I hardly have to say that he is vocally fantastic, But I would like to mention his presence, his way to greet the audience(he doesn´t bow, but not of lack of respect, but rather because he didn´t feel like it was necessary at that point. Have you noticed what he does in the intermezzo? He just walks about as if he were in his own livingroom.
Not even Ingvar Wixell would be so cool to do that. Zancanario is totally relaxed. And it´´s probably why he´s such a great actor.
@Merrillmiller99 Totally agree with you - he is so at ease and loving every minute of it ! There is total confidence in his presence AND in his singing - just amazing!!!!
E meraviglioso ! A wonderful baritono.Great timbre and tone. But this tempo seems much too fast but I could be mistaken. Grazie mille Onegin 55 for sharing this. Superb.
Sounds great! I like the tempo. Usually this aria is sung so slow and heavy and boooring! But this tempo is refreshing, it makes the aria interesting. I wish you will see it Texon! Learn from it!
Grande voce! A riprova di quanto non freghi niente agli orchestrali dello sforzo immane che fanno i cantanti lirici, guardate l'espressione della flautista alla fine del solo, come se dopo il suo intervento non ci fosse più nulla, è pure stonata e calante
R U guys kidding? This guy is 1 of my all time favorite Baritones! Everytime people speak of Baritones, his name never comes up(?) R U guys crazy??? This guy's technique, voice, emotions, presence is unmatched! Sorry, but I'll pick him over Milnes anyday!!!
I always loved this magnificent artist -one of the last great Verdi baritones.
However the best Renato ever was ( a mio giudizio ) his compatriot Ettore Bastianini; the way Bastianini attacked "O dolcézze perdute" , is simply matchless up to this day! Thanks to @Onegin65 for this upload.
I agree with zzobrabre and AliciaDupres. "quando" and "sul mio seno": nonetheless the greatest execution ot this aria that i know. I also agree with iduefoscari and TheValdoro about "Nemico della Patria". I believe that Zancanaro is the greatest baritone in the second half of twenties century and perhaps one of the greates in the whole century. Excuse me for my English Thank you Onegin65 for posting it.
The great Zancanaro is a beautiful "breath out" type ! The music of Verdi carries on but he stays down with his high notes and calm through his singing line. Fantastic !
Had to comment again. Just listened to Tibbett, who is a force of nature, magnificent. But Zancanaro, along with his perfect technique, is so inside the music, the idiom, the language, the emotion -- much more moving. But thank heavens for both of them. And thanks for posting.
Zanacanaro is absolutely terrific, to put it mildly! Remarkable that he combines so many virtues in an artist! Wish there was someone like him singing in this generation!
It's true: it is quando (when) and not quanto (how much) and sul mio (at my) and not sul tuo (at your...chest) but in his case it makes no difference. He could sing the whole aria using tra-lala instead of words and he'd still be magnificent. "Pretty good" is describing ZZOBRABRE's performances. For Zancanaro the word is "magnificent".
This performance was my very first exposure to Giorgio Zancanaro, and it absolutely knocked my socks off. I became a dedicated fan instantly. Certainly there is no one to match him today.
Is it the high notes that determine the Verdi baritone, or the strength and fullness of the middle, plus the evenness from the top to lower registers? Whatever the criteria, I'd say Zancanaro meets them.
I saw Zancanaro as Germont in La Traviata at the Verona Arena in '93. Wonderful! Haven't heard of him for years, so I wish Giorgio all the best, where he is singing now.
Not bad. Zancanaro has the attack of Bastiannini and the vocal timbre of Mario Sereni. Whether he is a lyric baritone or a Verdi baritone depends on his high notes. If you listen to Ruffo, Stracciari and particularly Warren, there is almost a tenorish ring in the A-flats & B-flats which for me are the thrilling benchmarks of the Verdi baritone. But this guy is good and there may be hope for the wasteland of competent baritones today.
Yes -I agree,I saw him as Gerard in Andrea Chenier. He brought the house down with his "nemico della patria" He has a wonderful lyrical baritone voice.
what a bad ass

For good or bad never promoted with such hype as later and current opera stars.

I love Giorgio, but it sounds as if he feels he is singing into a "no resonance" hall, and as such, feels/sounds like he is "pushing" a bit.

quando, not quanto Amelia
sul "mio" seno, not sul "tuo" seno
huge difference in the meaning, and I guess in expression too.
other than that, pretty good
