The irony of this documentary is that today's Russians are desperately trying to salvage the image of Stalin. They desperately try to sanitize the extent of brutality and misery that Soviet Union brought by its own people--all in an effort to try to look honorable, sophisticated, successful and powerful compared to the Western World. Any honest discussion of communist past and of leaders like Stalin are dismissed with great paranoia that the West is trying to shame and humiliate mother Russia.

@mayamodraf You say what you want but Stalin and Lenin both stripped the Russian people of their nationality and history. Because of Communism. The Russians were forced to become Soviets. No country. Just a land with a dictator. At least Hitler was a Nationalist for the Germans. Why do you think Hitler needed the USA to defeat him. Because of the Communist so-called utopia, there was no need to defeat the USSR. Bankruptcy defeated the USSR. The Soviets could then be Russians again.

There are still living memories of what has happened in the Soviet Union during the Stalinist terror. Sure, for you it is a distant and unknown past, so it is easy to claim everything is propaganda. It is very different story for the people who've experienced the terror and the outcome of the darkest part of the human nature themselves.

How in God's name he was ever allowed to rule my country is a mystery. That bastard was not only guilty of crime against humanity but should've been shot a traitors death. By following the footsteps of Great Britain, France and Poland he too signed a treaty with Nazi Germany, except he went a step further of his good will by supplying and training them only to have them attack back. there are dabates of historians whether he lifted the economy or slowed it. It may be true that the annual17% growth in GDP from 1928 - 1941 was his succes or it could achieved at the same pace without 20 millions of victims (purges plus collectivisation made most of it.

Of course factory is controlled by workers, but they have to have boss, and now it matters if boss is or capitalist who care only about his own profit, or is it leader who care about country and it's people.

In my country majority of older people who say Soviet Union was heaven back then were heads of kolkhoz, warehouses, high ranking communist party members and etc. So life was good for those who could use their status as primus inter pares (I love Orwel's Animal Farm for that matter) and "get" (steal) some valuable stuff for themselves. Soviet Union was nothing but big jailhouse full of oppressed people with rotten morality. There weren't soviet society - there were soviet inmates.

@rasheedux Not really, loads of normal everyday people worshipped him and think half the deaths/etc weren't him but "the regime". My grandparents STILL think he was good, nobody realised they were "inmates". Some people in camps genuinely thought it was a mistake

it was better in estonia, czechoslovakia, slovenia and east germany, but in russia was unbeliveably bad.

for example. you had to get a licence to buy a car. it was one of the worst cars ever and costed about 55 x monthly salary of an engineer. you couldnt use steel reinforcements while building your house, because all steel was used for military equipment. at the same time- my neighbour had wheelburrow made out of mig-21 fuel tank. pure incompetence

I know that, also, government housing was readily available to all working citizens. What does it matter if it wasn't made of steel? Houses in the US were always fluctuating in the market, so you might take 30 years to finish paying the mortgage of a house only to find that it has lost 20% of its original value on the market. Now the economy is even worse.

construcion engineers 100rbl, doctors 100rbl , farmers 150-200, tractor drivers 120rbl, women who milked cows 200rbl.

Lada(car which was already broken just after it rolled out of factory) costed about 5500 rbl.

so an doctor had to spend 55x month salary to get that car. now a doctor can buy a ferrari when he spends 55x his salary.

@kalx007 Also, I know you always had the option to attend State Universities for free if you had high enough grades in school. Here, only recently. Also, the "no child left behind policy" which institutes testing for academic capability has only been applied in the east coast. This means most kids have to take an education that has only been heavily funded but not developed. Also, Soviet cars were shit, but Russian cars still are. Everyone probably uses European or Japanese cars over there.

No with democracy there are no leaders needed. You should not just ask, who owns the factory but also who controlls it. If Stalin Controlls than it is not controlled by the workers. But just by one excluding all others. Socialism without direct Democracy is no Socialism at all. However I also would say that russian communists were well-intentioned at the beginning but lost the way because of the fall of revolutions in western europe. So Russia is not fully to blame more the weak west workers.
