Heh! As I'm looking through this, I'm sort of recognizing it, but not really (I was there from 84-85), then they start showing black and white photos and the announcer says, "...the facilities and living quarters were dilapidated and inadequate..." and NOW I recognize everything!
Wow. When you mentioned "Wiley Barracks" my heart froze: my Dad was stationed in Neu Ulm in the late 1960's and it was the happiest times of our lives. I would love to see photos....
I really like that video, brings back memories when the U.S. forces were often seen in town (and sometimes stuck with a truck in the 6'6" underpass). I remember once visiting the Wiley barracks on an "open gate" event where there was a Rodeo performance. The Wiley looks now different being a new residential area, but the name remains as the name of the new town district, as well as the street names. Google Maps recently updated the terrain view with new and highly detailed aerial photography.
I was the MILPO commander at Wiley in '84-85. Just got back from a first visit since I left, and the city is as beautiful as ever (except Germany is covered in mindless graffiti now - unheard of 25 years ago). Still, it has to be the most beautiful place on Earth. I was also in Nürnberg and Berlin and I congratulate the Germans on the miracles they've performed in their beautiful land. Can't wait to go back!
@MrDonkef I was there at the same time at 4/5th 1st ID. Well, there was the anarchy symbol on the wall by the side gate on Memmingenstrasse. That was there for a long time. You must have had your hands full in those days! A lot of bomb threats, terrorist infiltrations, etc. I agree, it's a beautiful city, but when I went back in 98, there were tearing down some structures and converting the barracks to Yugoslav refugee housing (according to a local). I'm going back again in 2013.
@bugwit 4/5th 1st ID was the unit where we had to have field grade Article 15s administered since our own BN commander was in Stuttgart, so I spent some time next door at your unit. Oh, and I agree the video didn't look like the "dumpy" post I remembered. They must have made all those improvements after we left. I used to volunteer for the dunking booth at the Ger/Am fest on post and overall, loved my time in Neu Ulm! Funny how no one saw theend of the Cold War in 85, then it just ended...
Hi all I was stationed here with B 2/5 FA. from 1987- 1990 I ETS'd 1in 1990 & been living here since. Lots has changed. Much has been torn down like the Arts & crafts most of Wiley (persching) has been torn down is now mostly appartment buildings.
My name is Steve Dunlevy, Army Brat... We lived in Neu Ulm from 70-74. My Dad was in the 1st/81st. Sargent John Dunlevy. We awesome times there... Went to High School in Augsburg...
@jandees99 Oh my God. You moved there just as we were heading back to Texas for the last time. I was 13. My older brother, Doyle Wayne went to Augsburg too. Was the A.Y.A. still there then, the back gate, the apartment buildings as you round the curve and that fenced off orchard to the left? Oh, wow. I would just die to get answers to these things. You know, those memories kept me alive through a really difficult situation I would go through later in life.
I was stationed there in early 1973 to Nov. 1974. I was in Pershing Missles. The Honest John Missles were there, too. I think it was B Battery, 81st Field Artillery. I was clearing when they were letting the last of the draftees get discharged. They asked me if I wanted to get out. Of course I told them NO. LOL
I still live here in Neu-Ulm (I'm born here :-) ) It was so awesome back then. I can remember how I was always in a bus, driving home after school. And so the bus drove past the Wiley barracks here. You can always see the army guys playing baseball, and I was like "Awesome! Just like in the movies" ;-D Because of you guys, I began to play american football here in germany. The Neu-Ulm Barracudas :-) Some of you played there, too. I was in the junior team back then ;-) Wow, I'm 30 years old today
I was stationed here in 85/86, and came back after discharge, and still live here as a civilian since 1988. Things change, everyone has to decide for the better or worse. The video is pretty good, but what makes me laugh, is the whole "Club Med" style of presentation. As my buddies and I were here (and later elsewhere in Germany), all we wanted was "OUT OF HERE" because most weren't here specifically while they chose to be, it could've been anywhere in Germany.
I was there 1960-63 with my father, we were there 27 monthe. went to school at nelson barracks.really enjoyed my time in neu ulm.

Well! "F" Me runnin'!!! Was looking at the old Inneringen Site on a satellite photo a few minutes ago (the place changed a lot, but still recognizable in the shots), and figgered what the heck, I'll take a look at Wiley Barracks too while "IN COUNTRY".
I was stationed A Btry, 1/81, 69-71. Still have good memories of my time spent there. Gonna send this Tube onto my old XO (CPT. Charlie Bunch), whom I have been in contact with over all the years since we did our BCC Site time together...
I was stationed there for three years working on the Pershing 2. Hard years, but proud ones. Thank you SO much for posting this and bringing back so many memories.
As a German I think the post war relations between USA and Germany are a wonderful story of success, but I wonder how you American soldiers feel in Germany.
Do you see us as friends or do you still distrust us? How do you think about the Germans?
@Lintflas Most of us thought the Germans were OK. On the other hand the Pershing mission was unique. The left and center of German society were against Atom weapons in Germany and there was some tension. I think the biggest problems were caused by GI's not being able to handle their liquor. Over all my experience in Germany was wonderful and I was happy to have served in Germany and thankful for the kindness of many, many Germans old and young.
Ok, thank you for your response. Yep, there were many Germans who feared nuclear weapons in the 80s, but this wasn't especially against Americans. I guess it would have been the same if it were russian weapons.
Anyway in the end I'm proud of the reliable and strong relations between our nations.
@Lintflas I was stationed in Schwabisch Gmund from 1974-1976. I traveled through Southern West Germany on assignment. I really enjoyed my time there although there was tension because of the Badar-Meinhoff Gang and Red Army Faction, not to mention the Soviet Spies. We were treated pretty good with some servicemen being young and immature. Sometimes I wondered how the Germans put up with us. I think everyone knew why we were there but some resented it on either side. Oh well, I had fun....

@Lintflas Most Germans ignored us, some hated us and said rude things. Some thanked us for being there, so we saw it all. It was very hard for me to get to know Germans very well - they seemed very insular - stuck to their family and life-long friends and not eager to get to know us. We Americans were young and on our own for the first time in our lives and drank a lot and acted like idiots. We knew that we were the source of most violent crime in Ulm.
Continuing-but speaking for myself, I loved Germany and was glad to be there, and prepared to defend it from the Soviets if it came to that. I still love Germany and I see it as our second closest ally after the UK.
Never experienced this upgrade. Was there for a couple months in early 69 before being assigned to Neckarsulm. Befriended a young German who lived across the street. It was a different time. My young friend and I were walking down the street when a WW2 vintage (prob Nazi) gentleman spit on the sidewalk in front of us.
87-90 hhb 2/5 fa worked in S-3 liked the video just reminds me how long ago it's really been. names R. Berry I remember Capo's, The Red Max, And Gorky park, The Italian restaurant down the street from the side gate named Roma's and the Chinese place around the corner from La Cave named The Panda.
I was stationed here from 1983-1986, 2nd of the 4th Infantry security platoon. Miss alot of my old buddies, Leroy Hinton, Jeff Brown, Derek Davis and staff Sgt. Norman Smith. The german girls were great too. Loved my time in Neu Ulm
Hi, I like the video. I was stationed in Leipheim and retired here. Still going strong is the Neu Ulm Amarican Legion Post 09. If you are planning on coming back give me a shout at 13Blackwing52
Brings back alot of memories, I was at Wiley from 81-83 1/81st co B 55th maint bn. married a German girl and still married, going back end of May for three weeks. cant wait. Get a lonesome feeling when I go back and see the place has changed so much, I mean wiley has changed. But I still love going back. anyone in the same Co. stationed the same years post back.
hello guys, maybe anyone could help me finding out how i can get some informations to find a person was stationed in neu-ulm wiley. Where can i ask for it...
Now i am searching for my Dad Paul JOnes over 20 years. He has been stationes on Wiley Neu-Ulm till summer 1970......my name is Simone and i was born on the 29.04.1970 in Ulm,my moms name is Ona (Anna) Motejaitis and she lived in Sedanstr. Ulm.Does anybody now Paul Jones ?May does somebody can tell me how i can find my Dad????
Today the cinema of Neu Ulm (Dietrich Theater) is on the area of the former american base. But the most of Ulm and Neu Ulm didn't changed very much since the 80s.
When it was warm out we'd walk to the Glacis Park just outside of the base and play in the pools, I loved the water cannons! I would love to go back and visit the area and see what's changed and tour the Munster and again.
@maxandfangswings Im a native Ulmer, and ich can only subscribe your post. The old times are gone, the water gones are gone, due to a expensive beer-garden. So many things have changed. I want to go back and visit the old area too ^^
OMGosh!!! Thank you for posting this video!! My father was stationed in Neu Ulm from '86 to '89. I was in the 2nd, 3rd, &4th grade here. I loved that place! I started crying when I saw the part of the playground and the slide (I'm a sap...lol). Some of my best memories are from this place. Our apartment was catty-corner from the front of the school and every morning my sister and I would take the long way to get there so we could stop at the fruit and candy stand and then go down the slide.
@maxandfangswings I also went to school there from 86-89 I lived directly behind the hill and remember going many miles down that slide. And going to the fruit stand before school in the morning.I also remember the water cannons at the bicycle park. I found a friend on facebook from that time its amazing how the internet brings back memories.
I was stationed at Wiley Barracks A-Btry 1st/81st F.A. Pershing ( 3rd Herd ) my highest Rank was E-4 I ended up being the Mail Clerk...Many a Great Times there..Me; (Specialist E-4 Bey ) Sgt Mannigault / Sgt Harden / Pfc Pouncey / Sgt Coker / Pfc Davis some of us ended up being Stationed at A-Btry 3rd Bn,9th FA at Fort Sill,Ok. :)
Uff I was born and raised there til I met my Husband from C 1/81!
He was stationed there til 1985 uffffffffffffffffffffff Liberty, Charly's aka Shake Up, Oldtimer, La Cave etc etc etc etc I WOULD LOVE TO FIND SOME PEOPLE FROM BACK THEN :-)
@qsbird Hope you still have the same E-mail I'm from Neu-Ulm and went to all the same Places. My name is Sabine I got married to a soldier from Nelson in 81.I would love to find some old friends from that time.
Funny to see all these places. I was born in 1991 and I know most of the houses and streets shown on this video - but today they look quite different :)
I was stationed in Neu Ulm, Wiley Barracks, Alpha Battery, 3rd Platoon, from feb 1984 to Jan 1986. It will always been my second home, I loved it there. Hung out at the club called "Shake up", lived at the Kornhauskellar down from the Munster Cathedral. Its been along time since ive been there, I want to go back to visit with my sons for at least 6 months if ever possible.
I do remember after you mentioned them, it was so much fun than, I knew a couple of people from charley battery at the time. Are you a german born citizen who married a solidier? I hope your life has turned out good since that time. Have you gone back to visit since 1985? hope to hear from you soon. jim
Well yes I was married to a Soldier, happily divorced after 18 years :-) Stayed here because of my son. He is a 100% American LOL or better said 100% Floridian! The last time I went back was in 2005 when my mother passed! Somehow I don't fit in there and I don't fit in here :-(
Thanks for the grat video! It reminds me to the very best time( 1984-1989) i had , with my american friends from Wiley Barracks (Bravo and Service Battery) .we spend al lot of time in Shake up, Adis Beerbar, Uncle Sam´s and had great parties at the lake. NU is not the same anymore without the army !!! kisses
Lived there from 1972-76 and again 1979-81 our last name was Munster. Dad was also with 1/81st. Let me know if we knew each other. Hope to here from you soon.
If your had a big family, and all of your brothers names began with a "W" and your sisters names all began with a "B", (Think 9 total in family)and you were also at Redstone Arsenal,Ala,(Huntsville)we sure did! Wayne & Brenda (the two oldest) were two of my old baby sitters waaaay back then!!!! I'm SFC Wright's (RIP)son!

Ive got a feeling Europe is going to become a country in the 21st or early 22nd century. History repeats itself like natural selection. EU fertilised the US and provoked its existence, helping it into something other than tribesmen sitting in stick tents. This time, EU's 7 of the top ten world economies, might combine and experience a giant revolution. maybe itll even give babies the right to not be religiously institutionalised and labeled at birth and show the u.s what true freedom is.
My late husband was in Delta Engineers from 75-78 Wiley Barracks. We lived on the economy for a while and then in base housing.. I have nightmares about the green and gold furniture
I'm verry unhappy that the US Military has gone from lm, my home country. I can remember when i was a little boy, I saw the soldiers walking trough or city. Now, most of the old military buildings are owned by social deprieved people. Ok, the Dietrich-Theater was buildet out to our biggest cinema in town. But all in all i can say that i wished you guys would come back :)
I was there 10-71 to 5-73 "B" battery,1st/81st F.A.. Beautiful place and people. Fond memories of all the sites. The four years of High school German helped quite a lot.
Was stationed at Nelson Kaserne (Air Force) best assignment I ever had in 20 years in the military!! I went back there back in 92 sure looked good except for Nelson being closed :(
It's a great pity that the Wiley and the Vorfeld housing have closed.
Nearly the whole Wiley got pulled down. Only the church, the club, the watertower and the sports field building been still there. The housing area have changed something too. It became to a social hot spot. Now there're living much soviets - isn't it ironic?
I lived on Wiley during 84 and 85 and it was a great place to be. They used to turn off the heat at night to save money, though. That's probably how we paid for all the re-building. heh.
That was awesome! I think I saw my apartment! Thanks so much for posting this. It was a great trip down memory lane. I wish it were still there to visit. Sigh

Like I told I was in the Kindergarten with a lot of american kids from 83-86.
I remember arguing with a god friend, a black kid about some transformer dolls ... Are their any other "kindergarten-mates"?

@maxandfangswings It chanched a lot :-)
The whole area is now a housing area....Nothing remains to the US-BASE.
The Ulmer Münster didn´t change... It is still there xD

Our apartment was catty-corner from the front of the school and every morning my sister and I would take the long way to get there so we could stop at the fruit and candy stand and then go down the slide.
maxandfangswings 2 years ago 3
@maxandfangswings I also went to school there from 86-89 I lived directly behind the hill and remember going many miles down that slide. And going to the fruit stand before school in the morning.I also remember the water cannons at the bicycle park. I found a friend on facebook from that time its amazing how the internet brings back memories.

Hung out at the club called "Shake up", lived at the Kornhauskellar down from the Munster Cathedral. Its been along time since ive been there, I want to go back to visit with my sons for at least 6 months if ever possible.

This movie is really nice - thanks pflandreau
Chefkoch2008 3 years ago
I lived on Wiley during 84 and 85 and it was a great place to be. They used to turn off the heat at night to save money, though. That's probably how we paid for all the re-building. heh.
