Remember that the guarapachangeo is a different more modern style of rumba and even though it has a vacunao it is not your usual guaguanco. It was developed by the Chinitos de Cuba (el barrio La Korea) while experimenting with trying to eliminate a drum. The dynamics are a bit different. El Breve espacio de Pablo Milanes? Y Yerba Buena son tremendos. Bomba with an attitude:) The Boricuas are incredible musicians.

Themusic is off the hook, all the players there masters! all of them, RIP the ones that are gone pero I don't think the dancers know what they are saying and why? maybe that was done purposely to mask the culture

Mira Mako I was born in Guanabacoa, Cuba in the center of the Afrocuban culture. I was born in it and lived it. I also lived in PR and went to Loiza regularly and learned a lot there but not rumba. Plena is what the Ayala's played there. But this guarapachangeo is rumba. And for you to say that these dancers are off ............come on! LOL!

I loved Calle 54. This is my scene. When this movie opened in Washington, DC the audience actually clapped at the end of every musical number. That shows the power of good music regardless of the culture.

The theme of the rumba guaguanco dance is a game of attraction and repulsion between a man and woman. The man attempts to touch the pelvis of his partner with his handkerchief, called a "vacunao". The vacunao symbolizes the man's possession over the woman. Just a little knowledge for the fans...

Only trouble is this is not a guaguanco but a guarapachangeo. A newer style of rumba than the Guaguanco, the Columbia or the Yambu.

This is by far my favorite descarga on film.  I hate when people try to deny the West African roots of Cuban and Puerto Rican music. It would be nothing without them!
