  • the coolest thing about this is the guitar tones. Great. Really interesting and novel. All respect.

  • why is lofticries always in the recomended videos, for like every song!! >>>>

  • that eye make up <3

  • FUCK!! St. Vincent is the SHIT!!!.... Too much talent.. EPIC!!! X

  • OH MY GOD

  • This is a true musical artist!

And also while watching i made a funny.

She looks like jack whites long lost sister haha

  • @JohnWasHereYea Except she's actually really good at playing the guitar.

  • She's so beautiful that I don't know what to do

  • beautiful...

  • Great guitar player!

  • I wonder how many views this video would really have if it included THE AMOUNT

OF TIMES I'VE COME BACK!!! O_O

  • unique and good are not synonymous...

  • AWESOME!

  • Just enjoy the session. And stop comparing. If you don't like her style just move on. It is as easy as that..

  • You cats hating on my original comment need to cool out. I never meant to "compare" the two. Why were you so quick to judge that i was comparing? That's unfathomable! C'mon people, do really think Lana and Annie are even on the same level, hell even in the same league to be compared? It was a spur-of-the-moment comment. I was tired of seeing Lana in the media and thought St. Vincent should be in the spotlight considering how exquisite her latest record is. Now, let's all enjoy this session!

  • @TheAndreBurks Yeah seriously brahh. Lana is like too mainstream.

  • Why even compare the two?,,,, Annie is a fucking musician ..... Lizzie(Lana) sings

  • @philipsmog i say she makes the 'ugliest' guitar noise sound pretty - FUCKING - AMAZING! 09:06

  • @sanedreams ok

  • @philipsmog hmm.. have i swayed you onto her now? - just kidding around mate ;) strange mercy is such a soothing track.

  • Just bought a guitar like this on eBay. They were originally sold by Sears and Montgomery Wards for kids swept up by the British invasion. Can't understand why it took decades for a hardware store guitar to work its way into the progressive/alt universe. Or. Yeah. I can see how it might take that long. For the record I have never seen a woman like Annie in Sears.

  • Lana DEL Rey and Annie Clark are certainly not the same...

St Vincent is an extraordinary guitar player, she's absolutely amazing in gigs, and her songs are truly well written. LDR is a pure marketing product without soul.. Uncomparable ..

  • @royalecocotte Exactly

  • @royalecocotte nope Lana Del Ray is young and talented. St Vincent will never be as big her moment in the spotlight has passed.

  • @killingspree yeah and for those who still havent noticed annie clark yet

are just missing out big time...

  • i know this always gets mentioned but... 09:06 ... ^_^

  • I'm in love with this music.........

  • WoW

  • so amazing. I've had a crush on Annie ever since the first time I saw her play live like 10 yrs ago. what a thoroughly amazing individual. Her music is a great reflection of her being.

  • Oh, she has two harmony bobcats. INTERESTING.

  • love

  • Comment removed

  • near my 25th time watching this... each one discover some away from here........

  • i can't think of an honest to god popular opinion that st vincent is worse than lana del rey. i don't know why everyone on the internet likes to preach to the choir, i also think it's really dumb to compare lana and annie based on gender.

  • 14:25

    magic

  • 9:06 is literally the best thing ever.

  • no me lo creo!

  • hey I couldn't read the argument that was going on, I was too busy watching the actual video instead of paying attention to comments

  • I saw her back in october, front row center. It was unreal; it felt like a dream or something. And she's even more gorgeous in person. She's super sweet, too :)

  • 07:31 ...strange mercy... :)

  • I love this, and I've watched the full 15 minutes dozens of times now, but it's almost too good. Like it's nauseating. It makes me fucking sick, it's so good.

  • this is the slickest performance ever! watching st. vincent perform is just as incredible as listening to her! why aren't more people seeing this?!?!?!?!

  • I almost feel sorry for those people who haven't heard of this rockin' beauty yet.

  • I almost died at 7:12

  • Why the shit are people talking about Del Rey?

  • 0:00 chloe in the afternoon......3:03 surgeon......7:31 strange mercy......11:53 year of the tiger

  • If you really love someone's music, you won't compare them to anyone else.

  • What brand and model of guitar is the one she uses during the first song? It looks and sounds beautiful.

  • She kinda sounds like Bjork at the beginning of Chloe in the Afternoon

  • Her interesting melodies are strangely entrancing.

  • St.Vincent > Jesus

  • St. Vincent > TheAndreBurks

  • @modeldaughters she most certainly is.

  • This is all of the beauty in life. This. and not much else.

  • I think I am pregnant now. I hope so.

  • What I love bout this band: they completely defy the status quo of musical theory using original phrasing patterns and strange melodies

  • Ugh why are you so beautiful

  • Didn't realize that a lack of bass could still sound flabbergasting.

  • laurie anderson, bjork, japan, and the knife in one (beautiful) body alone

  • @soogoonu plus a considerable helping of Polly Jean.

  • @cantcny as for scenic presence yes even in a different way - but I feel the music backgrounds differs quite a bit

  • when i saw her in concert last october, she was kind enough to sign my album as follows, "dear tom, i'll be with you lost boy." xo - annie.

if my house ever caught fire, that album would be the first thing i would grab.

  • blown away... been waiting a long time to hear a guitar played like that

  • She's gorgeous, the same as her music..

  • PJ Harvey?

  • Annie might have just extended the life of the guitar solo by a few decades.

  • she plays a jaguar i think

  • @aheard4 A Jaguar? Do you know the first thing about guitars? I have never seen her anywhere near a Fender guitar. Got some links to pics? No. Didn't think so.

  • harmony bobkat.woops i got my cats mixed up.and @PhysicsForTheFuture you can calm the fuck down.it's a guitar and yes they're awesome but not that big of a deal when you mix up a name. i wasn't being an asshole when i typed my comment.you could just correct me kindly like a civilized person.and don't belittle my knowledge when you have no information of who i actually am. the only idiot is you for getting so angry over a mere accusation.

  • @PhysicsForTheFuture Chill out dude: tinyurl / 7mjkh8f

  • @aheard4 She plays Harmonys (Silouettes, I think, known as Hornet by Danelectro) almost exclusively, the shape of which does resemble a Jag

  • St. Vincent > Lana Del Rey

  • @TheAndreBurks no shit

  • @TheAndreBurks duh...

  • @JustCallMeFancy2 you'd be surprised how many people (hipsters) like that garbage that Lana produces. My comment was a friendly reminder, duh...

  • @TheAndreBurks I'm kind of depressed this even needs to be stated.

  • @TheAndreBurks dear god , did someone compare the two, if so they should proceed to not pass go and hang themselves

  • @TheAndreBurks HOW DARE YOU

  • @TheAndreBurks lol what's really sad is how not obvious that is to a lot of people, even though Annie Clark is miles ahead of Lana Del Rey as a musician.

  • @bobby666x Lizzie isn't a musician

  • @bobby666x Lizzie isn't a musician

  • @TheAndreBurks

Cool fucking comment, bro. Was there ever really a debate over St. Vincent and Lana Del Rey? Stop thumbs whoring for fuck's sake.

  • @asianmatt2012 Well the 35 people that liked the comment are just as guilty for the popularity of those kind of comments so it's not entirely his fault.

  • @TheAndreBurks

    Don't really hear the resemblance

  • What kind of guitar is she playing in Surgeon?

  • @ThePersonWhosCool Almost looks like a Taylor Arch-top, but she does have an afinity for odd-ball guitars so that may be too mainstream for her tastes...not sure though. It sure LOOKS like a Taylor no sound soles on the body though...

  • @ThePersonWhosCool I think it's a Hagstrom of some kind.

  • When I was young, coach called me the tiger.

  • I mean Annie Clark is my favorite everything, but I particularly appreciate the video editing here!

  • I'm still trying to figure out in some sections wether she's using a midi-controler box from her guitar, "The Key players" are doing it or a combination of the two. The key's/synth players sure seem to be playing alot of stuff over top of her, but she's so crazy(read: GENIUS) with her guitar tones that it's hard to tell. There are some REAL distinct guitar solo's but some fo the ambient stuff is just confusing even though you can look right AT her playing it (ir whatever is actually going on)

  • Really interesting and strange. It sounds like her voice only comes from her throat not her heart, though does seem really appropriate to the whole aesthetic of St.Vincent, or maybe just this performance, i haven't seen that much yet. Everything's so under control even when it's looks as if it might not be. Chilling!

  • GREAT!!!!!

  • No one juxtaposes such elegance and unhinged raggedness the way only she does.

  • il 23 febbraio a bologna!!

  • St Vincent. Annie Clark. You are GENIUS. Beautiful, refreshing. musical genius.

  • music isnt subjective, music is subjective and objective like everything else within the reality of humans... ((it's an objective way of thinking to think music is subjective))

  • Annie is my dream... the dream of my life.

  • She's perfect.

I love how she's taken aback by some of the lyrics and guitar riffs

  • I have the strangest erection right now...

  • @tabbaka I have the most perfectly reasonable erection right now.

  • the world needs more artists to take chances like she does so effortlessly. Some of it does it for me and some doesn't but like sonic youth, when things go right it is absolute bliss.IMO complacency is the worst thing for music.

  • damn this is sweet, what awesome unique guitar playin'. fuck she's solid.

  • For those of you who want to skip to certain songs:

    3:01

    7:30

    11:53

  • that is prolly one of the best videos I have ever seen.

  • 90 people with their brooms saying "turn down that aweful racket!!"

  • im gonna marry you or clone you...

  • she is so talented and incredibly beautiful

  • I want to put my face on her face.

  • she is so badass

  • Omg she's just the best! I love her so much

  • I don't particularly like her in this song. She has a great voice, though.

  • This shit is genius. You don't find this stuff on the radio where all the monkeys play their music.

  • @matreyia Why do you think it's 'genius'? It's just different.

  • @aweingalliterations it's just my opinion. this band doesn't rely on common structure and manages to hold my interest with other tools such as sound design and unconventional rhythm and contrast along with the vocal delivery. Let radio pop band try what these guys are doing here and they will fail.

  • Why waste our time arguing? Music, like all things people love, is subjective. Why do we need to defend our reason for loving something, we just do. And I love Annie Clark's music, I just do. I don't need to write a book for why I do. I just do.

  • Annie Clark is a musical genius and a fucking goddess. :)

I neeeed to meet her someday.

  • @mhminsane She's touring right now :) I'm going to see her in february myself.

And everybody: sorry I argued along, I couldn't stop myself! Back to purely enjoying this piece of art.

  • Stop arguing and enjoy the music!

  • @EGarrett01 they are not songs about pleasure. talent should not be based on writing with a pop mentality

  • @spoorgen I absolutely agree with you.

And the way I see it, saying St. Vincent has no talent is the same as saying i.e. Katy Perry does (no offence, but it's just purely commercial without any thought behind it, like a significant part of the musicians on top of the charts). I think he sees it that way, so we'll never agree with him anytime soon and although I might've defensively reacted in a childish manner, as well, I see no use in continuing this any longer. It's plain stupid.

  • Not gonna comment on her songs cuz it's not exactly my type. But I'd say those sessions look good and offer a good sound quality too, which are imo much better than those music videos which are produced for purpose. 4AD should have done it with Cocteau Twins. That might've popularized them in Europe and Asia, where the alternative music is largely respected.

  • It's lyrical hangover. If I drink, this might sound normal...maybe good

  • @EGarrett01 And then we are back at that beautiful recognizable guitar line. So this isn't music that you can show your 14 year old mtv nazi sister, but it is music that you can sit down, and listen to, and feel. And don't go telling me that i don't know what music I like and really don't like. Because I take the time to listen to and appreciate my music, as music should be treated to

  • @EGarrett01 your left with that hauntingly familiar repeated guitar melody. Then back to the same build up, with a different melody on top, and in a different, but recognizable fashion. It leaves you needing something more, and she gives it to you. The drums lead into the catharsis of "if i ever see that..." That part is magnificent, full of emotion, for her and her listeners, the soaring vocals and togetherness of the whole band are a stark contrast to the syncopated and fractured other parts.

  • @EGarrett01 Oh no no no no no. Do not get me started on how good I think her music "actually" is. But you know what, here I go. Let's take the song "Strange Mercy" for example, as it is one of my favorites on the album. It opens with that syncopated drum beat, which is immediately resolved by an intricate chord progression, and a beautiful vocal melody that Annie somehow wrote over that fractured drum beat. It then at "i'll be with you lost boys" begins a build up that is quickly torn down and

  • @spoorgen

The songs HAVE a melody and a drum beat, and chords, but the unity of them is a massive fail. She seems to lack any natural talent for recognizing how sounds go together to make pleasurable music. She's imitating the general structure of it, but in detail it's all messed up and doesn't work. Pretty girl, good personality but extremely untalented.

  • @EGarrett01 i think, perhaps, you've struck upon what (reasonable) people call 'subjectivity'. don't mistake your own opinion for a universal one. i love this music, i find it pleasurable and beautiful. if you don't that's fine. appreciate diversity.

  • @youchoosealex

The Wisdom of Crowds is a known, scientifically-studied and verified phenomenon that is INCREDIBLY accurate for subjective judgements, when properly applied. There are bestselling books about it. It's not opinion nor a naked appeal to popularity. She's had more than enough exposure for it to judge her work accurately. It has been judged to be utterly insignificant. She needs to try harder or let someone else write for her because she has no natural musical talent.

  • why the fuck does this have so many dislikes?

  • @cordell2311 all that people can go fuck themselves

  • @cordell2311 because the world's not going to agree with every opinion you have

  • @cordell2311 Because "most people wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them in the ass." (-Frank Zappa)

  • Like n° 1000 :D

  • Even though this isn't her best live performance (it's the first time performing these songs live, so that's pretty logical), I really love it! Lucky for me she's coming to Amsterdam :) Wonder what certain people think is bad about her lyrics and composition, but what the heck, why should I keep reading stuff that I'm certain is without the needed knowledge and just annoys me? Not knowing an artist and already saying she's terrible and untalented. I know what she's capable of and I love it!

  • @Atletified this is an AMAZING performance. she sang and played like a champ. love her tones.

  • this is shit, why do people like it!?

  • i don't get how she plays guitar. and i play guitar.

  • PJ, Dif, Bjork, Portis, Durutti, Zappa - or am I just old. Still good though! Clever!

  • Most excellent music Annie!!!

  • @EGarrett01 Well no, i don't own an iPod, but she is listened to regularly from my phone. So I answer you again with a "yes." However you, Mr. Garrett, have not yet answered my inquiry, so I will ask it again. Why do you ask your question?

  • @spoorgen

I'm asking the question because I think deep down you know her music isn't any good.

  • @EGarrett01 What's wrong with liking her music? Is it inherently immoral to do so?

  • @Death2Heath

I'm just saying it isn't any good and she has no talent. You can still like it.

  • @EGarrett01 Just out of curiosity, who do you think has more talent than her? I'm just wondering, that's all.

  • @EGarrett01 First of all shes not unknown... Maybe you've noticed that she´s appeared on Letterman earlier this year and most of her videos are close to one million views now, not that it matters. Secondly, I love her music ,its very enigmatic and strange while still remaining poppy and sweet and i think this is one of the reasons why shes not ridiculously famous, the majority of the population don't care for prolific music which is sad, but not as sad as you.

  • get back in the kitchen

  • Stunning! Shes my favorite female artist right now!

  • Wow! The first song is beautiful!

  • Vote Ron Paul

  • What kind of guitar is she playing during the first song?

  • @BOOMDIGIDYable its a harmony guitar. its a very old model. that and a good fuzz is how she gets that nice, nasty sound.

  • oh no... St Vincent is becoming more mainstream... now I must find something to do with my life

  • Comment removed

  • I find her strangely compelling and her guitar work extraordinary.

  • nice techno

  • Yiu suck

  • It's interesting how polarized the opinions are of St Vincent. I think it's just a reflection of how we are these days. Maybe it's the fear and misunderstanding of something different. Maybe it's a reaction possessed by those who either hate or love this type of expression. Either way it always comes down to whether you like the music or not. That simple really...

  • this is shit.

  • I don't give a fuck about what any of you others have to say about the video or the band. I just love Annie's voice and her enlightening way of playing the strings of life and death. Just keep at what you guys are doing St. Vincent. You guys are awesome.

  • Hell yes. Original sounds for the win.

  • She puts a lot of guitarists to shame

  • @EGarrett01 i'd say i listen to her a good bit. why do you ask?

  • @spoorgen

So she is on your Ipod and listened to regularly?

  • Wow, I am soo loving her right now!!!
