fact though snooker players can play pool. you will NEVER see a pool player even come close to a snooker player on a snooker table where as snooker players can/have beat pool players at pool.
First of all, as as I remember, one needs to qualified, no? In order to do that, he'd have to leave his beloved sport behind. Efren could be a World Class 3-cushion player, too. Perhaps played chess and poker on a similar level (he's really a multi-talent). But then, he's a national (now worldwide!) hero, isn't that more than most of us can ask for in life? Nick Varner could have been a pro golfer instead of pool player. There's more money in golf (as is in Snooker), but hey, decisions...
It is, I agree. I was amazed myself when I first heard it. It really only proves something people tend to underestimate: it is true true one can become acceptably good at pool with non-perfect eye-hand coordination - but to assume that those champions who blunder only once every Michaelmas Day despite taking on ANY SHOT THEY FANCY have inferior technique is ridiculous! They manage to CONSISTENTLY WIN in a sport everyone can get fairy good at!! Why should they feel hampered in other cue sport?
FWIW, World 3-Cushion Champion Torbörn Blomdahl once won a match of 9-Ball against Efren Reyes in a challenge match - tempting to say, what's the likelihood of that happening? But it's on YT! I still own old VHS tapes of a challenge match in St. Moritz many years ago between Steve Mizerak and Steve Davis (both in their prime), in which Davis managed to win games of Straight Pool and Mizerak games of Snooker (Mizerak won the overall contest). Fact is, they're all gifted cueists, so no wonder!
haha. where'd you hear that Varner could have been a pro golfer. Varner is at best a solid 7 handicap... never was much better than that. Totally untrue, sorry.
Not entirely sure who said this, but I seem to remember it was either George Fels, Hal Mix or Nick himself (and apart from having heard this first hand, I believe it also comes up in one of George's columns - but it would take me too long to find the one). Also, you'll have to forgive me for not knowing much about golf handicaps, but wasn't he better than that in college?
@bogdychamp Well, it's Peter Ebdon's story as told to IPT participants I know, as well as according to some who were present watching, apparently Efren beat them both in short races, if memory serves right, to 5 (best of 9) gambling. No reason not to believe it, but I'll admit I wasn't there to have witnessed it personally. Unfortunately, the IPT petered out right when everyone around here was getting ready to make a move… :-(
@bogdychamp What's really important, however, is the likelihood of championship calibre players from one billiards variety or discipline to beat ones from another. Fact is, there are countless such examples, Efren beating Blomdahl at 3-Cushion, Blomdahl beating Efren at 9-Ball, Mizerak beating Davis and White in challenge matches combining Snooker and pool, ironically despite Davis beating Mizerak, of all games, in a game of Straight Pool, etc. & etc. (e.g. Stalev and so many more examples)…
that's just hit the nail on the head there my friend
spot on. Yes there is alot of skill in both games but snooker players firstly have to play with a much bigger table hellishly smaller pockets and a load more balls.
lol actually there is more control in pool because you haven't got six acres of space in which to position the cue ball. and a huge percentage of shots require touchy, skilful cueing with inside spin for example. as opposed to snooker just being all predominantly centre ball.
Controlling precisely over a larger table is more difficult
Potting a snookerball on a snookertable is ten times harder than sinking a poolball on a pooltable.
We can conclude clearing a snookertable is harder, but that doesn't make the game harder. What makes a game hard is the quality of play of your opponent, and since they all clear tables that easily (it simply IS easier) it makes it hard to compete in professional pool.
-K a snooker tip is designed to b smaller than a pool tip to adjust for the smaller cue ball in snooker. scratch that off your few points list.
-moving a cue ball through traffic on a smaller pool table with balls in the way is more difficult then the wide open space of a snooker table! scratch that off your few points list.
-And potting a pool ball on a pool table also requires an accurate shot.
I conclude your tryin to make snooker look harder than it is! You did a bad job!
@SexBirdCake I am saving this. I can never get my thoughts into a 500 character response about this issue. You did it so nicely. Explains everything I think about both games.
@SexBirdCake no problem. I honestly don't understand how so much hate is generated on youtube from snooker vs pool. When I talk w/snooker and pool players, they're all friendly and respect both games. I don't understand. It's too easy to flame and troll on the internet. It gets really out of hand sometimes.
what the hell are you blabbering on about worriedbeef? most talented man to ever pick up a cue?! o'sullivan can clear a snooker table left handed,....i play both pool and snooker, i can clear up in 9ball or 8 ball, in snooker im lucky to get a break above 20. usa seems to have a knack of simplifying games theyre no good at, or inventing new ones so that theyre the best.
it's pretty standard for a pool player to be able to break and run a rack of 8 ball or 9 ball. but if you look at the great pool players, they don't just clear one rack... they can break and run 3-5 racks pretty consistently. Earl once broke and ran 10 racks in a roll in a tournament which is pretty much unheard of.
my point is running a rack in pool does not equal running a rack in snooker... before you judge how easy pool is, i hope you are a player who can run racks after racks without missing a ball.
God bless you Mr.Charzy888, I agree with you 100%, America play sissy sports. In England we play rugby no body protection, yanks play american football covered with padded gear, american football players couldnt fight there way out of a paper bag, yet they say they greatest nation on earth. They are the greatest nation for starting wars and killing soldiers during friendly fire.
all you people saying pool is so easy compared to snooker are way off the mark. snooker is a great game but don't disrespect pool either. you put white, o'sullivan, hendry etc against top pool players like buddy hall, earl strickland, efren reyes, they wouldnt stand a chance in hell in a long race. the games are a lot more different than people realise because people are ignorant to the game.
and earl strickland may well be the most talented man to ever pick up a cue. lets not instantly disrespect the man just because he's not a snooker player. and wtf did you say pexbo lol, and ugly cue action???? jesus christ.
why do the yanks always play such wank sports, pool/massive pockets.racing cars in circles.nfl has 40 odd players on a team with a single talent each so you watch substitutions all day long, literally as the clock stops every 6 seconds. your supposed to be the greatest nation so why not play challenging sports instead of these gay pastimes.and baseball, wtf is that all about, big boy rounders!
LOL - I have played nine ball. And I have cleared a rack from the break. There are probably hundreds of thousands of pool players who have. I'm just saying, If I was extremely lucky, and got the same luck for that 1 frame for another 6.... i'm saying i'd win. The chances are very slim, but not impossible. But a thousand * moe likely than me ever winning a frame in snooker against a professional...
pool is nothing compared to snooker - what is potting 9 balls on a tiny 6 ft table, when compared to like 3 times as many balls on a huge 12 feet table with much smaller pockets, Pool is fun, but is a little boys game
No, Dillon is NOT right. 9-ball pool and snooker are two different games; you can't really compare them. If it was as simple as snooker being more difficult, we'd have seen a snooker-playing pool world champ by now. I used to be a snooker fan but all the personalities have gone from the English game now... 9 ball pool is better entertainment (for me anyway)
The only reason there is no snooker-pool champ every year is because pool is such an easy game, the top 1000 players can clear up a rack easy - so whoever has the luck will win. Dillon said that pool is NOTHING in relation to snooker regarding the difficuly of the sport... and he is NOT wrong, clearly.
9 Ball might be better entertainment - and you probably prefer WWE wrestling to boxing. There's a clear difference.
have you played 9-ball? why do you care? is there anything more important in your life? Some people actually like to play the game. It's strange that you enjoy offending others
