Not that I know of... It's a race circuit just north of Montreal Quebec, where the old Mirabel airport used to be. Now it's mostly cargo flying out of there...
That chuff chuff sound when he's off the throttle is the BOV. It releases the excess pressure that builds up in the piping from the still spinning turbo. The sound varies Wildly from manufacturer to manufacturer, some release in a single puff, others try to smooth out the release in stages, hence the multiple sounds. It can be an indication that you are running too soft a spring in your BOV for the level of boost. The mechanic could mean he only uses the standard BOV. Antilag is bad 4 turbos!
@saabgt3 Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking either a GTX-35R as you propose or a Borg-Warner. I was wondering if a GTX-35R top mount would be better than my GT-30R front mount... It would certainly have more response...
Help! For those who know more about subies than I, what turbo would you best recommend as an upgrade to a GT-30R? I was thinking GTX-30R but I was told the difference is not huge. I was thinking GTX-35R but I don't want more lag than I have now. I looked at the Borg Warner broducts but it seemed complicated with my current piping. I am at 3 inches thru but was told by Cosworth that 3.5 inches is the ideal size. 4 inches is overkill. If I change to 3.5, what is best turbo please!?
When you get into big turbo's there is not much of a choice but to have lag. It can be reduced by going twin scroll or similar. If it is an Sti they have a well basically V tech for the bottom end. If everything is tuned correctly you can get an impressive spool up out of a massive turbo
To all who don't know: that is compressor surge! When the throttle is closed the boost stacks up in front of the throttle body, then surges back to the turbo, causing turbulence.
I realize it sounds like a blow off valve, but the mechanic who put the car together said it wasn't and that he doesn't put blow off valves on Cosworth engines. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I was told...
@tonygirardin all turbos have either a dump valve or a recirculating valve and having owned one of these a few years ago I can confirm they definitely have dump valves and are alot of fun :)
@tonygirardin it's not a blow off valve you are hearing the turbo spooling and then when he let's off the gas y ou are hearing what is called "compressor surge". it is actually bad for turbos because the sound is from the pressure forcing the turbo to spin backwards but the exhuast is still pushing it forward. it will usually kill the bearing a lot faster. that's why they usually have blow off valves. not sure why anyone would brag about not using them? it's considered incorrect...
Diesel trucks make the same sound it is basically the compresses cutting through the compressed air. The sound comes from the intake. Make sense? I loved that sound out of my 7.3L powerstroke. I miss that truck.
@tonygirardin a blow off valve bleeds excess air off the compressor side of the turbo system so it doesn't get backed up and damage the turbo, and a wastegate lets excess exhaust gases bypass the turbo side of your turbo setup
@mike94716 or i have a evo 6 with no blow off or waste gate it some how blows thro my air filter think its a standard thing for the evo its not loud but its got the noise, not sure about subs tho maybe wrong just an idea ps my evo is stock without any mods except evo 9 interior thro out im no mechanic :)
If you have the original engine, I would aim for 380 hp, not more. You can have a lot of fun with that. Keep the intercooler top mount. You need to get headers with 3 inch pipe all the way. And you need to get your car programmed. That will take you to about 350. You can also get of Blow Out Valve and eventually a slightly bigger turbo that will take you to 380 while keeping the car reliable. If you push over 400, think that you might need an engine swap :-)
Great engine but suspension and diff need an upgrade. Looks like car is lowered so roll center is not at the correct position so tune suspension with roll center adjuster and diffs.
Heel-toe downshifting would significantly help your time with some of those tight corners. Otherwise, great subie. Wish I had the money to afford a setup like that.

I'd say the gtx35r, it's a sick turbo. anti lag on a toggle switch to reduce lag?

if its turboed you have to put either a blow off valve or a flutter valve

@123456789bigbear no such thing as a flutter valve. the flutter sound is compressor surge

@tonygirardin probably a recirculation valve, instead of blowing off the excess air into the atmosphere it recirculates it back into the intake.
