What you here described is a travel. Ball has to hit the floor before you take a step.

You're allowed one step before a mandatory dribble, and sometimes gracious refs give you two steps if you're running too fast for them to count. If you look at any break away dunk or layup, they always take one or two steps without dribbling before the jump

If you're making a move to the basket directly taking 2 steps is perfectly legal in hoops. Now 3 steps will get you whistled at, but not 2 in that situation.
