one of the best sounding live concert recordings made. The performances are superlative - most better than the studio versions (although Halford overdubbed the vocals but who cares they're awesome). The live recording engineer (Y. Suzuki) was fantastic - even with the equipment they had to work with back in '79 this is pure metal genius!
I like the live version much better than the studio version, no disrespect to the studio version, it's just that the live version seems to have more life and feeling to it
I saw Judas Priest live for the first time back in 1979 at the Long Beach arena in support of this album. I couldn't believe what my ears and my eyes were experiencing as the band totally fucking blew me away. I had been to concerts of Black Sabbath, Kiss, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and a few others but I had never experienced nothing as brutal as Judas Priest. Take me back to 1979 so I can experience that concert once again.
Beginning to end. I'll put up this album, tape, disc, whatever that hell you wanna call it against anything out there. If there's a metal album that's a 10, this is it!! Tyrant. What a suitable way to end it.
Entirely? I love Priest but you're giving them too much credit. In addition to Priest, many bands of the 80's (especially from 1983 onwards) were also influenced by Motorhead, Scorpions and RJD era Sabbath. Not to mention the playing style of Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen (even if VH weren't full on metal) had a huge impact on many 80's metal guitarists. I would know, I was there.
@ABurialatOrnans1 don't get me wrong pal, i'm definitely not a judas priest fanboy. I was talking about that typical 80's heavy metal sound, which Priest pretty much defined while they were in the 70's. Yes, UFO did stuff like Rock Bottom, Scorpions did stuff like Virgin Killer, so on. But Priest were way ahead of their time while Sabbath were in that Never Say Die period. As for 1983 onwards, thrash metal came (alog with the motorhead and hardcore punk influences), as you know.
Sabbath broke out of their creative rut on Heaven and Hell and influenced many so bringing up Never Say Die would be irrelevant. They were still very important in the early 80's. Thrash wasn't the only thing that came along 1983 and onwards, there were still plenty more of traditional metal bands in those days. Savatage, for example, put out Sirens that year and it was still heavier than a lot of the thrash bands.
@cherryorchards It depends of what you consider "80s metal". There are people who think 80s metal is glam metal. As everybody knows, this style was completely influenced by bands like Kiss or Alice Cooper. But, as its not clear if glam metal was really metal, you can say that 80s metal is thrash and early power metal. Then, you could say that Priest was a very important influence, and in a lot of groups this band was more important than Sabbath; but Sabbath had a very important role too.
Depends on what you mean by glam. I do know this though, W.A.S.P. are not in the same category as Cinderella, Twisted Sister are not in the same genre as Poison. The formers are pure heavy metal.
@ABurialatOrnans1 But, in general, only a few glam metal bands were inluenced by metal groups, the majority were influenced by hard rock and glam. Well, Cinderella, Twisted Sister and Poison have a hard rock sound, early WASP too.
@FastasaShark1308 who are those people who thinks 80`s metal is glam metal? i was thinking more of bands like, say, Accept. Nonetheless, i know Sabbath was very influential, but for heavy music in general, from new wave of british hm to bands like system of a down. Especially "modern" metal (pantera, machine head, type o negative etc) who focused more on heavyness than speed, wouldn`t you agree? even grunge had lots of sabbath on their stuff
@cherryorchards The people that think 80s metal is glam is the same people that think glam metal is the most similar subgenre to heavy metal: they are posers XD Black Sabbath has influenced everything on metal, but you have reason, styles like grunge or even hardcore punk were influenced by Sabbath sound. Doom and "Gothic" metal (something gothic cant´t be metal, metalheads and gothics are too diferents) are influenced by Sabbath too. I dont know, maybe tou are right.
@FastasaShark1308 I've heard bands like Poison and Warrant do Judas Priest covers, so I think that Priest was an influence on them. A lot of glam records sound like Priest's 80s material, so I don't think that it's a wild assumption that Priest was an influence on many glam metal bands at that time, as they were arguably the most popular metal band in the States before MTV turned their focus to glam.
@nri222 A lot of glam records sounds like a FEW Priest´s songs; specifically: Livin After Midnight and United from British Steel, full Point of entry album (a hard rock album by Priest, it´s like Load for Metallica, but better of course XD), (Take These) Chains and Youve got another thing coming (and they sounded heavier than the majority of glam commercial songs) from Screaming For Vengeance album. Well, I have heard Tigertlaiz doing a cover from Metallica´s Crepping Death too.
@nri222 Certainly, Motorhead has influenced a lot of glam bands, from Twisted Sister to Precious Metal. But their sound is closer to Speed metal (or even Punk) than Glam. With Judas Priest is the same. Glam bands don´t usually make songs like Grinder or Riding on the Wind.
I can play this album all day every day and never get tired of it! It's the best heavy metal live album ever, since Priest and Sabbath rule anyway. Crank this shit up full blast!
Fuck!!! what a killer song, one of my favourite priest songs. The ending scream of ''fall'' is like 15 seconds on the studio version.I dont think anyone can ever pull that off now,not even Halford. This version kicks ass too.
@MrLongisland70 let me correct you: BEST FUCKING LIVE ALBUM EVER EVER AND EVER AND EVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
@Megadeth632 To me "Sad Wings of Destiny" is nearly a flawless album, I am a little torn. I think that I would like how he does this style better if I were hearing it live in person, but otherwise I think on the album this is a mesmerizing song.
This version is unbelievable. And I say that from the point of view of LOVING the studio version. I can't believe how great this song is. All of the songs sound great from Unleashed in the East.
I only listen to early stuff, still have my priceless vinyls and concert stubs. A fan at 13 since 'Sad Wings' release, w/ 'Stained Class' being their best studio LP, imo.
'British Steel' opened the gates to radio-friendly, crowd pleaser tunes, "commercial" JP had arrived. When 'Point of Entry' came out, it was a BIG WTF?! Then MTV played it's evil part w/ heavy rotation of "You got another..."
I thank the metal gods that I got on the JP wagon early. \m/ \b/
@Ironmaiden654 If you have a record exchange near you, look there, or just get the CD's on Ebay - thats how I completed my collection of Priest CD's, through Ebay. Some CD's are really hard to find in actual record stores - making online shopping basically the only option.
DAMN THIS FUCKING SONG SHOULD BE THE DEFINITION OF METAL, OR RIFF, OR GUITAR, OR ORGASM... chill down, it took talent to write such a stuff back in 70's
i love the ealiyer work better, although theres nothing wrong here, but they sounded something unworldly in there earliyer work just listen the other version and ur mind will go into its true and most excellent form.
@silentzombie161 I love their early stuff too. Sin After Sin is one of my all time fave albums. I still have it on vinyl! Some killer songs on that album!
@Rottweiler88 Les was a damn talented drummer! He even co-wrote "Beyond The Realms Of Death". And truthfully, I thought Dave Holland was a damn good drummer, as well. Maybe not as technical, but one HELL of a timekeeper.
You will raise your fist and scream, you will ride into battle and piss on your enemies' graves, you will destroy false metal and you will head-bang until you're blue in the face, because the TYRANT says so!
I can't even properly punch somebody, but with this song on, i'd be ready to fight anybody, even Bruce Lee himself, and would act so over the top and violent that i'd probably win. Ha ha!
It's grown to become a very serious issue that such humans exist that can produce such a loud and infectious music!! METAL GODS!! BADASS LEATHER BRITONS!
IMO the chorus sounds dumb with Halford saying "Tyrant" instead of the band doing backing vocals. And there are no vocal harmonies whatsoever. Sorry but the studio version is much better to me.
@guitarstar717 I Gotta totally agree....When priest aquired scott travis, the band became Even more of an incredible force. No disrespect to dave holland, Its just that scott's an absolute monster....
Tyrant is one of my all time favourite Priest songs. I'm just wandering why Rob sand the Tyrant part in the chorus instead of letting Glen and K.K song it like on the album version. Oh well it still kicked arse.
so aside from a few songs that arent on it anyone know the chronoligcal order the 4 bonus songs on the reissue would fit into the original album if you wanted to play it in order it was performed
I like the studio version, but I wish it was arranged like this version... I mean I know its the same song pretty much the same but I like it faster and Halford sings the "Tyrant Capturer of humanity" part different live obviously because hes the only singer but over this song is better fast like this
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I really like this verision, but the singing gets a little fucked up when Halford tries to sing something that someone else should sing for him haha :>
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The studio version isnt as good mostly on account of lousy sound engineering and a young, up and coming band not having the clout to take as much studio time as they wish.
One question regarding this piece. Who plays the lead guitar on this one. The fact that Tipton co-wrote the song would hint the Downing would play lead, am I wrong. I just want to be sure for the sake of inquiring minds. Thanks.
WTF, you didnt really think that one through did you.....the studio version is an absolute beast as well as this one. It would of been much better to just say which one you liked the most, not instantly dislike the original just because you've heard this one, your like a glory supporter for christ sake.
Well you said yourself that it sucked and now you've suddenly changed ure mind? i'm not going to carry on arguin but i am provin a point. Next time if your goin to say something similar, stop and think before you type.
This Album also had in my opinions Judas Priest drummer, at leased until Scott Travis. I especially really like his drum fills. No one plays like that any more.
No, it isn't while the album was touched up (you know, like every other live album ever), the many of bootlegs of this and other Judas priest concerts will testify that they are more than capable of this performance.
It doesn't freakin matter. Live-studio... it kicks ass AND it was totally innovative. Way before it's time. This album unleashed what is known as Thrash, Speed, Death Metal.
Kicks the studio version's ass.

Tyrant is one of my all time favourite Priest songs. I'm just wandering why Rob sand the Tyrant part in the chorus instead of letting Glen and K.K song it like on the album version. Oh well it still kicked arse.
widdow66 1 year ago
They never really do the back ups well for the early albums live. No biggie, still rocks.
gumborific 1 year ago
so aside from a few songs that arent on it anyone know the chronoligcal order the 4 bonus songs on the reissue would fit into the original album if you wanted to play it in order it was performed

This is in my eyes the most excelllent song of the album, all is A+.
Never seen anyone trying to sing this song, I think it's impossibly difficult, a shear masterpiece in heavy metal history,

I like the studio version, but I wish it was arranged like this version... I mean I know its the same song pretty much the same but I like it faster and Halford sings the "Tyrant Capturer of humanity" part different live obviously because hes the only singer but over this song is better fast like this

I really like this verision, but the singing gets a little fucked up when Halford tries to sing something that someone else should sing for him haha :>

Thanks.

They both play lead guitar on every song.

But after hearing this live version the original really sucks
Slayedjudas666 2 years ago 2
WTF, you didnt really think that one through did you.....the studio version is an absolute beast as well as this one. It would of been much better to just say which one you liked the most, not instantly dislike the original just because you've heard this one, your like a glory supporter for christ sake.
Daywalker939 2 years ago 5
Ehm i was trying to say how much i liked this version over the original, ofcourse the original dosnt suck.

This Album also had in my opinions Judas Priest drummer, at leased until Scott Travis. I especially really like his drum fills. No one plays like that any more.

No, it isn't while the album was touched up (you know, like every other live album ever), the many of bootlegs of this and other Judas priest concerts will testify that they are more than capable of this performance.

haha this is a priest scam...unleashed in the STUDIO!
meraj3546 2 years ago
It doesn't freakin matter. Live-studio... it kicks ass AND it was totally innovative. Way before it's time. This album unleashed what is known as Thrash, Speed, Death Metal.

This is performed Live.
Yes, it sounds VERY good for Live and everything is almost spot on, but you can hear some slip-ups, it's not studio...

Research it on Wikipedia.... The joke with'in musical circles was that it should have been called, "Unleashed In The Studio."

I'll admit, I don't really like the studio version of this song.
But this live version has so much more awesome to it, it makes me wonder why they would ever play it slower.
KingBobert 2 years ago
I totally agree man, this is by far the best track of this song that will ever be, and it rocks so much harder then the studeo takes.....
And it;s a great party song to boot :-)
