  • irateradio made a comment: " the whole point of the event is that your coming to watch the drummer not the music ..." What an asinine comment. If that were true then leave the rest of the band home and just let the drummer play. Great drummers (like Buddy Rich, Tony Williams) know how to play "musically" with the ensemble; adding to the music - rather than dominating the music. Great drumming is more that pounding full throttle every second.

  • @crankabit Ya man give vinnie a call and tell him he needs to listen to Tony Williams. What are you serious??? I'm pretty g damn sure Colaiuta listened to Tony Williams a FEW times and has been called a mix of williams and gadd. All Im sayn is that you should shut the hell up and if you play, go practice till ya realize how naive you were when you said that a couple hours ago.

  • Thing is .... it's not ALWAYS about you Vinnie. When somebody else takes a solo, don't step all over them. Lay back man. If your always pounding your ass off then there aint no contrast.

  • f you loser!!!!! YOU SHUT THE F UP, GO PLAY YOURE TRIANGLE!!!! YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THIS ,AND ITS ABOUT DRUMMING ,ITS BR TRIBUTE SUCKER!!! I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU!!!

  • just Vinnie....

  • ta loco este cabron

  • Solid...just solid! Bravo Vinnie!

  • @metalmetal9

You call vinnie a shitty caveman?¿

    Buy a justin bieber record…8P

  • Vinnie…is Awesome!…

  • I'm just wondering who the hell can dislike this...

  • Vinnie el mejor!!!!

  • You can watch this vid in 20 more years and will still be memorable.

  • I'm not aware of any "extreme drummer" who can perform music at this level. Anyone can play fast, it's just a matter of repetition. To play like Vinnie, you have to master all facets of music. Gene Hoglan is the only guy that I think could get there today. Those human metronomes set to 300 bpm don't do anything for me.

  • I managed to work that fill at 2:54 into an original tune. I love the way it flows.

  • @danlc95 nice.....I do that kind of stuff aswell ..... inspiring fills, practise as much fills as you can and then put them in songs

  • The King!!!

  • Amazing, I've been watching this for 20 years or so, and it still seems ahead of its time. Ahead of this time! Miles ahead! Legend.

  • incredible solo and drumming, obviously. But what a stupid song. "And now! From our studio audience in Los Angeles. Heeeere's Johnny!"

  • Ferocious.

  • this is true drumming and not this damn boring death metal blast beat and 400bpm double bass shit.

  • @loouuni death metal sucks, metal core sucks, jazz and progressive metal rules :d

  • Does Vinnie use Attack drumheads in this vid?

  • @jspfgh no those are the ebony series of remo

  • he is a true drumgenous

  • 2:49-3:00 what the hell man......

  • the origin of head banging lol

  • Thanks Vinnie! I can die now.

    Dan

  • Amazing. Really drives the band.

  • ho la la

  • ho la la

  • WTF, i have the chart for this tune, how does vinnie do that shit. He sees time as three or four dimensional. The little glance down at the chart near the end is just taking the piss as he then rips those next figures with great accuracy. What a legend, what a god damn genius!!

  • that is unreal. precise and inspired. The best that song has ever been.

  • the accuracy and the speed of the fill from 2:09 to 2:12 or 13 is......I remain speechless everytime I see this even if I watched this many many times

  • You negative guys should stop writing comments and start practicing. Enter the woodshed and study. Play MUSIC. Don't get focused on "extreme drumming". Every pro I talk to confirms that Mr. Colaiuta seem to come from beyond this world.

    He is outstanding.

To play drums means to play from within your deepest soul, with ultimate attitude coming with each stroke you do, may them be the softest or loudest you ever played.

And your groove has to be played to reach the hearts of people listen to it.

  • If you're a drummer and you don't appreciate ANYTHING vinnie, gadd or weckl do then you're just NOT a drummer, in my most HUMBLE opinion!

  • @Drumming2thelord agreeed

  • @Drumming2thelord Well said!

  • @Drumming2thelord you are not fully human i would say, more in the realm of apes :p

  • thank you, the negative 3 is wrong.

  • Buddy Rich did do some pretty impressive stuff....but I hear a lot of people saying hes the best that ever lived, which i dont agree with.... as Buddy himself claims that he never practiced.

  • @ApplianceOperator I just have no words. How can someone be that ignorant? You are talking about one of the best 3 drummers in history buddy. go put your sit in the drum set and learn and maybe one day you'll appreciate who is good. wow, still impressed, I didn't think I would see the most stupid comment in my life so young,

  • overplayed but fantastic!!!

  • Vinnie Colaiuta- A modern example for the next generation.

  • 3:06....STYLE ! ! !

  • play the tune and try sounding half as good as Vinnie... then you´ll know what you´re talking about.

  • 0:48 is a great camera angle. Nice to see Vinnie from the floor tom side for a change.

  • Dang.....Im mad he's doing this in a suit....Good stuff!!!!!

  • At this time (late in the eighties), he was going sick ! So much energy and feeling...

  • At 4:43 .....he turn his head and he looks at the partiture....

  • so what kit is this? it looks like a recording custom but they were never made in white.... was this a custom color?

or is it a different make of yamaha... just those lugs scream RC...

  • to be fair i think if vinnie wanted a white recording custom kit they would have made one for him :P

  • yeh i figured.

  • One of the best drummer ever.

  • Funny...Freakin' critics around here that can only dream that they can play like Vinnie...

Show some respect people...You are looking at one of the top 5 drummers alive today

  • I enjoyed this very much. Not very jazzy, but he doesn't give a sh**. Reminds me of my own way of playing; doesn't care about what he's supposed to play, he just plays is own style and enjoys it. That's important for a drummer. But I agree with that he, at least some times, was a bit to loud, hehe...

  • Dennis may not have the best swing feel. but his funk feel/pocket is out of control.

  • Humm... at the beginning, I think he forgot it was a jazz song and also accents are too loud! But, I don't blame him because I'm sure he is not a "jazzman" like Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa was so if he does'nt concentrate on this musical style it's not so bad...

  • i think jazz is more about improvisation than quietness

  • Exactly. Look at Tony Williams for example, who happens to be Vinnie's biggest drumming hero.

  • his swing might not be the best but his accents turn that "not so good swing" into great orchestra hits and in big band jazz that's kinda of a big thing because that is what gives impact to a great performance. and knowing when to give these accents (chops as you would say) makes him a great drummer.

  • Everyone has their own feel for the ubiquitous swing pattern. Some play with a triplet feel, others border on the extreme dotted eighth-sixteenth pattern, some are in the middle. It's not right or wrong, just Vinny's interpretation....

  • sure i totally agree and its actually what i love so much about rythm, how its so diverse but always potentially possible to sound good if the musicians can make it sound good, but i think vinnie kills the feel with his instant showoff of chops. nothing on his skills, he is an insane drummer but this isnt working

  • i think if you'd just won best drummer of the year you'd be doing a bit of showing off too!

  • well then you'd be an idiot as well, and i think vinnie made a mistake playing like a noob here, because it is not very musical what he is doing, its just showoff, but the some of the drummers at this event really made the chops a sport (chambers, vinnie weckl etc.)

  • chambers has no feel, vinnie does- he's a god he can do anything he wants; if gadd pkays nothing for a bar of solo and gets outrageous applause then im sure vinnie can demonstrate his technique

the whole point of the event is that your coming to watch the drummer not the music- obviously vinnie wouldnt do this at a sting gig!

  • thats a pair of really wierd statements. Chambers has tons of feel, prolly not the born big band drummer but he can play very well. - Well what ever you say i cant help feeling vinnie overplaying here, he might be a god but still this doesnt work very well. if people only came to watch the drummer, well first of all the most important task for the drummer is to keep time and SWING! swing is caused by phrasing and dynamics, vinnie fucks up the dynamics right here. music and drumming is more!

  • yes but the context is whats important, as i said he wouldnt do this at a sting gig because he would get fired!

im pretty sure if you payed to go the drum awards and the winner then played a simple groove keeping time then you would be equally dissapointed- just like if Steve Vai did a gig and just played some power chords!

I.M.O i think although chambers has chops gallore- he is too robotic/ mechanical and lacks a "feel" in his playing- something that comes natural to someone like Chad Smith

  • Of course it's musical, he's nailing the hits flawlessly (which is rather important in big-band stuff) and swinging like a mofo. Vinnie's pocket is a mile deep even when he's blazing chops. It might come across as being showoffy, but that's just his style at the end of the day.

  • Vinnie.......i haven't words....

  • Buddy would have loved this!

  • BEAST!

  • Vinnie's the best alive. More musical than Weckel, with all the technique.

  • I never get tired of watching this performance.
