It's a non-issue to me. If we're getting all technical then yes, everyone who lives in the continent is American. But the United States use the term "American" because we are the United States of AMERICA! There is no other way to describe a person from the U.S. We could all ourselves USians. I just finished reading through all the comments and what bothers me the most is that people in the U.S. have coined the term “American” to refer to only people of the United States… Anyone on the continent of the Americas is considered American regardless of their nationality or culture.

It's a non-issue to me. If we're getting all technical then yes, everyone who lives in the continent is American. But the United States use the term "American" because we are the United States of AMERICA! There is no other way to describe a person from the U.S. We could all ourselves USians. In spanish people call 'Americans' Estadounidenses, but what is the English translation to it. There isn't.

It is tough being Mexican American. My family is from California. I can't decide whether I am Mexican, Californian or Spanish. It's very difficult to decide. i feel like being Mexican is like being Against The United States which i love. I feel like being American is the same as hating Spanish.

I'm aware that apple pie and chicken noodle soup originated in other parts of the world but they were brought to America and are internationally known as distinctly american symbols. This just shows the New Generation of Americans. I speak fluent english and spanish. Im Dominican and from Nyc,i meet hispanics from all over.... Mexico,PR,Dr,Columbia,Cuba. They all say the same thing, because they were born here they are not as excepted in their parents homeland but they are proud to be American and to have been born in this country. I gave up trying to please people from Mexico a long time ago. I speak Spanish and English fluently, but if I don't have to speak Spanish I wont because English is what I grew up with and the lifestyle of Chicago is all I know. I will consider myself a Chicagoan or American over Mexican American in a minute. I love my city and my people (the Chicagoans) because I relate to them 100%
