Firefighters are more physically trained and fit than police officers, but they get a gun and the firefighters get an axe! Also the Police get criticized more and firefighters are loved for their work. It is more likely you will die as a firefighter though.
@007Influence Wrong. The national standards set for departments for hiring cops vs firefighters are much higher. Also the probability of a cop dying in the line of duty vs a firefighter is 3/1. And the firefighters who do die in the line of duty usually do so from heart problems. Something they could fix by being in shape.

I don't know why police officers and firefighters are always being compared as if they're somehow in competition with each other. They're completely different jobs! It's probably true to say that there's more variety in the police force with regards to areas to work in, opportunities for progression, etc. and I think they generally get paid a bit more too, but firefighters are just as important and necessary for the safety of society. I once saw a man hanging from a sign he crawled out on during a car park garage robbery.
Instead of letting the tower ladder go in and safely take the man down in 5 minutes, the NYPD had an officer rappel down from the roof on a rope in a 2 hour unsafe op so the FDNY wouldn't get the glory.

Firefighters are important public servants that I know for sure all LEOs respect.
You know who really does more though? Consolidated Police/Fire departments like the San Diego Harbor Police, which does both Law Enforcement AND Marine firefighting.

actuality from what i have been told the police academy is harder. And in a way their job is harder too because when they check people they ask if they have anything and if they say no they will check you anyway and probably get cut and get some random disease, even aids. Most cops are too lazy to be firefighters. Look at an accident scene, firefighters clearing wreckage, directing traffic, cutting people out, assisting the Ambulance staff with the patients, hosing down the road, moving the vehicles so the road can open.
