On Sept 12, 2011, I had a cardiac arrest and was put on a ventilator until 9/14 in the afternoon. I do not remember any of the events leading up to the cardiac arrest....after I woke up, I was told what a miracle I was, and was not expected to survive. This is the song that got me through my hospital stay and continues to minister to my weak heart. Praise God, we all can believe in a hill called Mt. Calvary.
Waiting for my voice to be completely healed in order to sing. God Bless
@Janicekrikorian I, too was rushed to the hospital for the same. I, too was a miracle. Twice in 2011. This song, and many others kept me focused on my mighty Saviour. Much self rehab, and faith, and my voice is back, so hang in there! HE will do it for you if you want it for His glory!
@Lizfootball read your Bible better. God never used "a drunk called Noah." God used Noah, who then later, after being used, got drunk once. I'm kinda tired of this whole "don't judge" thing some believers think is part of the Bible. Stop lifting a verse to suit your needs. Take the Bible as a whole. The Bible clearly tells us to judge multiple times. Try the spirits, Judge righteous judgement... Never forget where we came from, but don't let it be an excuse to brush a sin under the carpet.
I love David, but don't compare him to Pavarotti. Two totally different voices. If you listen to the old recordings of Pavarotti from the early to late 1970's, he's about as good as I've ever heard.
@Lizfootball Amen!!!!!!! And lest we forget Saul (later Paul of course) who persecuted the church and went on to be used to spread the Gospel of our Lord
@Lizfootball I agree......there, but for the grace of God, go I. Isn't that true for EVERYONE as there has been, in all of history, only 2 men who were sinless...the first Adam, who fell, the 2nd Adam (Jesus, the sinless Son of God), who died to set us free from sin and death. All I can think is that @mjwalker1973 must not be reading the same Bible I do??
Gaither knows how to surround himself with God-Gifted singers, whether Phelps, Pierce, Lowry....Penrod...doesn't matter. God gave Bill a gift for finding amazing voices. I'm a minister's kid and grew up hearing Gaither's kids' tunes ("I wonder how it felt...to wake up in the belly of a whale?"). That stuff. So, I'm classically trained and thinkin' about how I used to hear "negative constructive critique" at all my playing exams.ps: Mr. Luciano P. was God-Blessed with power AND clarity. Bello!!!
Maybe he was nervousm,I gave a cd where they sing this and Jonathan does a great job, stop comparing one singer against another, but since its a topic, there are songs that have been done that i prefer Jonathan's or wes version of it,there are songs where i like Marshall Halls way of singing it.You wouldn't listen if everybody sang it the same way, they each have their on style,Go listen to the cds jonathan put out and they tell me he can't sing,he is very verstile with his music
@hoover4000 Jonathan Pierce -and I believe he's a kid from Mississippi.....funny hou we've given the world so many darn fine singers (Elvis.....for one!), and players (BB King). He and Phelps are AMAZING. Guy raises the hairs on the back of my neck. Mark has a powerful tenor and Bill's just Bill--he has a very cool range. I <3 this tune and I think it's a fave.
I think I have been listening to just about every video on here.....they are amazing....and what a gift they have....I can only imagine praising our lord with that kind of a voice....wow.
I have no doubt that when the Gaithers have passed on.... GOD will look at the 10,000 angels who are singing His praises and say "You can rest now, The Gaithers will be handling the music from now on!"
you know. when we get to heaven. the songs up there will not be anyone songs we know. the songs will be heavenly songs. if you ask me, it will be songs of all praise songs put together, it will go in harmony. and that is what we will sing to praise our Lord Jesus.. but yea im sure the gaither songs will be in the mix. :-)
I love this song....I love all the songs these guys sing, but this one is special....I especially love that second verse -" I believe that the Christ who was slain on the Cross has the power to change lives today, for He changed me completely......' wonderful words sung beautifully by Guy Penrod!
It's the spirit behind the voice - he is truly blessed with the capacity to deliver the message in a way that resonates with your very being. Isn't it wonderful that he shares his gift with us!

This is not my favorite colaboration of the GVB. However the message transends who ever sings it. Listen to the words Bill put together praising our risen lord..... "BY THE CROSS I WILL STAND." We all cling to that old rugged cross......
Perhaps, but Jonathan is still a phenomenal singer as are all the other singers associated with the Gaither Vocal Band. This song is so powerful; at least it is for me, I don't care who sings it. :)
I want to share my story with the world. The Cross made the difference for me, I was critically gun shot many years ago and I praise God and thank Christ for dying for me. Had it not been for Christ, I would not be alive today. Listen closely to the words of this powerful song. I'm alive today because Christ gave me a 2nd chance. Visit a church this Sunday of your choice and feel him move within. God bless you one and all.
Cant believe that Jonathon sang the opening verse with Mark there. Looks like I will have to go back to my other version with Mark singing (although it is slightly out of sinc). Even still the goose pimples are still tingling
As far as this conversation goes, if you research the history of the GVB, you will find that many Southern Gospel singers gained their start under the instruction and talent of Bill Gaither. They all got a chance.
I like David phelps but he is not a southern gospel singer. he is an operatic singer who didn't make it doing that. He doesn't sound southern gospel in the slightest. and now he is doing christian pop and half the songs are unlistenable.
trust me, he could have "made it" in opera if he had the desire for it. how does he "not sound" southern gospel? do you need a pusific voice tone to sing gospel? he is the greatest tenor alive who choose to use his talent for GOD. Get your nose out of the air.
I said I like him. he is very talented. but he is about as southern gospel as pavarotti. as far as the whole "greatest tenor alive but just chooses to use talents just for God" argument, I won't bring up any facts to bring us back to reality. this is too much fun.
since your such an expert on what sounds southern gospel, lets see you do what david phelps can do :) yeah i thought so you can't so until you can don't critize
Did phelps try a career in opera and fail? I'm curious. I'm studying as an opera singer and I've hear a few metropolitan opera tenors live just a few feet away from me and it seems as though David's top notes are just as good.
I confess myself astonished by the pure arrogance you're displaying.
The Southern Gospel community embraced David as one of them. David was a Southern Gospel singer when he sang Southern Gospel music. When he did solo work, it was a more contemporary sound.
By the way, why are we discussing Phelps here? In case you missed it, that's Jonathan Pierce.
Def don't worship him, just think he was a better singer and someone who doesn't get credit cuz of how he screwed up his life. I don't look up to him as a person, just as a talent. and i know he can't sing anymore, but he did help make gaither what he is today. on my videos, videos of pavoratti, groban, you have crazy fans posting "phelps is greatest singer ever" all over the place. sorry if i don't agree.
as far as worshipping people, it is funny how phelps fans can post any comment on any site bashing another singer and saying "phelps destroys this guy" and it gets positive ratings, but say the slightest critique of phelps as a person or singer and immediately gets slammed. look at this video with jonathan pierce, a great singer. stand up for him get negative rating, say phelps kills him and it is a great comment. people flat out worship this guy and ignore any faults.
that is because there are no faults. David is simply the best that ever lived. I have seen him four times and no one can approach his talent. Wes, Jonathan Pierce, shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Mr. Phelps. and Michael English is a washed up drug addict. Listen to Phelps new Nessun Dorma and you will know why he blows Pavoratti away!!. Thank God for David!
i agree David is wonderful and he has a special place in my heart, but Jonathan does have a lovely voice, and the michael english comment was totally not cool. Michael had many issues for a while (as we all do) but he has been washed in the blood and forgiven and he is, once again back on the right path. He is one of the greatest vocalists as well as David and it's not fair (or christian) to hold his problems against him
Funny. thanks for proving my point. sad part is I like phelps, I just am objective. All the people who two years ago said he would never do secular and would use his talents only for God are now the same people who say he is expanding his ministry while he sings unchained melody (which is an awesome version). though look up his nessun dorma vid and at least some of his fans can see the dif between pavoratti and phelps. Phelps best performances are with GVB in my opinion.
@mjwalker1973 You know, if Mike passed the muster of Bill and Gloria to join their team, I'm sure Mike is just a former washed up drug addict washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. I hope this never happens to you, but if you, your spouse, or your child(ren) ever fall from the grace of God for whatever reason, if they aren't welcome at your church, then they are welcomed at ours. Thank God for the saving "power to change lives today" and the song of the redeemed saying so!
@mjwalker1973 Jonathan Pierce can sing too.. God has a plan for him just as David Phelps. I am a great fan of David Phelps, but there is know reason to knock anyone just because you do not think they are better. Remember take the plank out of your eye before you judge another. Michael English made a mistake in his life. I guess you never have????
@mjwalker1973 : At the foot of the cross, we are all equal. It is not good to compare talent. Everyone gives their all and what they give should not be diminished by comparing.them to others.
Jonathan sings with a sincere emotion, anointing of God, and humility that put him at a place of ministry where talent is irrelevant (although he has plenty of it). I stopped buying GVB albums when he left.
No it's not you, bighugephil. If you compare the other version hoover has added of this song Mark Lowry
does a much better job singing Jonathan's part. For me it sounds like Jonathan is 'singing' the words where Mark is 'feeling' the words.- Big difference.
He's good but the version of this song with David Phelps I think shows David's superior talent. However, no matter what the talent if it's a joyful noise made to the Lord with a heart of praise that is what pleases God.
i love this song i don know who would not

Did phelps try a career in opera and fail? I'm curious. I'm studying as an opera singer and I've hear a few metropolitan opera tenors live just a few feet away from me and it seems as though David's top notes are just as good.

I confess myself astonished by the pure arrogance you're displaying.
The Southern Gospel community embraced David as one of them. David was a Southern Gospel singer when he sang Southern Gospel music. When he did solo work, it was a more contemporary sound.
By the way, why are we discussing Phelps here? In case you missed it, that's Jonathan Pierce.

Palmasdr worships Michael English...just check his videos. But for whatever reason, this obsession includes dissing David Phelps...very sad indeed.

Yes he does have the most powerful voice of a tenor i have ever heard. But Danny Funderburk is a close second!

I love Jonathan Pierce. Of course he's no David Phelps--how many out there are? I'd certainly like to know where Jonathan Pierce is today.

Jonathan sings with a sincere emotion, anointing of God, and humility that put him at a place of ministry where talent is irrelevant (although he has plenty of it). I stopped buying GVB albums when he left.

is it me or is that jonathan guy well flat in this song...i think it`s out of his leauge my self.. never mind hey
bighugephil 4 years ago
No it's not you, bighugephil. If you compare the other version hoover has added of this song Mark Lowry
does a much better job singing Jonathan's part. For me it sounds like Jonathan is 'singing' the words where Mark is 'feeling' the words.- Big difference.

He's good but the version of this song with David Phelps I think shows David's superior talent. However, no matter what the talent if it's a joyful noise made to the Lord with a heart of praise that is what pleases God.
