Mussorgsky's 1872 revision is much preferable to this version. I'm not sure why they insist on trying to revive the 1869 edition when clearly Mussorgsky felt the original monologue was inadequate and thus changed it so dramatically.
It is tempting for a Russian baritone to add Boris to his repertoire. Unfortunately this does not fit : Boris must be sung by basses or bass-baritones, a high baritone like Dima sounds pretty weird here. He does a great job of interpretation though.
@xav71176 Boris was originally meant to be sung by baritones, it later began to be performed by bass-baritones and basses. I think if we bear that in mind we may find this performance just great. Dimitri has such an elegant, majestic voice. Regards
This is like listening to an alternative version of Una furtiva lagrima... interesting, but does it the version expressing what the composer wanted to say? In my opinion, no. Too proclamatory.
Too many words. And yes, this draft version is a curiosity and beautifully performed, but that is what it is. A curiosity.Sorry, but for me all the "purist" and "new wave" things about Boris Godunov are not convincing.
I have nothing against this' it is really good singing.
But this thing of looking for "authentic" Mussorgsky can drive you crazy.
The problem is that people stopped reading. Mussorgsky considered Rimski- Korsakov not just a friend, but also as kind of editor. And yes, the Rimski edition is more to the point.

Well...the costume he wears here is closer to the one Boris Godunov normally wears. At lesat, it's in the same spirit, I find. He hasn't performed Boris on stage yet.
is this aria for a bass or for a baritone
