The pupil of any animal, including humans, will expand and contract according to how much light is hitting it. Low light = big pupil. Hence why the doctor shines a light in your eyes - to check your pupil response.

They also do it when they feel threatened or want to be threatening. It's a survival instinct to make themselves scarier so other animals will leave them alone. Same deal as bushing their tails and arching their backs.

it has nothing to do with threatening, but everything to do with threatened, or surprised.

rock is actually kinda right. it happens in humans, too, and other animals. the dilation of the pupils is part of the fight or flight response and allows us a sharp and well defined picture of the world in darker surroundings. its controlled via smooth muscle, and is an involuntary preparation for action.

and yes, the cat is pretty cute =P
