I was just wondering your snare is on the left mine is on the right should it be on the right if im left handed. I've been drumming for 2 years XD self taught u see lol thanks
@Musemaniac247 Hey! The snare should be in the center between your legs. If you want, watch Tom Sawyer and you can see the proper setup better. I have some overhead cams. Anyways (sorry to get a little off topic), I know lefty feels more comfortable to you... with that said, try playing righty. That's what Aaron Spears (Usher, American Idol Tour) did and he's one of the best drummers in the world because of it. Your left side is your dominant side. Therefore, if you play righty, you will (Cont.)
@Musemaniac247 (Cont.) build all the muscles in that side to be equal to your left. That is something very few rightys can ever accomplish. It will make both sides be super strong. Hope that helps. Peace.
@Musemaniac247 if your lefty you play the hi hat with your left hand therefore the hi hat should be on your right and the suspended cymbal on your left bass drum pedal left foot unless you have double bass pedal
One last piece of advice....don't let your instructor change your core skill-set/style too much...you need some refining, and some technique-sharpening, and just a few more "tools in the tool box" (as Neil would say)...but you surely don't need to change anything about your soul. YOU ROCK!
Here's to you, NOT so little dude,...YOU DA MAN!...you are a giant drum-playing man among boys, and could probably put most men, who've been playing for years, to shame. You're only 11 years old?!?!! Like wow man! It's absolutely AMAZING that you did this without any formal lessons! I can't even begin to imagine what you will be "shreddin' on the skins" once you get a few years of formal lessons under your belt. And this is coming from a long-time drummer & fan of RUSH (since the 70's).
I hope that real music returns someday so talented players such as you will have a venue. Keep up the good work, Owen. You are the hope of rock music's future.
Owen, Outstanding percussion !!! your a natural Rush is a favorite of mine, I been listening to them since the 70's. I very impressed with your accuracy every fill in its right place.
Very very well done, you re a talented guy indeed. With the level of skill you already possess, I can see nothing but a bright future for you. However, you're working much harder than you need to. You might want to look at repositioning your kit as you're having to stretch up and out way too much and I'm sure it can't be too comfortable.
Owen what can I say that I didnt say @ my last posted my comment 2 u.Have u ever thought about getting in contact with rush's management? It would be really cool if u sent geddy alex and neil a demo of some of their songs youve covered.it would be great if you were able 2 do a project or something with them.In a few years ull make neil sound like old hack lol.You most definitely got the talent and the chops dude.one love peace out.
OMFG!!! That rules buddy! Can't wait to see you in a few years when you make Neil look like an amatuer. lol. but seriously, have you made any attempts to contact Rush Mgmt to see if you could somehow do something with them or Neil at least. I know they're pretty easy going guys. They're always doing crazy things. It would be great to see you jam this with Geddy and Alex!
Owen - you are doing a great job. It's good that you are studying with someone, he'll help you work out some of those technical issues that will make your good playing become great. Sounds like you're doing all the right things. The only suggestion I would make would be to lower those high rack toms and maybe lower your cymbals just a tad so they aren't so hard to reach. You remind me of someone when I was about your age. :-)
Yes you are awesome! AND I agree you and "Iguitarwith" need to get together and jam, I hope the both of you succeed. It is truly a pleasure to see young people really getting into instruments and learning how to play and have a passion for it. I am a big Prince fan and grew up in the 80's; well I was a teenager in the 80's and I love to see people that play and not just some computer playing mixes of other peoples stuff. Keep up the great work!

Hey Owen, Happy 4th of July. Just one question:(as if I already haven't asked you enough questions). It says you take your videos with a flip camcorder. So do I. But when I do, my video will still distort sometimes(do you know what I mean.) But your's doesn't. Why is that? And yes, I do keep my camere a good distance away from my drums. Thanks for responding to all my questions and I'm sorry I have so many. I'm sure time is precious.
I'm a drummer. Im 12. I love RUSH! This was the first song i ever tried to play on drums. I have a PDP kit, what type of kit you got? DW? its a pretty tricked out kit you got haha. Keep it up man! btw lower your cymbals.
Awesome Awesome Awesome Job! Very dedicated and you definitely have the feel for what your playing. I've been a Rush fan for over 15 years now, and i'm also been an avid drummer off and on since i was 8 years old.. and i can honestly say that even today there are many parts in this song that I still need lots of practice on. It's all in how much time you devote to it. I can also say that you are 'into it' 100%, especially at your age! Keep it up, because you truly enjoy what your doing!
@n2112bytor2112p I can assure you that I am not lying about my age. I was eleven when I posted my first four drum covers. I turned twelve in June of 2010. I posted a few more and then people started asking me for a beachless video of me playing R30 Overture. I dug through my archives and found one that I had recorded when I was eleven. We just never posted it because we were unhappy with the lighting.
@OwensDrumming gotcha, im 12 goin on 13 and im a drummer too, my dads been teaching me since i was four, u should get a glockenspiel so you can play the parts during the spirit of radio, xanadu, ect...
@IronFabianSteel THANK YOU!!!!!! Comments like these are what keep me going. YOU GUYS inspire me to keep doing what I'm doing. Even when I'm frustrated because I'm having difficulty learning a part or something, I look at comments like these and somehow it helps me to pull through.

im a drummer on and off but i really wana show wat i can do on youtube, if only i had a hd cam... ur my motivation though dude RUSH rocks!!! thanx 4 ur time and God bless
@IronFabianSteel Haha, thanks! :) Also, about the camera, don't worry about it. I'm only using Flips...that works for me! You even could use a smartphone and get great results. Lighting is everything. Even more important than the camera though, make sure you have good audio. Pick up a cheap drum mic kit from Audix, Samson, etc. and a decent preamp; M-Audio ProFire 2626 is what I use, but you can get cheaper ones that do the same thing.
Awesome video tips: search MattsMacintosh on YouTube
heey mate, i am also an aspiring 14 year old drummer with a love for Rush and Neil Peart .
i went to see them on the 22nd which was an amazing experience.
i love your enthusiasm to play and how you were self taught and now chose to have lessons. I had lessons straight from the start and they have extremely helped. i hope to speak to you in the future about more drumming.
Owen I think you are going to be a big icon In the music industry .Welcome to the Shred master club,,,you are a D....R....U.....M shred master.I would have you as a Percussionist any time..While i shred on guitar.... and you shred on drums.keep up the good work.I looking forward to the next song you play..............YEAAAAAA
Guys! Enough with trying to push your techniques on this kid. Id be willing to bet none of you could play Neil at 11. I play with my cymbals "too high" as well. But it works for me. Ownes technique will evolve as he grows. But by all means...stop trying to teach a kid that is light years ahead of all of you at this point in his life.
@dueypupboy911 If you look at my videos from Fly By Night onward, everything is much lower and easier to get to. I started developing pain from playing this way, so I went ahead and lowered everything. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad that you enjoyed.
@maureetooo Haha, that's just me concentrating. These songs require a TON of concentration and energy so sometimes I make funny faces. That happens to everyone. I can't help to laugh when I see some of them.
@freehugys I may not look eleven, but I can assure you that I was eleven when I posted this. I agree with you though in the sense that I do look a little older in this video. This wasn't cut long after my Subdivisions video. You can see how much younger I look with a hat on.

Lighting is everything. Even more important than the camera though, make sure you have good audio. Pick up a cheap drum mic kit from Audix, Samson, etc. and a decent preamp; M-Audio ProFire 2626 is what I use, but you can get cheaper ones that do the same thing.

heey mate, i am also an aspiring 14 year old drummer with a love for Rush and Neil Peart .
i went to see them on the 22nd which was an amazing experience.
i love your enthusiasm to play and how you were self taught and now chose to have lessons. I had lessons straight from the start and they have extremely helped. i hope to speak to you in the future about more drumming.
keep in touch. speak soon :D

How did you remove the drums from the song to add your own, or are you playing along with the drums in the song?.

mamadodo109282 10 months ago
Nice stuff Owen,

Lower ur cymbals A little
dueypupboy911 10 months ago
@dueypupboy911 If you look at my videos from Fly By Night onward, everything is much lower and easier to get to. I started developing pain from playing this way, so I went ahead and lowered everything. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad that you enjoyed.

@OwensDrumming Why do you hold your drumsticks right at the bottom doesnn't it start to hurt?
deancook07 8 months ago
why the faces? jajaja. :) nice, very nice.
maureetooo 10 months ago
@maureetooo Haha, that's just me concentrating. These songs require a TON of concentration and energy so sometimes I make funny faces. That happens to everyone. I can't help to laugh when I see some of them.

@OwensDrumming I do the same thing when I concentrate lol. Most of the time I don't realize it either

@freehugys I may not look eleven, but I can assure you that I was eleven when I posted this. I agree with you though in the sense that I do look a little older in this video. This wasn't cut long after my Subdivisions video. You can see how much younger I look with a hat on.
