i was buddy best friend and that,s how i got to work for sinatra buddy was the best at what he did and joe was the best at what he did no one is the best of all and that is how we all learn from people like that see phil ambros on youtube sinatra and phil ambros on the set buddy and sinatra gave phil on his birthday however joe morell to me was as cool as it get,s as a drummer i hope god has a place for joe after all he did for drummers all over the world....phil ambros
If you want to improve your drumming go out and get Master Studies I and II. It will revolutionize your playing. It has rudiments, true, but in the context of practical exercises which will build your skill tremendously. It really works.
@samtotheg ... I am not into " best " or " better than " ...but I agree with you , i enjoy Joe`s playing more than Buddy`s .... in my opinion Joe had all the chops Buddy had but with more musical phrasing ability ... joe is the most musical drummer i have ever heard
That was awesome, thank you for posting it. I have never seen this particular Morello solo, do you have any information and details of this performance?
that, was epic. i love the true skills of the old drummers. independence, dynamics, sound and volume control, and pure skills and no technology to enhance it.
Does anyone else find it really odd that at the end when they show the band, everyon'es wearing their normal suits.. yet Dave is wearing a white check shirt..? lol
I saw this entire session way back in the early 1970's, one Sunday morning, and have been looking for it ever since. This Morello solo was the highlight of the entire 1/2 hour show. I've seen alot of Morello solos, and this one still ranks as the best. It's riveting!
This really shows how good of a drummer he is. All the other solos are great too but with the accompaniment this shows great technique of playing through the bars not just across them.
Study the rudiments, develope rythm, study the rudiments, study the rudiments and keep your kit small to begin with. Oh yeah, and study the rudiments.
thats just it, Joe Morello was s melodic player than the big band guys (krupa, rich, bellson) I have read morello say that those guys were about power, speed, doing superhuman things on the drumset. Joe wanted to have more of a melodic approach, he continued to say that he always admired Max Roach for his melodic approach to playing drums

Come on man, Keith Moon in the same league as Gene and Joe? That's just an absurd comment.

Buddy and Joe are in the same league. One is more traditional swing, the other less conventional and experimental...both genius and alien!

joe could beat on a tin can with a pencil and it would sound like magic.
