie and him got married. I wasn't allowed to go to the concert because I was to young. But could hear it plainly from the front porch.

  • This is probably the single greatest performance of all time...

  • Keith is great, but imagine Carter singing it...

  • What ever happend to Renfro Proffitt ( the lead guitar picker) Is he still living and does he still do performances? Great video! Thanks for posting.

  • fantastic

  • Great Song ! Love it ! He sings it beautifully ! The playing is really awesome, top class ! A wonderful version of this old classic ! Excellent Video ! Thank you so much justmusicandme for sharing ! Many thanks to goodmusic70 for this fantastic upload ! 5*****+

  • @1968Randall i used to live in virginia when i was a kid--and was dragged by my parents to every bluegrass festival in the area. little did i know i was watching history take place. what i wouldn't give to go back to watching bluegrass--going fishing and picking blackberries for my mom to make a pie?

  • Ralph Stanley!!!!!

  • LOVE IT ...

  • now this is music at its best

  • WOW!!!

some OLD SCHOOL Keith Whitley here :)

    NICE post

  • love this!

  • i love this song good stuff

  • This is before my time, but it's timeless!Everytime i hear that high lonesome sound it makes me yearn for the hills of home.If i go a little while without hearing bluegrass that banjo sends chills up my spine everytime.

  • Keith at his best,IMO.

  • Nothing has ever surpassed this Bluegrass sound - all the hot-shot gnat-note picking never sounds this good.

  • oh this was excellent!!! just call me total hick at heart!! it just dont get no better than this!! loved this!!!

  • just fsntastic music done by top notch talent - I rate this a 10+++

  • Yes Keith we miss you....

  • Great music

  • there is no music made in this generation that can compare to this

  • It will soon be 22 yrs since you left us,you bet I miss you and your great music.

  • i shoulda been born in another time. love this so much.

  • Good song, great talent. !!

  • overwhelming

  • Beautiful.

  • Don't forget about western Virginia. God bless you and all of yours.(;-}). Randall.

  • Talent is what you find in Eastern Kentucky when it comes to Bluegrass Music. I love this so much. Keith I miss you and so does the rest of the world especially all of us from Elliott County Kentucky.

  • It doesn't get any better than this for musicians, singers, harmony and just a beautiful song. Yes we miss you keith!!!

  • wow wow wow wow seriously

  • Damn man...Keith and Ralph together is just absolutely amazin'! It's really hard to find music like this these days cuz everything has gone poppy and queer. Good ole Bluegrass and Country Western is only a thing of taboo and it's the saddest thing ever.

  • he is fantastic . i justr discover him .. yes folk music misses someone !!!

    from Bemlgium with love

    Willy

  • The high pitch you hear is High Tenor and that is Ralph Stanley. I used to sit and listen to him live sitting on his front porch when I was much much younger. My mother is a Stanley and we all lived within a few miles of each other. I miss those days so much. Wish it could be like that now. Carter

  • @watch129 well i bet carter and keith n john whitley are all singing right now

  • i have viewed this more than a dozen times in the course of three days, it...does....not....get....old. pretty much some of the best stuff i think ive ever heard, almost across ANY genre...and there is plenty of other GOOD STUFF out there. usually when it's REALLY good, though, it transcends genre, and is timeless!

  • every time i hear this song it's like someone is squeezing my heart. their voices are wonderful together!

  • Great stuff

  • what's the highest vocal called? like the older man who sings the beautiful high notes that are shaky but on purpose? i know i sound dumb lol, but i absolutely adore that part

  • @LaurieLoves High Tenor.

  • Beautiful.

  • Outstanding.

  • good music

  • Some great harmony go'n on here. Kieth looks so different.

  • Love It..My Kind Of Music.. And Two Of The Best Ralph Stanley And Keith Whitley..! Awesome Voices!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Outro harmony should be transcribed, and studied by a quantum physics Phd. Just mind blowing and hair raising. Hope nobody minds me saying, but I think keith's singing is even more soulful here with Ralph Stanley than it was later in his mainstream country career. It's just very unforced and I could listen to this 24 hours a day.

  • Their harmony is absolutely beautiful.

  • This is one of the greatest renditions of a heart wrenching song I have ever heard.

Sorrow follows some people around and drowns them. A P had his ghost as well but it did not kill him. I miss you both. I wish I had known AP and Keith.

I often wonder Will you miss me when I'm gone.

  • my grandpa played with ralph and kieth at renfro valley ky.

  • My kind of music !

  • great

  • There that night--unforgettable. Didn't even realize Keith, who seemed so perfect, was just filling in. Thought he was such a natural, couldn't get over it when he joined J.D. Crowe..great album, CLINCH MOUNTAIN GOSPEL, recorded in Lexington that week.

  • @SusanoftheLanes Joining Crowe was the best move he made. When he recorded "My Home ant in the Hall of Fame" with J.D Crowe that landed him a Country Record Contract.

  • @Banjerman07 I have ever album Keith ever made with Ralph...but his heart was in Country..He loved Lefty and Merle...when they did that album with Steel and drums..J.D. said you could see a BIG SMILE on Keith's face that had never been there before...

  • never be a nother one like keith whitley

  • Just great music, what else can you say, It can never be replaced

  • Awesome....

  • How can you not love this music and the harmonies??? I was raised on it, along with country and rock, but this is barebones singin & playin. Nothing better in this world!!!

  • EPIC ENDING

  • @AddictiveHerring Absolutely epic.

  • GREAT MUSIC

  • i love bluegrass and this song i miss it and im only 14 lol

  • This song will be played at my funeral....as my eulogy......

  • This is so beautiful, such awesome harmony, gives me the chills

  • let me tell ya what their just aint music like this any more keith is my hero i grew up listening to bluegrass keith and conway and when my grandfather had comer bluegrass festivals when i was little in md it just didnt get any better than that keith you r missed

  • best version ever. and i cn't find it on itunes or amazon :(

  • i. love. this. song.

  • Sheesh.. I'm 21 years old and would love to start a bluegrass band. But no one my age understands the beauty of this kind of harmony. Its kind of upsetting. R.I.P Keith

  • @kjwhite88 There are kids your age and they want to do it too! Go to some bluegrass festivals and you might just find yourself friends of a lifetime and band mates too! Good luck and keep on keepin on!!

  • Who is that on lead Guitar?

  • @16BrookeAnne Renfro Profit

  • @16BrookeAnne that would be Renfro Proffit

  • @236: Fiddler checking his watch? Man, if i'd been present at this performance, I'd never want it to end... but maybe he's making sure they're fitting their time slot or something.

  • from the song:

"Perhaps you'll plant some flowers On my cold unworthy grave Come and sit along beside me"

we are here Keith. Rest in Peace.

  • It's hard to believe that today their isn't hardly any great bluegrass like that today.I love this song.

  • Sing that bluegrass!!

  • It's in the mountains

  • This is for the love of my life Kevin he knows why sorry couldnt find ralph singing it I LOVE U

  • I'm 26 years old and love this old music. This is real music no matter what anyone says. Ralph Stanleys voice is one of kind and the emotion and heart Keith Whitley puts in his singing is phenomenal. I grew up listening to Kieth Whitleys country on the radio and his voice was definelty heaven sent. Everytime I listen to this song it brings a tear to my eye because it just comes from way down deep. Thanks for sharing this with all of us.

  • Thank You for posting ...notice the serious delivery, must have been an emotional experience for those who were fortunate enough to see the delivery live.

  • Kinda ironic now isn't it? Yes, Keith Whitley...we do miss you. Thanks for the music. This is so touching. Thanks for posting.

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs and performances ralph and keith did together. it is one of my favorites anyway.

everyone on that stage made this a beautiful perfect masterpiece! from the baritone harmony to the guitar playing. it all came out just perfectly beautiful!!!!!!

    thanks so much for sharing.....susie

  • beautiful

  • No matter who is smoothing out the lead, one thing that folks always overlook about these classic Stanley trios is the fact that Jack Cooke was a baritone singing monster! He blended so good that most of the time his voice was transparent....just like a good baritone ought to be. I miss ole' Jack.

  • Playing lead guitar Is Mr. Renfro Proffit, a good friend of mine, not Ricky, not Roy, not Junior. Renfro Proffit..!!!

  • That will bring a tear to a glass eye.

  • Still the best version of that song I've ever heard. Pure mountain singin', It just don't get no better.

  • man anything ralph stanley r keith whitley does is classic ima rap/r&b artist and i love there music it gives me cold chills everytime i hear ralph stanley sing and keith whitley just has a voice from heaven

  • That...was...beautiful.

  • you are missed

  • magic pure magic

  • i love curley raycline checking his watch during ricky lee's second guitar break. Must get boring standing on stage when yuu have nothing to do lol

  • Now this is true old time, mountain style Bluegrass.... The ending harmony is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!! I give it 100 stars just for the ending!

  • just swell ,bluegrass dont come like this anymore.thanks for sharin

  • what albums of Ralph Stanley feature Keith...i want to hear the song "mountain dew" with keith whitley but cant find it anywhere!! please help??

  • thank you for uploading this !!! this is great - upload more please, "catch a train and ride" with Keith singing, i haven't heard in years or some with Roy Lee centers would be great too !!!

  • this is great!!!

  • Hard to believe now that Ralph had to be dragged kicking and screaming to feature lead guitar....just finished his autobiography "Man of Constant Sorrow"...bet he's really glad the record producers talked him into it!

  • I had no idea he had written anything-great news! I'll be keeping eyes open to when it's available to be sure-THANKS for letting us know!

  • Vintage Music I appreciate this and thanks for posting

  • what happend to this kind of old time bluegrass?

  • @luna0543 its still alive here deep in the hills of eastern ky

  • renfro profit the best lead guitar lives in east ky a friend he has only got better with every year that has passed

  • @m99h2000 Ralph seems to "CLONE" his guitar players...George Shuffler, Ricky Lee, Renfro Profitt, Junior Blankenship, James Allen Shelton, all are great players....Ricky and Renfro were the two who played George Shuffler's licks just like the record..IMO

  • Alright! We're back on track. I sure missed them doing that song. Thanks for re-posting it. That ending gives me chill bumps all the down to my toes. That's the "real" mountain singing. No frills, fancy costumes, Vegas hype, or exploding stages, just raw soulful mountain singing. It's the greatest. May it live forever.

  • What happened to all the Whitley/Stanley videos. Please bring them back.

  • This is just fantastic!! 5+

  • this is renfro profitt , on the lead guitar, and bass vocals. my barber knows him he lives about 18 miles from my house.

  • And on the LP cut of this song where Roy Lee sang lead, Keith played lead guitar and sang bass.

  • The guy playing the lead guitar is Renfro Profit who was replaced by Junior Blankenship in the 1980's. Sammy Adkins replaced Keith Whitley.

  • Keith was replaced by Charlie Sizemore. Charlie was replaced by Sammy.

  • this is not jr blankenship or roy lee he died before this album was released shot to death by his friend this is ricky lee

  • What a great version of a great song.

  • Carters bass part I do believe is being sung by Junior Blankenship?

  • its not ricky lee?

  • I have this on a LP recording where Roy Lee Centers is probably the singer of the bass part; Junior Blankenship is not present on the LP recording. Junior Blankenship might be the one in this video. I don't know either of them by sight.

  • I rule out Ricky Skaggs, this guy doesn't look like him. Pictures of Junior Blankenship I found on Google seem to rule him out too. I didn't find any good pictures of Roy Lee Centers, but right now I'm thinking he is probably the guy singing the A.P. Carter bass part. (and playing the cross-picking solo) . I once asked this bass player (Jack Cooke) at a Stanley campground appearance in Michigan who played the guitar part on the LP recording and he said it was Whitley.

  • don't get any better than that!! goose bumps on goose bumps for sure!!

  • whose playin lead and doing carters bass part is it ralph or carters son maybe? anybody know?thx

  • good vidio thank you....

  • I miss ya Keith Whitley.

I miss the Ole Kentucky Fox Hunter also. Curly Ray Cline. Greatest Fiddler Ever !!

  • Thank you for posting these videos, and this one especially.

  • Great video, Thanks for posting. CHILL BUMPS.........MAJOR CHILL BUMPS !!!!!! Way to go Keith Whitley, miss ya bub !!!!!

  • Remarkable performance!

  • Wow! And funny thing is just when you think the song can't get any better, they throw in an ending like I've never heard before.

  • Oh Yes!!! We do miss Keith!

Thank you for the video. It is wonderful.

  • update on that guitar he sold it . ha ha

  • yes renfro profit did i live in prestonsburg he lives in pikeville kentucky. thats why my barber knows him. i play the same guitar in the barber shop that he does when he comes for a haircut.. he played for ralph for 2 years i thiink 76 and 77

  • That is probably right because dad played with him in 73 and 74 then went back to Larry Sparks and Keith came back to Ralph.

  • just so every one knows the fiddle player is curly ray cline . ralph on banjo keith whitely sings and guitar and lead guitar is renfro profitt

  • Did Renfro Profitt play with ralph for a while.

  • who is the other guitar player

  • my barber is good friends with the lead guitar player. i tried to meet him but i keep missing him ha ha!
