I've been learning Mandarin for a while now. Is it just me, but Deng Xiaoping can't speak Mandarin?? He sounds rather like my hakka grandparents speaking mandarin...

Yea, Deng speaks in a heavy Sichuan accent. Mao on the other hand speak in a hunan accent.

Deng can speak mandarin, but with a very strong sichuan accent. I am chinese,sometimes I also can't quite follow the sichuan accent.

I'm British, but of HK ancestry, and hence I know cantonese. The strange thing is that i can actually decipher what he's saying, unlike say someone with a northen chinese accent.
