No space game has ever come close to matching the scope and sheer epic size of this. Right from the minute the very first chords of the main theme rang out on my Soundblaster 16 sound card, I knew I was looking at something simply huge.
There aren't words, there really aren't to describe how awe inspiring this game was, and still is. A rare game, in a rare series of games (all three were brilliant), that will stand the test of time and will go down in history as a true classic!
I liked how real that game universe was. Real stars , real newtonian physics. It could have been the coolest game ever if it wasn't that buggy. What a pity!
Cause they "moved on", Creators get bored of the same thing even though we dont (:D). Like after this game Chris Sawyer and David Braben went to make the eaqually fenomenal series called Roller Coaster Tycoon, I doubt a 4th will be made.
I disagree. Many of them control much more smoothly, more realistically, look better, have superior music, have superior writing, and have more engaging combat situations, though rarely all at the same time. By comparison, Elite feels stiff, slow, awkward and even a little confusing. That said, as far as technicalities go, Elite kick's everyone's ass simply because of what it was able to do with the technology at the time. Imagine what newer technology could do with such ingenuity!
@PlankKydo There has been no space game like the Elite's. Freelancer was a joke, and the X-Series is a building simulator more than an all arounder like the Elite games.
@PlankKydo but none of them feel like being in space, more like a small square box with a bitmap planet in the background and a stupid nebula wallpaper. The Elite series is all about scope and freedom. With huge 3D worlds that you can land on seamlessly. And newtonian physics :-)
What's good about a spacegame that looks nice with smooth controls in a box shaped arcade environment? Doesn't feel like space at all. Elite FTW! BTW, without wanting to hijack this vid, check out Pioneer FFE remake.
Anybody willing to hack the First Encounters OpenGL version enough to recreate the First Encounters Intro. I know this is more memorable, but anyway, who played Frontier after First Encounters?
subdiviision is a technique where you add detail to surfaces by subdividing the polygons that compose them, optionally altering the positions of the new vertexes. You can see this claerly in the video as the ship approaches the red planet.
This is prohibitive in current 3D hardware because it means sending too much data every frame over the bus.
Next generation cards will be able to perform subdivision, so the info won't be sent over the bus and thus will be really fast.
it's a really good game but it still looks like crap, they should rasie the budget on the next release and give us something nicer to look at

For all their faults, no space game has beaten the PC Elite games from Elite Plus to Frontier First Encounters!

The Frontier theme was always more memorable to me, but this is still undoubtedly an awesome intro.

and finally 15 years later, we're getting hardware subdivision.
Cmon Frontier, you know this stuff!
