How I wish this class was recorded in English. Many useful comments noted the use of the metronome, I agree it is a must for learning an even tremolo. However, no one mentioned what setting the metronome should be to achieve an even tremolo! I would love to have this information. Who will tell the secret ? Thanks for sharing
Using a metronome is vital to learning a piece. I believe to master a piece, one must 1- learn the notes, 2- play the piece by the sheet, i.e. following exactly the tempo, and once this is achieved, add personal feelings/expressions to it...
and i forgot this if you practice with the metronome 30 minutes dialy you will see how plays better try it man really is so good you will play more fast and better..
i'm musician and i think you can't to play guitar very well if you don't practice with the metronome because you got to know the diferents beats and obviously you will play like a robot but this is important for a musician development and after you will play the guitar whatever you want with or without metronome...no problem
i play guitar for my own expression, who need metronome? of course you need to understand basic beats, but if music is expressed like robot than where is the art of music expression?
music is like painting there is no right or wrong. this people are fool and too proud.
@erictjie I think you should practice with metronome. after you get it even for a while maybe 1/2 hour then you set the metronome aside, and only then you alter the even strokes according to your interpretation, and feeling. Once someone old Segovia the same thing you said. In response segovia said "you must master he bat only hen you may alter it".
I think metronome is important in practicing tremolo. From my experience, being able to hear the eveness doesn't mean that one can play evenly. And when one is playing, it can be difficult to take care of the right tempo and eveness. just take a metronome and try, you may be suprised how un-even you are when playing.
I agree there are many other aspects like rubato, but eveness is the basis of everything else. One has to be able to "play like a machine" before not have to.
I agree with craigalake. Of course you can HEAR if you play tremoloes even or not, but if you dont play even you have a problem (like me), to witch you should find a solution. Then the use of a metronome can be helpful. As for the rubato.. let me use your picture of riding a bike: to be able to make a turn you must first master the balance while riding straight forward THEN you hopefully can make a safe turn. :)
(John Williams can't, so maybe a metronome would be useful to him!!)
1/2 Metronome practice is an extremely useful tool in obtaining a smooth, even tremolo. Of course the final interpretation of a piece of music is another matter and rubato and dynamics working together to shape phrases is of course essential. However, a perfectly even tremolo is also important in giving the illusion of a sustained note, which in turn adds to the lyrical nature of your tremolo. I don't know of a better way of achieving this than slow metronome practice.
I disagree; Anyone with an ear can hear evenness OR uneven-ness with their ear. Cultures with exceptional rhythm ability from Africa and India got along sans metronomes for thousands of years. It's a fallacy that you ever need one. It's a crutch. Like saying you HAVE to have training wheels on a bike first. Nonsense.
And it can never help you achieve tremolo with rubato — the hardest part.
Please translate the metronome settings into English
Thanks

every one of the top classical guitar players that i've ever read about recommends practicing with a metronome. but what do they know?
more importantly - their english is so bad i can barely understand them.

The difficult aspect to tremolo is adding rubato; which a metronome is USELESS for. Otherwise it sounds like a machine is playing.

what is rubato?
is there i vid that you know on youtube about rubato?
comosicusguitar 3 years ago
you give a note part of the time of annother note, kindof like stealing time from one to annother, thus its name rubato.

Rexicano you're right, music should be focused on emotion, not counting...
