This isn't the original production. It's an entirely new production. A totally different take on a great show. It wouldn't kill people to have an OPEN MIND, which is something people need in the creative and performing arts
@aqua1993 Really. Having seen the original four times, I can assure you there is no comparison. What's missing? The Michael Bennett choreography, the brilliant Boris Aronson set, and most importantly, the "Tick Tock" number which is essential to understanding the character of Bobby. The George Furth book, however, is still terrible. Finally, this is a musical about New York City. In this production it could have been set in Sheboygan, Wisconsin...........with tricked out musical instruments.
I was supposed to sing this (as Amy) for my theatre arts program... Haha that was a joke. We cut it. Way to difficult for a bunch of kids to learn in two weeks. It was insane.
@quizzy1970 I can understand that. That is your preference, but do you still understand and admire the work and rehearsal that this woman put into this performance?
@Shipoopi494 The best part is that, I think, they added that for this production- in all of the other ones I've seen, they don't do the scream, but it's such a great addition.
@GiantPetRat I think it distracts too much from the chorus girl's parts- the lyrics of which are absolutely hilarious, but the audience is too distracted by the scream and then by their own laughter to understand them.
@firestar070 Yeah, but can they understand the lyrics? I suppose it depends on the individual viewer, but when I watch this recording with people, it usually takes a couple viewings to understand what Susan's singing.
I think there is only one to describe this: BRILLIANT. Heather Laws is magnificent in one of the most difficult songs in all of the broadway catalog. This makes a G&S patter song look like a Sunday walk in the park. And the tempo is simply breathtaking -- faster than any other version here on youtube.
The great thing about hers along with the speed and articulation is that she moving around and falling on the ground and screaming and running about and STILL keeping her composure to sing the song.
it annoys me when I see random people on YouTube saying what the show should have done or should not have done. There's a reason those people are there and you're not.
I love Amy's screams every time that Soprano sings "Bless This Bride!!! Totally Insane!!!" *Amy Screams* She just makes me laugh so much. I love Amy. Now why doesn't she want to get married to Paul?
I think Paul is adorable! He keeps pulling his upper lip down over his top teeth; probably because some idiot voice teacher told him his lip was coming up when he sang and his teeth showed and this is his way of correcting it. There's actually nothing wrong with that; Pavoratti often showed upper front teeth when he sang.
Saw this revival, sat front row ($25 student rush!), it was amazing! I love this performance as it is at the original tempo - so many times they slow it down (don't blame them). Everyone in the cast was spectacular, especially for playing their own instruments as well. And of course Raul was fantastic.
BREATHE WOMAN!XD I tip my hat to you, ma'm, seriously. And though i agree with abotu Paul's singing and odd mouth shaping, i thought he was hilarious in the play. Such a card.
i have dubbed this song the song from hell, im learning this for a cabaret act to prove to my singing teacher ive got diction, and omg its non stop singing, i congratulate any singer that does it well especially heather lawles!
And, while I like Paul's voice, I don't like the way he shapes his vowels with his mouth. I can't stop staring at his mouth! And that's not a good thing...
It's still FANTASTIC, though. One of my favorite songs from one of my fav shows.
Interesting. In the OBC, Jenny sang the part of the soprano in this song. Was the switch to Susan in the revival made due to the range/vocal tone of the respective singers? Other reason?
Hmm, I'm not entirely sure. Leenya Rideout is a fairly competant soprano herself, as one can see in 'Poor Baby'. Maybe Amy Justman's range was a better fit for the song, or they gave her the part so she had more to do.
I love that she whisper "And don't tell Paul."

Second only to Beth Howland. Such a bear of a song to perform. She sang this as much as Beth did. Sondheim is a very demanding composer.

Thanks for the videos! Any clips of the Company revival are better than none.
PS: You've miscredited the soprano in this song; it's Amy Justman (Susan), not Leenya Rideout (Jenny).

Interesting. In the OBC, Jenny sang the part of the soprano in this song. Was the switch to Susan in the revival made due to the range/vocal tone of the respective singers? Other reason?

blackbelt360 3 years ago
in the script there's a note on this song that the soprano can either be Jenny or Susan, so I'm guessing it's up to the discretion of the director
Jojosyhb 3 years ago
Could it be that the actress playing Jenny needed to play an instrument for this song so Susan had to do the job instead?
peerah 3 years ago
Ah, very true. Why didn't I think of that before? Leenya Rideout is playing the bass in this number, leaing Amy Justman to sing th art.
blackbelt360 3 years ago
Pardon me, '...leaving Amy Justman to sing the part.' My keyboard sticks sometimes.
blackbelt360 3 years ago
@BestArtsMusic In the libretto it says either Jenny or Susan can sing it. I'm assuming the musical director chooses who is more fitting! :)
