Saw U2 in Moncton, New Brunswick on July 30, 2011. (Last date on their 360 tour) When the opening guitar riffs of this song started, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Just an overwhelming experience and everyone who loves this band should try to attend at least one U2 concert in their lifetime. BTW, outdoor venues can't be beat when the weather cooperates.
#1 group of the CENTURY.. and centuries to come.. they are energy extreme from their lyrics and sound to performance. Most importantly they have supported so many great causes. I can't imagine a world without their music!
Fell in love with U2 in 1983 with the song "New Year's Day".They just keep getting better with time.Truely one of the Worlds supergroups.Edge's guitar sound is the backbone of what makes U2 great. Thanks for the upload. This video has good sound quality.
@LadyOlivia35 The garden referred to is the olive garden that Jesus was praying in when Judas comes and kisses him, identifying him to the Roman soldiers who took him away
Ass is absolutely kicked in this video. People talk about Jay-Z...Gaga...Kanye...whatever. THEY CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE!!! It isn't about being cool; It isn't about some lame video. it's about hitting a nerve. Leaving a mark. U2 does that. Especially this song. They bring out the best in people. And that's why they are THE BEST.
This song is unreal it's so good. i loved it, then found out about how the last verse is Judas' suicide, and it took on a whole new level of greatness! Achtung Baby shows U2 at a peak that no band has ever reached the heights of before, and never will again.
Just my opinion! I'm sure many of you beg to differ
@AchtungBaby1874 I don't get how the Garden of Eden lyric has anything to do with Judas. That's more about Adam and Eve. Besides, I think people are WAY too hard on Judas. Think about it---he was possessed, felt such remorse that he killed himself---what more do you want from him? God should FORGIVE him and move on.
I started liking u2 like when i was 13 too :) now im 15 and i like them even more since i saw them i gothenburg im going to see them in helsinki next year too :)
Soren Kierkegaard would have tipped his hat to this performance. He would then say: "my boys, your effort to try and get the individual to wake up, feel his existence, and take the leap of faith in fear and trembling is as much as any one can do and nothing more" - that btw to all u2 fans is a huge compliment
perhaps, but then, perhaps I think if you'd read the genius of Copenhagen you might "either" be better suited to develop your wit "or" give my comment a very proper thumbs up, - always a most important sign of my very important worldly significance. however, since that too is only a thought possibility; perhaps I should be quiet here as well? After all, I would hate to think my methane releasing mouth is contributing to the pseudo climate crisis. :)
develop my wit? tell me, are you over twelve years of age? and yes, you said it yourself, your mouth releases methane - what an idiot! why not develop your wit, young freind? :)
Actually guys, this song was written for the Wim Wenders Film "Until the End of the World" in 1991 that stared Solveig Dommartin and William Hurt. The lyrics actually follow events in the film.
If you watch the DVD notes, the director says Bono told him it was about Judas. You still may be right., however. Bono's lyrics work on different levels and come from different sources.
Many believe Judas was greedy (the treasurer of the Apostles) and thought he could FORCE Christ to prove himself. He thought by being an Apostle it would bring some form of POWER! He (Finance Man) was sick of being poor. He thought he could FORCE Christ to be the "New King". Christ would have to use his powers to fight for his life. Judas had watched this man multiply bread and fish, calm storms, and raise the dead. Judas thought Christ wouldn't go without a fight. He wanted a position of power
It is about the relationship between Christ and Judas, seen through the eye's of Judas. Bono has started the song many time's yelling "Judas come OUT!" (Christ was commanding an evil spirit out! "Haven't seen you in quite a while." Many Christian's believe Judas cannot see Jesus until the "The End of the World". "I was in the GARDEN (Gethsemane) playing the tart." Judas was acting like he loved Jesus. "I kissed your lips and broke your heart" This was not a sexual kiss. It's a form of greeting.
just cuz the song is about jesus can't mean it's not "pure sex"
"Pure sex "is kinda an adjective in the way that it describes the mood of the sound.
As a musician and songwriter I see music in terms of moods and atmospheres, much like the edge with his soundscapes. I'm sure It's way different with vocalists/poets or just people that pay more attention to lyrics over melody.
None the less the lyrics are great, and I always like the metaphors U2 portray.
The song talks about Jesus, last supper, as the story says that a Bono for parents Iris Rankin Hewson was a Protestant, from there his influence for peace and Christian. Other songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday also have Christian influences
He uses a Boss OD-2 with the turbo on, delay coming from either the Korg SDD-3000 or the TC 2290, and probably some auto wah (or it is a real wah which is controlled by his guitar technician), and for the end part he uses a Sobbat DB-1 Distortion
at this tour, and at this song, Edge is begining to use the Boss PW-2, Power Driver, only for this song, as an overdrive. OD-2 was used in Zoo TV and Popmart Tour. Sobbat is used like a booster, on the solo part.
I am absolutely sure that the Boss OD-2 was used on this song for the Elevation Tour. He used the Boss PW-2 on the vertigo tour though. The OD-2 was only used for this song on the elevation tour.
The Sobbat he only uses on the outro. If you compare the solo with the outro you can hear a enourmous difference. He never use it as a booster lol. He probably used his Boss FA-1 boost on the solo. And about the wah.. listen to the intro. Sounds kinda like a wah.

I watched they sold there souls for rock and roll on this same site and bono did the Horn thing there to. What profits a man to gain the houl world if he looses his soul. King saul was used by Demons for years and turned from his ways after meeting Jesus Christ. Although there is no need to respond; perhaps, just perhaps; the betrayer's issues lie at the heart of all "self" battles. To betray or not to betray. Thus the Existential Conflict.
