I find petrucci's playing a bit more tasteful in the sense that you dont have to be a fan of his to enjoy it... It depends on how broad a landscape your music can cover...
It doesnt really help that petrucci is as underrated as it gets and michael romeo seems like a forgotten name in todays guitar community, but from my standpoint its pretty even between the two. Their strong points are totally different though, seeing that Romeo is a neoclassical god and petrucci is a monster shredder and melodic rock guitarist in a well known. But they both are more than capable of playing eachothers songs/solos. Its not like comparing lil wayne and Steve Vai.
Michael Romeo is more creative. That´s the most important because Their creations will make you memorable for ever and ever. Not so much his technique. Petrucci's solos are boring in the sense that they have nothing new when compared with other great guitarists (Satriani, Vai, Gilbert, etc). Also JP abused with the alternative picking. And finally the riffs of MR are much more heavy and powerful than JP
@jmrvxpful I've listened to Symphony X (I own 3 of their albums) and I've listened to Dream Theater (which I am honestly a bigger fan of) and I can't help but think that Symphony X's sound not only on the whole, but with Romeo specifically lacks any talent rhythmically or melodically. So, in that respect I think it is fair to say that Petrucci is a better musician and composer. I think Romeo always sounds similar to himself and, in that respect, loses any heavy feeling due to lack of contrast.
@Sirguitarsalot I respect your opinion, but if you had all the albums SX, you should see who makes the music of all songs ... that's MR. Not only the guitar`s solos, but the orchestrations (The Odyssey, On the breath of Poseidon, Egypt ...) Lack of rhythmicity? I think you should listen The accolade I
In my opinion this comparison wouldn't reach anywhere. I bet Michael can't play any of Jonh's solos. On the other hand, John, maybe. could play some solos of Michael, but not with his maestry.
Both are amazing, that we can't deny, but each one has his own technique, that are amazing. If I could play 10% of what they play I'd be a VERY happy person.
Anyway... this comparison is so relevant, and as said before "Just Listen these guys and be glad for having them"
OMG Stupid conversations here,,, you are idiots - you cant say, that he is better ,because greatness is not about technique.....And what about technique? These guys are awesome, you cant say that JP is better than MR, because you dont know, you cant know what they can play, maybe if you are their wife... Just Listen these guys and be glad for having them.
both are superb in terms of technical & accuration, imo John Petrucci has more character and better phrasing + his soloing stuffs sounded more catchy & melodic, michael romeo probably has better techniques but most of his solos are generic techy-shred sounding and repetitive, yes all of his soloing stuffs are difficult, but not memorable in my ears. if i want neo-classics, i'd prefer Jason Becker & Marty Friedman. Exotic & unusal scales FTW. just my opinion no offense
They are both good, in my opinion..... MIACHEL ROMEO IS A GUITAR GOD NO ONE IS MORE SKILLED THAN HIM BEST GUITAR PLAYER IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!!!))7?,)! Gyjvyhgimbh
all people's saying Petrucci and more Petrucci, but I think the virtuosity of Romeo is better, they have a different kind of tecnic, Pertrucci evolves from jazz and Romeo from classic music that's hardest for play.
@TheOdinEye Petrucci doesnt "evolved" from jazz. Both guitarrist has something in common HIS PROGRESSIVE STYLE the only difference is with romeo cause he mixed progressive with neoclassic style. Petrucci is more creative. thats the difference
Classical music is NOT harder to play than jazz. Jazz is far more complicated than classical, with a few exceptions like Stravinski. They both have revolutionized the structure of music itself. what makes these 2 guitarists so amazing as composers is how they defy all typical structures while composing in ways that the music world hasn't seen before. If a gun were placed to my head I would say Petrucci because he is more diverse.
Don't be a moron, U2 isn't a Prog Metal band and makes The Edge irrelevant in this conversation between Petrucci and Romeo... Sheesh... Just plain ignorant...
Neither is better than the other... Both are Guitar Gods... But Petrucci is a better song writer... Dream Theaters superior success is proof of this...
Both are world class musicians who do a lot of the same but also are very different. John relies much more in picking technique and romeo on tapping and pull offs.
well, i think they can play each other songs perfectly, its a matter of taste, although michael is a beast and makes very difficult songs, but petrucci also does that and makes beautiful melodies, something romeo doesnt do that much, cause he plays too fast
A really bad choice of videos! Expecially for Romeo's part! There's no doubt Michael Romeo is absolutelly better and he makes it all so easy and Symphony X are absolutelly better than DT for Romeo's compsitions, a REAL guitar hero kiddie!
@MrRal93 haha symphony x will never compose masterpieces like octavarium, a change of seasons... or Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, no way to compare
@GuitarAndWow The Odyssey, Divine wings of Tragedy, Rediscovery, Communion and the Oracle, Egypt, Candlelight Fantasia. Do I have to continue? We all have different opinions, I personally enjoy Symphony X more than Dream Theater, but I don't go to Dream Theater videos to write derogatoring comments.
ambos tocan excelente pero petrucci le lleva muchas vueltas a michael romeo, romeo usa demasiado el tapping, por lo que le quita puntos, ademas, pusieron las facilitas de petrucci, pongan las de dream theater y veran que tiene mas nivel
Can't fault any of the two as players although Petrucci has a better guitar tone and can pick super fast, Romeo relies on legato and tapping more. Romeo seems to be heavily inspired by Malmsteen. Peace :)
I gotta say I´m a fan of both DT and SX, but my favourite band ever is Romeo´s one, EVERY new song I listen by them gives me the chills, and makes me wanna listen to it at least ten times more that same moment. I gotta admit that Petrucci´s picking is faster and all, but it´s just technique. His playing does have a lot of heart, too, but Romeo´s playing, is insanely deep. Check When All is Lost to see what I mean, or The Odyssey
petrucci WHO???Are you kidding me ..There are so many Guitar Gods..Like George Lynch,Steve Vai,Kee Marcello,Paul Gilbert,Y,Malmsteen,Bill Leverty,Joe Satriani,Michael Romeo,Rob Mercello,and we talk about petroucci???Come On People
Each one is better on his own style: Michael is more "neoclassical" on his solos, while petrucci is normally more rock traditional sounding with of course his own touch. Both of them are great guitarist, Michael did a GREAT job on Lost Paradise, on the other hand Petrucci has an AWESOME career with Dream Theatre with really innovative and fresh ideas and riffs, so overall i think i stick Petrucci :)
@heavyrules6699 I guess your are kidding. Or maybe it's because Romeo's picking is so soft, easy, and musical that you don't even notice it's picking.
I think that John Petrucci is pure feeling, and Michael Romeo is pure mathematics, I can't tell you which is the winner, because I can't judge between technique and feeling. They are better than other guitarists, and I think, that there's no sense to make a competition if they play te same genre, my verdict is: There's no winner. both are good
in this video petrucci is more bluesy. Obviously he has more of of a metal sound in dream theater though. This kinda proves that petrucci can play different genres and make it sound good :) just saying
They are just so different we can´t really compare their techniques or creativity... they`re both incredible but Petrucci`s alternate picking is just SO different to Romeo`s tapping so I wouldn`t compare these 2 genius, there is a point in which al these guitar heroes are on the same level it just depends on your musical taste (Petrucci in my opinion)
@greendagger87 ofc he is..and I'm God...Romeo will never be able to play like petrucci..c'mon im playing sea of lies and inferno easily ( im 13) and I can't and wont be able to play Glasgow kiss or Damage control another 1-2 years ( i practice 5 h a day)
Good guitaring is entirely opinionated. For all those Petrucci haters saying he sucks, seriously, listen to him. He 'sucks'? He wouldn't be where he is now if he sucked. Same for Michael Romeo. They're both epic.
Petrucci al the way..You can't compare his musical knowledge or his creativity...Even if I prefer romeo's music and melodie Petrucci is in whole different level...
My brain's gonna explode from all of Romeo's tapping... Tapping is pretty every once in a while, but gets boring when most of his songs are composed entirely of tapping licks. I think tapping is meant to add flare, but it does nothing when the entire song is tapping lol.
well thats your opionion but i disagree but either way theyre both master guitarist so in a way it doesnt matter whos better and i completely understand classical its just not my favorite thing to hear all the time
poppycock. have you heard iconoclast? michael totally switched it up. same with paradise lost. hell, same with all the albums. he switches it up just as much as petrucci.
@Fluffypopcicle ive heard iconoclast and paradise lost i have everything from symphony x but you have to admit he doesnt change as much as petrucci dont get me wrong romeo is an amazing guitarist in fact hes my third fav next to steve vai as two and petrucci as one but i just have to say petrucci
he doesn't switch it up as much as petrucci, but petrucci's playing lacks color sometimes. he can be bland at times, i never hear michael being bland.
@Fluffypopcicle i have to say both can be bland at times there solos especially but im thinking petrucci has a little more color and six degress is a good way to prove it
no, petrucci's playing in that song is very bland. it's the keyboard playing that adds the color. michael only seems bland if you're not used to classical music. well, same goes for the way dream theater structures their songs, but we're talking single guitar players not entire bands.
Petrucci all the way! He writes pretty much everything in Dream Theater, Great shredder, can improvise like no tmrw, greatest alternate picking guitarist in every kind of rock music, has more emotions than romeo. Fast as hell, when he goes on "world destruction mode" like some say romeo doesnt even stand a chance against him.
ok...romeo is technically awesome with some freat ideas too....but petrucci is sooooooo versatile- fantastic ideas !!! so - both great - but i'd prefer petrucci :P
u cant compare jp with romeo.romeo doesnt have the vesatility that jp have.in solos jp plays solos wiyh feel and technical difficulty sounds melodic bt romeo is concentrated on fast playing.so jp is the best.
@diogotomediogo What the fuck are your qualifications to make that statement? Loomis is in the same class technically and has managed to separate himself from the rest with a distinct style as well as being great at song structures.
@NailgunDeath no qualifications, dear friend. I've listened to the whole nevermore discography (Loomis quited) and his solo album. i've listened to the complete discography of dream theater, symphony x and stratovarius, and even timo's 3 solo albums. and it seems to me clear that Loomis isnt the god people try to make him look. just my opinion. of course he is a great guitarist. i've seen his interviews, he plays 10 hours a day omg :) i just prefer the other 3 i mentioned by a long shot.
@diogotomediogo This is where the real fun begins. Loomis is no longer tethered to Nevermore, so he can now branch out and become a much more diverse musician. Since he seems like a very open-minded and humble fellow, I am confident he'll do just that. He has a hell of a lot of potential, that's for sure.
I guess we'll hear how he's progressed when the sequel to Zero Order Phase is out.
there would be no winner.... they world would be turned 2 ash and all would be left is the shredding guitarsist and thats not good for album sells in the long run
I think Romeo is the master of tapping, but john petrucci uses way more skills in his songs. So I think Petrucci is better, but Romeo learnt by himself so that deserves a lot of respect. And overall, I prefer Symphony X compared to DT.
I also think there´s no comparison, they both have unique styles. There is however one thing that Romeo excels against many musicians and it´s the way he treats fans.
I tell you, I met both Petrucci and Romeo at the airport and the hotel lobby when the came here, and the way Michael says Hi is wayyy to different... More friendly and personal. Nothing compared to some artists that do not usually speak to fans.
I'd say Petrucci. No offense to Romeo, he is a fantastic player, but what I've heard from him it sounds very Neo Classical, which I just can't get into as much as DT.
LOL the guy who made the video is trying so hard to make Romeo win. I really love and admire Michael Romeo, he is amazing but still he is no match for Petrucci.
I find petrucci's playing a bit more tasteful in the sense that you dont have to be a fan of his to enjoy it... It depends on how broad a landscape your music can cover...

What is the name of the first dream theater song?????????
deltaecho147 7 months ago
My brain's gonna explode from all of Romeo's tapping... Tapping is pretty every once in a while, but gets boring when most of his songs are composed entirely of tapping licks. I think tapping is meant to add flare, but it does nothing when the entire song is tapping lol.

The guy that made this video seems to be a romeo fan because these parts of petrucci aren't even close to his best
picklevai16 7 months ago
well thats your opionion but i disagree but either way theyre both master guitarist so in a way it doesnt matter whos better and i completely understand classical its just not my favorite thing to hear all the time
TheMaidenfan555 7 months ago
micheal romeo should write solos for spawn of possession. wonder how it'll sound :D
iamhomo1 7 months ago
They are both musical genius in my opinion.
But I prefer Petrucci by far. Just tastes ... Why all those Guitar Battle video are so popular. oO

petrucci because he changes his sound in almost every dt album does romeo
nah
TheMaidenfan555 7 months ago
@TheMaidenfan555
poppycock. have you heard iconoclast? michael totally switched it up. same with paradise lost. hell, same with all the albums. he switches it up just as much as petrucci.
Fluffypopcicle 7 months ago
@Fluffypopcicle ive heard iconoclast and paradise lost i have everything from symphony x but you have to admit he doesnt change as much as petrucci dont get me wrong romeo is an amazing guitarist in fact hes my third fav next to steve vai as two and petrucci as one but i just have to say petrucci
TheMaidenfan555 7 months ago
@TheMaidenfan555
he doesn't switch it up as much as petrucci, but petrucci's playing lacks color sometimes. he can be bland at times, i never hear michael being bland.
Fluffypopcicle 7 months ago
@Fluffypopcicle i have to say both can be bland at times there solos especially but im thinking petrucci has a little more color and six degress is a good way to prove it
TheMaidenfan555 7 months ago
@TheMaidenfan555
no, petrucci's playing in that song is very bland. it's the keyboard playing that adds the color. michael only seems bland if you're not used to classical music. well, same goes for the way dream theater structures their songs, but we're talking single guitar players not entire bands.
Fluffypopcicle 7 months ago
MICHAEL ROMEO, no doubt possible.

if John didn't get that haircut, I'd say it's a tie. But Romeo does have the hair.

Petrucci all the way! He writes pretty much everything in Dream Theater, Great shredder, can improvise like no tmrw, greatest alternate picking guitarist in every kind of rock music, has more emotions than romeo. Fast as hell, when he goes on "world destruction mode" like some say romeo doesnt even stand a chance against him.

i voted michael romeo on this video once, but i would like to change my vote to john romeo instead. either him or michael petrucci.
Fluffypopcicle 8 months ago
ok...romeo is technically awesome with some freat ideas too....but petrucci is sooooooo versatile- fantastic ideas !!! so - both great - but i'd prefer petrucci :P
Karafliazoproora 8 months ago
michael romeo
darcshadowrenacido 8 months ago
u cant compare jp with romeo.romeo doesnt have the vesatility that jp have.in solos jp plays solos wiyh feel and technical difficulty sounds melodic bt romeo is concentrated on fast playing.so jp is the best.

Jeff Loomis is nothing compared to Petrucci, Michael Romeo or Timo Tolkky!
diogotomediogo 8 months ago
@diogotomediogo What the fuck are your qualifications to make that statement? Loomis is in the same class technically and has managed to separate himself from the rest with a distinct style as well as being great at song structures.
NailgunDeath 8 months ago
@NailgunDeath no qualifications, dear friend. I've listened to the whole nevermore discography (Loomis quited) and his solo album. i've listened to the complete discography of dream theater, symphony x and stratovarius, and even timo's 3 solo albums. and it seems to me clear that Loomis isnt the god people try to make him look. just my opinion. of course he is a great guitarist. i've seen his interviews, he plays 10 hours a day omg :) i just prefer the other 3 i mentioned by a long shot.
diogotomediogo 8 months ago
@diogotomediogo This is where the real fun begins. Loomis is no longer tethered to Nevermore, so he can now branch out and become a much more diverse musician. Since he seems like a very open-minded and humble fellow, I am confident he'll do just that. He has a hell of a lot of potential, that's for sure.
I guess we'll hear how he's progressed when the sequel to Zero Order Phase is out.
TheBadSpoon 8 months ago
@TheBadSpoon yup, ill be sure to listen to that album many times when it comes out :)
diogotomediogo 8 months ago
there would be no winner.... they world would be turned 2 ash and all would be left is the shredding guitarsist and thats not good for album sells in the long run

It's like Coke Vs Pepsi. It's completely up to personal preference.
ih8makinusernames 8 months ago
I think Romeo is the master of tapping, but john petrucci uses way more skills in his songs. So I think Petrucci is better, but Romeo learnt by himself so that deserves a lot of respect. And overall, I prefer Symphony X compared to DT.
InfinityDz 8 months ago
I also think there´s no comparison, they both have unique styles. There is however one thing that Romeo excels against many musicians and it´s the way he treats fans.
I tell you, I met both Petrucci and Romeo at the airport and the hotel lobby when the came here, and the way Michael says Hi is wayyy to different... More friendly and personal. Nothing compared to some artists that do not usually speak to fans.

Ever notice how all the amazing guitarists are Italian?
Vai, Petrucci, Zappa, Satriani, Romeo, Dimeola
Even my guitarist is Italian!
ZachValkyrie 8 months ago
Simply put. Jhon petrucci is more bluesy and michael is more classical there both fucking awesome. How can you compare creaiviety?

PETRUCCI! PETRUCCI! WE WANT PETRUCCI!
TheWildestGuitarist 8 months ago 25
I'd say Petrucci. No offense to Romeo, he is a fantastic player, but what I've heard from him it sounds very Neo Classical, which I just can't get into as much as DT.
TheMetalhead541 8 months ago
In my opinion, petrucci is an awesome guitar player, but I prefer Romeo, because of his style an kind of solos. Romeo is heavier than petrucci
leonhart3heartilly 8 months ago
LOL the guy who made the video is trying so hard to make Romeo win. I really love and admire Michael Romeo, he is amazing but still he is no match for Petrucci.
MaximumPayne12 8 months ago
@MaximumPayne12 actually no, most of Romeo's songs are fast to begin with. There are not many slow and easy songs that he plays.
