Answer to 1: I can't really answer that, ask the people you are talking about. 2 No it doesn't justify, but it also doesn't mean you can one side a group of people.

Do the Have Nots flock here from Mexico, etc. for access to civil liberties, economic opportunity and decent treatment or do they come here because they feel drawn by America's beautiful forests and historical events? Be serious. What is wanted here is what has been built by U.S. citizens - economically and politically.
And of course you can "side" with one group of people. Do you know the difference between "right" and "wrong"? "Legal" and "Illegal". It's very simple. You either support folks who play by the rules and show respect for a place they want to make home or you advocate for lawlessness, identity theft and stealing from American taxpayers. And it has nothing to do with race. Choosing to violate immigr. statutes is a choice, skin color and ethnicity aren't.
To focus your thoughts on the issue a bit better, I offer this. Years ago we had 2 types of illegal aliens. 1. "economic refugees" with no status. Then there was no discussion, they were sent directly home. Being a compassionate country we accepted "political refugees", and still do. As in Cuba, China etc. Obviosuly, not a race issue. The illegal aliens also bring a pervasive attitude of a socialism with them. It is clear accepting a new American identity is not the objective.
What many of these people forget is that the majority of crimes comitted by illegals are against Other illegals.

The government wants to make sure that we have healthy and skilled workers coming into our country. They need to verify the validity of the individual's trip. For a lot of countries getting your visa is not easy. I know what the visa process is like.
I go to school overseas and I had to meet certain requirements that the government set to be eligible to receive a visa. Getting my visa cost me a lot of time and money. But I know that sine it not my country I have to play by their rules and I must respect their laws no matter how strict their immigration laws are. When you decide to circumvent the immigration law by coming into the country illegally you are in essence putting yourself in a position why people can and will abuse you.
You have no protection against those people and you have no rights beyond basic human rights. Even if you are a "good person" who only wants to "make a life for your family" you must essentially live a criminal's life hiding from law enforcement because you did break the law. You cannot live freely. Living freely is the whole basis of the American dream
There's something called forgiveness. It often derives from sympathy, empathy, or some understanding of a person's plight. When you Know a person's plight, it overrides whatever criminal factor's involved, particularly when there's nothing of moral turpitude. Wanting to help your family isn't a moral turpitude. It's in fact moral. To consciously keep your family in deprivation would be immoral.
Don't justify abusive acts. When you go to school overseas, it's probably a choice among many. Most illegals, particularly the ones from poor countries, come on the basis of humanitarian urgency, and it's in many ways their Only choice. You can't compare it in reality. Furthermore there's been a 20-30 year precedent of illegals coming in for labor, with no big deal about it. You've to take that into account as well, because it obviously sends a signal to people.
But what do you expect when you have several 2nd and 3rd world countries stone-throws away from the richest nation in the world. I mean you must consider reality too, not just theory.
