I'm an American and studied abroad in the UK. I wouldn't say one group is more friendly than the other. Brits are wonderfully polite and welcoming.

It's just that Americans just seem more open. Like, an American is more likely to meet the eye of a stranger on the subway and say "How ya doing?"

I hate to use a cliche, but Brits are more reserved. But, just because they don't go jumping all over you to say hi, doesn't mean they're not fantastic people. It's just a culture difference.
