If I had to choose my favorite closing scene from the literally thousands of films I have seen over the years, this would be the choice. Of course, the scene is meaningless out of context for viewers who have not seen this great film. Perhaps Waylon Jennings was right, if I may paraphrase: ladies really DO love outlaws.
One of the best movies and one of the greatest endings surely.
"Be sensible" the good officer Calloway says. And like so many who have ever chased someone or something that is elusive at best, what can we do but chase it a little more.
I adore this movie. Its one of the best of all time surely.
The most sublime ending...there are no words for it really...and the haunting longing of the zyther. My heart breaks still, for love cannot speak here, but weeps only. But that's what love always does anyway. What pure genius. The finest film ever made. Period.
@led4acs - True. Good men are always foolish when they do right by women who love the bad guys. And this seems to be too many women these days - and apparently back in those days, too. After all, Nice Guys Finish Last.
THKS bobground - excellent job getting it on - so well done - rather than reiterate my comments from hafizagunces' posting , I will say THE THIRD MAN is ART. I was a child during this period and saw this film on a cold December afternoon in 1949 and I remembered it all my life. - that's what ART does for you.
You can see the look on Calloway's face at around 0:50 - it seems to be saying "What a knucklehead!"

This is the part I remember most of the movie. It's unbearably sad.

Superb Film. Shame about the editing of when Holly met Harry in the doorway for the first time. Very shoddy!

All this - and he misses his plane to boot! I pity the fool who asked him when he got back home, "And how'd your trip go?"

My favourite movie ending of all time.
I think only 'Le Doulos' comes close.

One of the best kiss-offs in movie history. Holly Martins was a fool to think he had a chance.

Best ever indeed...

IMHO, this is tied with City Lights for the best cinematic ending ever.
A close second would be Vertigo, Seven Samurai and Taxi Driver :)
