I just got my first pair of sticks a 5b pair and the Stick Control book. Very excited about this new path I'm taking and I'll be referring to your videos. However my drumset at the moment is nothing more than a really thick book.
@nuke97 That 'll work. I first started on a straw hat that used to make a crisp hi hat sound and some books of different thicknesses. I took lessons for a year with just a practice pad.Now I'm glad I did because I learned the correct way. As a famous person Chris Gardner, (the real person whom the movie "Persuit of Happyness was based on) once said..."Start where you are". best of luck
Thats very nice, you know, I'm used to use double pedal with the pads , like a double, two on the pedals, two on the pad , and that going around the drum set, I think that's an awesome tip for Heavier drum solos.
@DrummerCruehead how about this. try that starting with the bass drums first. Or throw off the cycle by pushing everything over one hit. .. In other words, bass, snare, snare, bass over and over. I enjoy playing what ever variations on a pattern that are the most difficult, or un natural. Then...when you go back to the easiest way...well that's just all the more secure and solid. happy drumming...
Hi, I think you do a great job teaching (I wish I had a teacher like you)!
I have a question: I allways have problems with my left hand. I can play the paradiddle, but if i try to get faster my left hand allways screws up. Another Problem I have is that my hands are not the acting the same. Every time I try to bring my left hand in the same position as my right hand it feels weird Do you have tips to improve my left hand? thank you :)
@hanswurst107 maybe I can help. My self I do all sorts of things to isolate the weaker parts. For left hand work you could place a practice pad on the low tom. then practice the paradiddle with left hand on the snare, and right hand on the tom. Play it Slower than you think you should. And just practice super relaxing the left hand. Listening for the same tone with each stroke. When it's as relaxed as "falling off a cliff" after a few months, then you can bring in the speed, little by little.
Thanks, this is great! I just bought stick control over the weekend. I had it back when I was in junior high and didn't appreciate how important its lessons were. Now I'm in my thirties and I'm trying to unlearn bad habits and make up for lost time. Very helpful video.
Hey, have you come up with a way of actually practicing the entire book? Do you practice every section (single combinations, rolls, flams, etc) of the book on each practice session or you approach it like a a progressive method? Thanks again.
Sure, I was just using the first three pages of the book "Stick Control" written by George Stone. The first 72 exercises. The book is pretty standard in most music stores that have drum material.
Thank you so much for this. I've had this Stick control book for a while but i have a really hard time trying to find the motivation to use it. Its good to have a instructor guide you through how useful this book is.
Hey this is a great video. I'll be checking your others, hope you have something on grip technique. I'm new and just got the Stick control book. Thanks again! Oh I meant to give you 5 stars, but bumped 2 stars. sorry!
Hey, no problem. Glad you liked it. I"m not worried about the stars. My playing.....yes.....The first three pages in Stick Control are the most important. But I may try to include some more on it, and with some grip info....Scott
Welcome guys. as for the tape on the ride. I've done a lot of recording. sometimes as little more or less tape on a cymbal seemed to match the room for just the sound I was looking for. Still do it sometimes in my music room these days.
Good eye. I honestly did not even notice the tape when I first viewed this last week. I have tape on my snare and toms to dampen the sound, but I've never heard of it on a ride until now.
I've got Stick Control for the Snare Drummer and I don't know how to even start !!
