Gayla Peevey recorded the song in the early 1950s when she was a child star in Oklahoma City. It inspired the OkC school kids to give up their candy money and contribute to the fund to buy Gayla a hippo, which she promptly donated to the OkC zoo. I was one of those kids. The hippo's name was Matilda. For some ungodly reason, in 1998 the OkC zoo betrayed Gayla and sold the Matilda to the Disney Animal World in Florida, and she died on the way, all crated up in a boxcar.
