1:35 Where's Superman and Batman? Is this a reference to how little they were used in the first JLA comic books in the early Sixties?XD Awesome speech btw.
Who else loved this movie a lot? I know I did... while Batman kinda came off as relatively meh (I can't believe I dissed Batman!) I like how they went with a very... unusual route for Superman and Wonder Woman. Frankly, they did not resemble their normal modern counterparts all that much. Superman KNEW he was powerful, and that was why he was the leader, yet obeyed his own morality to a fault. Kinda golden/silver agish. Wonder Woman was frankly more militant than normal, which suited her.
I am tearing up. JFK was a great man, and this movie demonstrates the hope in good people and a better future which good men die for. It might be fiction but the moral about brotherhood transitions into real life.
Kingdom Come is a good idea for a movie but I think that Warner Bros likes to keep these movies at 80 mins so they can air it on Cartoon Network. And 80 min is absolutely not enough time to do Kingdom Come. Maybe they could do it as a 2 parter. It worked for the Family Guy movie right?

I found that in general, the movie was a little too negative and pessimistic for my golden-age-loving tastes, but this is easily the best part of the film. If the whole film had tried to carry off this mood of hope and inspiration, instead of focusing on corruption so much, it would have been a much better movie, in my opinion, but I realize that there were trying to base it on a comic book that had the same problem, so they only had so much freedom in that respect.
That is true. But I think what Darwyn Cooke was trying to do was use real world events and real social-political feelings of the 1050's "in universe" to show the decline of the super hero genre, and it's ultimate revival by the 1960s. Things like the red scare and Mcarthyism were prevalent. I'm surprised that he didn't make an allegory to Fredrick Wortham. But ultimately the heroes are able to bounce back and by 1960 a new area of hope was dawning.
Perhaps. I still prefer the kind of storytelling done by Mark Waid in Kingdom Come, where the horrible catastrophes eventually do lead to a lot of their problems being solved by the end of the book. I honestly didn't think the conflict in New Frontier really resolved anything. (Aside from, you know, saving people's lives.)
See, that's the thing. It really didn't. If you've followed American history since the days of JFK, there's been a marked and continual decrease in responsibility, civility, wisdom, clear morals, and resulting from those, of confidence across the board. Not just in politicians; throughout America; especially since the 1970s. New Frontier wants to convince us that this continuity is in "our world," but if it is, things are about to get much, much worse for them.
No. "Things" didn't get better. They got worse. To end it with "and the world continued in basically the way you remember it" is the darkest pitch-black ending you can possibly use; especially now that the 1950s are over.
vastly it is due to the american departure from strong belief in christianity. yet though shedding that one moral code may leave us adrift for a while, it gives us the opportunity to find something better. Freedom from the evil dictator that is the christian god will ultimately be good. Trying out freedom for the first time, we scarely know how to walk by ourselves, but we will learn.
I'm sorry, but while I agree that the wholesale abandoning of Christianity is the reason for all this evil, I fear I can't agree with you about man's ability to do better on his own. Human beings are still basically selfish, savage creatures, and without some objective standard to be held to, they reveal their true colors.
Well perhaps i have a much higher opinion of humanity than you. I think we are basically good but this evil world confuses and robs us of purpose, sometimes by a very early age, and leaves us vulnerable to evil. Yet the basic drive for good will always be there in some and those few will slowly reshape society and society will reshape the rest.
Yeah. I never fell in with this belief, because I don't personally have much of a drive for good, myself. That's why I focus on superhero fiction and other things; to keep me thinking about heroic deeds, in the hopes of convincing myself to do right. It usually works, when there's real heroism involved, but for me anyway, goodness comes from conscious decisions to act against my own baser nature.
well, why are you trying to convince yourself to do right if you don't have a drive for good? stop thinking of a few animal urges as you and start thinking of those concious choices as you.
One reason and one reason only. Intellectually, I know there are bad, bad consequences to any wicked deed I do; consequences that would effect me personally. That's what I've come to conclude; my emotions are wicked and cruel in the extreme, but when I grasp for higher reason, I have a chance to do right regardless.
The problem is that you can't encourage reason in a whole generation of people. Somehow, you have to give them a bigger incentive.
@mytruepower2 Lad, I hate to say it, but I only halfway see what you're getting at. Superhero fiction helps, aye, but think on this. I have animal urges, but my personal morality is kept ahead due to some minor trauma centered around one big urge: protect those you love. The important thing to remember is that your urges are only part of who you are. Your conscious decisions concerning those urges make your morality. And I always thought of superheroes as useful mediums for these thoughts.
Yup. That's the point. We all need a reason to overcome and go beyond our feelings, and come to an understanding of personal morality, which the last couple of generations, by and large, lost track of. For this, we need incentive to BE better; instead of just GETTING better things for US, and superheroes are only one means of motivating ourselves to make this choice.
Historically, though, this one took place just before the really big problems with personal morality started.
And let me be clear on what I mean here... When I say "personal morality," I mean "morality which effects only you, as distinct from social morality, where immoral actions hurt somebody else." I don't mean that you get to make up your own morality. You don't.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Not just animated movies, but all kinds of film - period. It's just that good.
BTW, one thing that really made me happy was how each character really got a chance to shine. No one was overlooked. Everyone had that one moment where they did something on screen that was memorable. From Green Arrow saving Batman in his jet to Aquaman finding Superman's body at the bottom of the ocean - it was all handled really well.
See, that's just the thing. Marvel could have been noble and uplifting, but they decided, again and again, to abuse their characters instead, because angst sells comics. You'll see this in the constant bad luck of Peter Parker, or the mindless bigotry that took center stage in X-men since the Clairmont days. If Marvel wanted to be something inspiring and fantastic, they could probably do it. It's just that they don't seem to want that.
True, but I honestly think it was an issue of Marvel Comics having a negative impact on their competition. Virtually the whole industry followed them into the angst-mobile.
True. Much of their stuff has been less angsty and upsetting recently, just not enough of it. It's still an unfortunate trend in comics to be depressing and a downer.
20 - 30 years ago, they wouldn't have included such a historical " tie - in " scene or scenes, simply because they thought that young minds wouldn't comprehend such a thing. Now - It's a different story !! They should've added " footage " of other scenes - Vietnam, The Apollo missions, MLK & similar.
@MusaMansu Well, I should be offended, because if you thought I meant it, then you visualized me as a redneck and retard, with a dodoface and mush as brain. Nice.

Love all the references to all the heroes that weren't as popular like the Metal Men. Too bad this film was geared more toward an older audience, seeing some material to get the older generation heroes up again would be nice.
I liked how hal Jordan Green Lantern got the spot light in this movie for once, instead of superman hogging the spotlight like he has been for the last freakin century.
That's Black Canary. She was a member of the Justice Society in the '40s and got back into the hero business in the '60s.
Except for Supergirl, all the characters behind Black Canary are members of the Teen Titans from the '60s - Kid Flash, Speedy, and Aqualad. Robin and Beast Boy aren't shown there, while Raven, Starfire, and Cyborg didn't appear until the 1980.
Gives me goose bumps every time, Kennedy's speech mixed with the classic heroes of the Silver Age just reminds me of a time in American history were people were excited about the future of this nation. The world seemed to feel the same way when Obama was elected. Hope he can deliver...
What makes the concept of the superhero so appealing that they have lasted for over three generations? I beleive it is the thought that a man or woman, given power beyond mortal men, would choose to do good even thought it is hard. Even though no one would be able to stop them and they could do anything they wanted, the "superheroes" chose to use their gifts to better the lifes of others before themselves. They represent the what all mankind should strive to be. We can all learn from them.
Oh Gosh!! I just finished watching "New Frontier" on Cartoon Network. JFK's speech really brought me to tears. It was broadcast too late at night. Damn Time-Warner for being so chicken of Parent's Television Council. Something of such power and ideals as this! It needs to be on for the kids during the afternoon hours to watch. This is the sort of thing we need kids to see. Maybe it'll make them actually think, question, and feel empowered. As Kennedy said, "My call is for the young at heart"!!
At the end when they are showing the original JLA members, why isnt Superman and batman there? I thought they were part of the original team also. Can someone please explain this! lol Thank you
thanks51: what are ya stupid? getting chills means that your either cold or your watching something epic and JFK's speech WAS epic (especially with Superheroes in the background XD)
That's pretty much the point. The only superhero team in existence prior to the beginning of the movie disbanded before being dragged in front of HUAC. The last shots in this excerpt show the birth of the Justice League of America.

I liked how hal Jordan Green Lantern got the spot light in this movie for once, instead of superman hogging the spotlight like he has been for the last freakin century.
holydiver420 2 years ago 3
GL & The Flash got a lot more attention than Superman or Batman. The Martian Manhunter, as well.
A really Silver Age retro storyline. They need stuff like this rather than CN's new line - up of " reality " crap.

Black Canary
ljaye 3 years ago
That's Black Canary. She was a member of the Justice Society in the '40s and got back into the hero business in the '60s.
Except for Supergirl, all the characters behind Black Canary are members of the Teen Titans from the '60s - Kid Flash, Speedy, and Aqualad. Robin and Beast Boy aren't shown there, while Raven, Starfire, and Cyborg didn't appear until the 1980.
Hope that helps :D
Filby 3 years ago
Oops, I'm sorry, Robin was shown. And so is Wonder Girl, who was also a Titan member from the '60s.

On Wikipedia it says that Harley Quinn has a cameo somewhere in this speech, and I've watched it 3 times and still can't find her!

You can hardly see her, but she's behind the Joker in the villains montage.

Gives me goose bumps every time, Kennedy's speech mixed with the classic heroes of the Silver Age just reminds me of a time in American history were people were excited about the future of this nation. The world seemed to feel the same way when Obama was elected. Hope he can deliver...

Aquaman was barely in the movie. He was there for two seconds

As Kennedy said, "My call is for the young at heart"!!
narutofightindreamer 3 years ago 2
well I dont really think Iime-Warner controls cn's broadcast schedule
15thCrypt 3 years ago
I think it's more that the late evening is prime time than anything else. It's when you put the best shows.
Besides, this isn't really ment to be directed to children. The 'young at heart' doesn't mean toddlers and tweens.

I liked the way they used the original green lantern the one in the comics and the teen titans awesome.

"All mankind waits upon our decision. A whole world waits to see what we shall do. And we cannot fail that trust, and we cannot fail to try."
That gets me in tears, because it is SO TRUE right now, today.

At the end when they are showing the original JLA members, why isnt Superman and batman there? I thought they were part of the original team also. Can someone please explain this! lol Thank you
mete91 3 years ago
cause batman and superman weren't original members of the comic book JLA
theanaloge 3 years ago
When you watch the film with the commentary on, the filmakers admit to taking artistic liberty. They say, "This is OUR Justice league."

I watched this movie and it seems more like a DC in general movie.Never once do they state anything about a team or league
camkcam 3 years ago
That's pretty much the point. The only superhero team in existence prior to the beginning of the movie disbanded before being dragged in front of HUAC. The last shots in this excerpt show the birth of the Justice League of America.
