  • I am a native of Trinidad and Tobago. It was these islands that gave the Steel Band to the World. It was so touching to see these young people beating pan as they should and enjoying it.

  • Really nice to see how the instrument which is native to my country (T&T) is evolving and how other nations have embraced it and have obviously mastered it. WAY TO GO!!

  • I'm a Trini and even though we are the makers of the steelpan, I am happy and proud to see other countries adapting to our musical instrument so well. "Japan, I totally enjoyed your performance here. Great music."

  • hey look sonoe and sayori!

  • happy!

  • Nice work Panonrama. When do you go on tour?

  • These guys could go to Trinidad - inventor of the Steelpan - and seriously kick some butts there.

They're terrific and this comment is from a Trinidadian.

  • BTW: The name of the man credited with inventing the only new musical instrument of the 20th Century - the Steelpan - is Elie Manette.

  • Actually no....the man widely credited is Winston 'Spree' Simon.

    And you call yourself Trini?

  • Wrong! Ellie & Spree and their padnas came up with the steeldrum. Prior to the oil drums, they used biscuit tins.

  • Additionally Ellie Mannette has never laid claim to any credit for inventing 'pan'...you can contact him and find out for yourself, he's on the faculty of West Virginia University. Better to educate yourself than spread misinformation.

  • So Les Paul doesn't get credit for inventing the electric guitar?

  • I had no idea they were playing steel pan in Japan. I must spread the news. This is super!

  • It sounds terrific, and it must be so much fun for them playing it. I love the more upbeat pan music :D

  • This was really good. Please could someone tell me what the name of the song is. Thanks.

  • The song is titled "Fruits Basket".

  • sounds great...

  • Terrific! I always love steel drum music, and they look like they're having such fun playing this song. Thanks for posting this!

  • It's not a drum...please don't refer to it as such, it detracts from the genius employed to create it and diminishes the skill necessary to elicit the range of notes produce.

  • It is made from a "DRUM" - a steel drum that was originally used to transport oil.

  • Piano keys are made from ivory... do you call a piano an elephant? Do we call a guitar a tree? The steelpan is more akin to a xylophone or marimba than it is to a true 'drum'.

  • i agree. another major reason why it should not be referred to as a drum is because it has no skin covering

  • it is mad e from an oil drum..

    hence the name steel drum

but i prefer steel pan it sounds better to me

  • thats just great! seriousely, big ups!

  • this song really sweet, wish i had heard it live. big up japan

  • Ollyuh nearly like di Trinidadians self maun!

  • Rock on Japan!

  • Great music....makes ya wanna dance and raise hell.....>:)

  • o0o crap... they do sound like the real thing!

  • ahh they sound just as amazing as de trinis!

    wonderful!

  • whats is the song's name?

  • Listening is a real mood booster. What is the name of this piece. They are fanatastic

  • This song is titled "Fruits Basket", which is composed by the leader of de band, Yoshi Harada.

  • I love alliteration and this provides great opportunity: a Japanese jump up!

    :-)

  • Brilliant!!! I am from Trinidad and I am so delighted to see and feel the how another culture has embraced our music. BRAVO

  • This music really swings!

  • Feeling it.

  • simply brilliant. I want to play in a band like this.

  • Im from trinidad and i must say this sounds very very good.

  • Love this tune! Its so happy and go lucky! Listening to it makes me smile! :)

  • this is true caribbean flavor. I love my trini music

  • Love this happy tune.

  • This is a direct result of Trini arrangers and players living working and spreading our culture in Japan...Good work guys.

  • you guys are great!!

  • The musicians look like they're having so much fun - as much fun as the audience. Great!

  • Absolutely brilliant. Steel pan music truly transcends cultural boundaries

  • Wow amazing!!! It is so great to see the influence of Trinidad culture all over the world. Trinidad's invention has definitely taken the world by storm.

  • i love it...

  • Excellent. This must be a result of Trinidadian input over the years. Well done!

  • It is not just the steel but the rhythm and tempo in which these wonderful youths gyrate. Japanese youth are coming to appreciate the universal cultural diversity of the human race. The rhythm of steel pan ala Trini style is unique and while most are astonished by the instrument itself tuning to the beat/tempo proves difficult even for our closest cultural neighbours. This is a master cultivation act.

  • It is suprising yet gratifying to see the appeal of the steelpan in such an orderly culture. The players seem to be really enjoying the sound of steel and play with a distinctive clarity that extends the range from traditional steel pan rhythms.Steelpan Trinidad's gift to the world!

  • it is a joy to see this instrument that was invented in Trinidad being played in every corner of the world.
