i do this too, only i have to call it toe-toe, since my steering wheel is too big and i cant lift it lolz, time for a smaller one :P basicly i brake with my left side of my shoe and gas with the right side of my shoe. its so dumb im used to it, now when i dont want to "toe-toe" it feels like im stomping instead of braking
It is necessary. If you don't do it then you lock your wheel. If you downshift normally then the wheels have to rev up the motor. In normal conditions that is not a problem but when you are driving on the edge of grip it is. So that it is only used by racing drivers. When you have semi automatic gearbox the the electronics will do it for you. They call it the blipper. It will spool up the engine a bit between gears (downshifts).
@ALT326 Yes, but that is regarding the heel and toe, not the double declutch. Double declutching, that is, clutch, put in neutral, declutch, accel, clutch, put in lower gear, and declutch, is only necessary on cars without sync meshes.
i recently watched some videos of the "rally master" (forgot his name already) and his foot work was pretty clear to me that his was double clutching while up shifting as well.. i really cant imagine its worth the extra 1/2 second to take the time to do that over a little wear on the syncros. the video was filmed in the late 80's so the tranny certainly had them.. im not saying hes wrong, im just curious as to why
because the tranny engages with the engine... therefore the wheels/speed and RPM are matched even better and its less stress on the clutch and tranny... so its a good strategy when u dont wanna lose momentum
if you are in 5th gear and want to downshift to second gear. when you heel and toe every downshift do you have to let the clutch out every time after you downshift? or can you just hold it in until you get to second gear then let the clutch out? thanks a lot
you let the clutch out every time so you get a little bit of engine braking. if youre holding the clutch in from 5th to 2nd, theres no need to rev for fourth and third lol
@N41MUN94 For normally heel-toe hold the clutch until finish downshift. But in this clip Gary Sheehan do double clutching heel-toe. In real car (wtith H shift SYNCHROMESH GEARS) it's hard to downshift 5th to 2nd because it's exceed synchro limit ,so you can't engage to 2nd. Double clutching is only way to do that. Depress clutch at first shift lever from 5th to N and release clutch. Then blip gas to match engine-wheel speed. Depress clutch again and shift N to 2nd and then release clutch.
No, he is single clutch downshifting too. He is pushing in the clutch once. Heel toe and double clutching are different. They are different ways of accomplishing the same goal.
i swear several times it looked like he depressed the clutch took it out of gear, let out the clutch and depressed it again put it in gear and then let out the clutch, oh well whatever
He is using heel-toe AND he is double-clutching when he is down-shifting. Watch his left foot when he blips the throttle, because he does it throughout the video.
the car has an upgraded drivetrain, don't expect you bone stock car to be able to do the same thing.

Yeah I can't do it that fast, going from what was it 4th, to 3rd and to 2nd? At least I'm not that consistent.

is it necessary to double clutch while down shifting? i thought that was only for trannys without syncros?
ultimateracer28 1 year ago
@ultimateracer28
necessary... no. But it does help a lot when skipping gears (like 4th to 2nd). Gives smoother shifts and saves your syncros.

@Strakos0 for all those people that watch the fast and the furious too many times.
Granny shiftin' not double clutchin' like you should... you're lucky you didn't blow the welds on the intake!

do they have power brakes of those becuase hes putting alot of pressure on the brakes it looks like does anyone know?
kiefer1234566767 2 years ago
Its a race car, it doesn't have power anything.
JamesPante 2 years ago
not sure what the actual brakes are.
fyi, when racing, every second decelerating is time waisted.
thus the reason why nearly all racers wait as late as possible then brake as hard as possible without locking it up,
hope that helps!

it is double clutching. You cant go around a roadcourse and not Double clutch. . .
n421tt 3 years ago
nah he's definitely double clutching. the one sequence where he does 3 downshifts he definitely disengaged and engaged the clutch 6 times.
chazly0413 3 years ago

PinkPanther094 2 years ago
he is using clutches for slowing down the car! It's probably faster this way rather than down shifting from say 5th gear to 2nd gear in one motion.
