@gigalonupe You are correct. Slaves were not even considered people by some. There were arguments for representation of 1-1, 1/2-1, and 4/5-1. The north wanted 4/5 and the S wanted 1/2. It was mostly about taxation but later became concerned with representation. One question I had when studying is why do they get rep. I had the thought why not represent all property then. Some men said why not rep the horse and cattle too?! Property is what slaves were.

If 5 slaves = 3 freemen then mathematically (to convert what one slave would be mathematically, you use algebra and calculate for one slave and solve for the equivalent freeman): 5/5 slaves = 3/5 freemen or 1 slave = 3/5 freemen. Simple math says that one slave is 3/5 of a man. Once this is condoned by the government, it tends to be accepted as a generalized society rule.

What I dispute is the original intent of the 3/5 clause. It was not a statement of humanity but of worth of work and a method of taxation. The history of racial relations speaks for itself. I do not believe it is all the white man. However, slavery was not the main reason Lincoln invaded the South by far. He was fine with slavery existing in the South and even sponsored a Constitutional Amendment to not allow Congress to mess with the slavery in the south in an effort to appease slave owners so they would not agitate the state legislators to secede. A few errors here. 60 of 100 years the presidents were from the S. 2x Adams, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, Grant, Fillmore, Harrison, and v.Buren were all northern presidents. What Farrakhan should have said is that the majority were friendly to slave interests. The 3/5 comp. was not a question of a slave being equal to 3/5 of a human. It was 5 slaves=3freemen work. This was for tax purposes. North wanted to tax south property and south wanted that property valued low. Later 3/5 helped w/reps.

@gigalonupe You are correct. Slaves were not even considered people by some. There were arguments for representation of 1-1, 1/2-1, and 4/5-1. The north wanted 4/5 and the S wanted 1/2. It was mostly about taxation but later became concerned with representation. One question I had when studying is why do they get rep. I had the thought why not represent all property then. Some men said why not rep the horse and cattle too?! Property is what slaves were.

If 5 slaves = 3 freemen then mathematically (to convert what one slave would be mathematically, you use algebra and calculate for one slave and solve for the equivalent freeman): 5/5 slaves = 3/5 freemen or 1 slave = 3/5 freemen. Simple math says that one slave is 3/5 of a man. Once this is condoned by the government, it tends to be accepted as a generalized society rule.

@DRXCIX I do not dispute that it became commonly accepted that Africans were regarded as less than human by many in American society. The Dred Scott decision is representative of that. What I dispute is the original intent of the 3/5 clause. It was not a statement of humanity but of worth of work and a method of taxation. The history of racial relations speaks for itself. White Christians were and remain some of the most horrible people on the planet, not to say others aren't also racist.

Furthermore, it applies to SLAVES of ANY color and NOT freemen of African descent. None of those people had voting rights anyway. The compromise was to reduce the voting power of the SLAVEOWNERS who voted on the "behalf" of the non-voters in the state.

The slaveowners wanted to count slaves so THEY (southern landowners) would get stronger representation in Congress & Electoral College. Just look at the debates the Republicans were having for abolishing slavery in the Western territories to protect white labor from having to compete with slave negro labor and how since most slave owners voted Democratic then if slavery was allowed to expand Democratic Representation would expand and hurt the Republican Party. There were abolitionists who opposed it for moral reasons. However, the "Civil War" was not fought because of slavery.

It was one of Lincolns # 1 problems with the South and he Freed the slaves in the North before The Civil War..and after the war started he told southern slaves that any slave willing to fight would also be FREE..many fled to the North..and after the war all slaves were free men ..this was a huge reason for the Civil war in wich more white Americans died than any other war..white President Lincoln in his position against Slavery was also murdered like Kennedy for taking on issues like slavery !

I do not believe it is all the white man. However, slavery was not the main reason Lincoln invaded the South by far. He was fine with slavery existing in the South and even sponsored a Constitutional Amendment to not allow Congress to mess with the slavery in the south in an effort to appease slave owners so they would not agitate the state legislators to secede. His main concern was keeping the Union together and collecting the tariff from the South.

Real justice does not deal in ambigous collectives. All the victims of slavery are dead, as are all the perpetrators. You cannot justly compensate someone by stealing from someone other than the person who committed the problem in the first place.
