While Watson was an idiot and did ram a japanese vessel, it was a ship of about equal size and he its almost like he tried to do a PIT maneuver. as far as i know there was little to no damage done to the ship. This one, however was done on a ship of much lesser size that had little to no means of getting out of the way and actually sunk the ship. At least the Japanese should compensate Pete for the boat in my opinion.

Ady Gill violated the regulations and a collision resulted.The Ady Gil tried to cross in front of the Shonin Maru, but accelerated too late. The SS cameras were ready to film another harrassing close encounter. If I thought I'd be ramming a fragile small fibreglass boat into a large steel ship I'd be wearing an immersion suit... Oh wait, they all were.
Look carefully at something else. As the shonin maru approaches - the water cannon is in FRONT of the ship, it is then switched to go sideways, even though Shonin Maru is still going straight. The pilot may have been follwing the water spray for guidance - stupidly, and follwed it head on into Ady Gil. It can happen - I've seen stupid people on the road do that with hood ornaments, without taking stock of the rest of the traffic situation.
Another point - if the water canon was deflectable by motion of shonin maru - it most certainly would not have been aimed STRAIGHT ahead as the impact happened.
If you look the beginning of the video taken from the Ady Gil, when the Sea Shepherd activists are farewelling the Bob Barker, you'll notice a wake behind the speedboat, meaning it was moving.
Then on the video from the Shonan Maru 2, you can see the AG restarting its engine.
The question is why did it stop? Also, if the AG is was low on fuel, as SSCS says. why was the BB leaving them there?
Bethune is seen checking behind several times. Why did he stay static when he could see the SM2 coming?
If you go back far enough in time, you might want to ask why Ady Gil turned turned left instead of right five weeks ago.

In this case, I feel Ady Gil beign in motion prior to stopping is irrelevant. Shonin Maru was also stationary at that point.

It's kinda obvious what happened. Both ships were stopped. Ady Gil crew was not planning to go anywhere. Japanese guy was probably pissed because he can't pilot as good as others around him, and decided to play chicken with a sitting duck.
