Well, Yuja is certainly trying to plumb the mysteries of this peculiar epic, but she does not have the talent for the dark depths Chopin is calling for here. She is certainly trying hard, and her face is doing quite a bit of that Lang Lang thing, but it is not the face that really needs to do the hard work...
everyone here insults lang lang. in truth hes not a bad pianist! every1 just says he sucks because of popular choice, which came from a few jealous critics...get over it, people, overexaggerated facial expressions doesnt mean horrible playing
18 dislikes? Really? What are these people looking for? I know we all have our favorites, but I can't figure out what there is to dislike about this performance?
@dreaminginenglish perhaps the following is a weak point: there is no clear direction in this rendition. "Locally", bar by bar, it works. On a global level it doesn't work at all: it lacks an unifying view/idea. For this reason I prefer a lot other renditions than Yuja's. Nevertheless I don't think she deserves pushing the "dislike" button. Greetings.
Elegant, idiomatic, absorbing, melancholy -- just as it should be. Her reading of this otherwise complex work will only grow richer and more layered in time. Another remarkable performance from this superb young pianist.
@miker2001 That Graffman was their teacher explains some of it, no wonder Graffman was never considered great. What Lang Lang and she have in common is they are both from the PRC, got signed by the same record co. that will sell lots of CDs in the PRC. But she is a better pianist and looks much better than Lang :-)
@Bret6464 have you heard graffman's recording of the Chopin Ballades? It is mind-blowing. he was one of the greatest pianists in history, also one of Horowitz's favourite students. Unfortunately his right hand went K.O. in the 80s, a bit like Leon Fleisher and , more recently, Micha Dichter; since then he's been doing mostly left-hand repertoire.
@marcohorowitz8 Gilels' Chopin Ballades are unmatched, he alone plays them how I believe Rach would have, as Rach said Gilels was his true disciple. I also love Horowitz's Ballades. Horowitz was hesitant to discuss "students" said he had none, but Perahia was his favorite. Dichter follows Horowitz closely, being a student of R. Lhevinne at Juilliard (when Horowitz was in NYC) My favorite currrent Chopin interpreter is Jung Lin also from Juilliard, and Argerich and Ohllson.
@Bret6464 Would you mind revealing the source of your assertion that SR anointed Gilels as his "true disciple"? . In all the literature at my disposal, much of it in Russian, and just as much from Rachmaninoff's surviving family here and in Russia -- and not least, from one of the most comprehensive books on Russian pianists ever written, "Sovremyenniye Pianisti" by Grigoriev and Platek -- there is no such attribution.
By the way, you are mistaken with regard to Horowitz as one who favored Perahia as a student. Trust me on this, as an inside source. Horowitz couldn't stand Perahia's playing, not in the least. It was all politics, thats all, believe me.
@bagatellissimo voyez vanessa wagner elle joue magnifiquement bien et aussi katia skanavi. en ce moment suis fan de valentina lititsa pas sûr de l'ortho dans la 1 ier sonate de ragmaninov

@Bret6464 and she lets the music speak, rather than the over emoting that the other fellow does.

Formidable!
Even much, much better than Maurizio Pollini.
I'd like her to release Debussy and Bach (quite intriguing to compare her with Glenn Gould, too - two geniuses).
