She had a very big career as a kid but her family somehow managed to give her a totally normal childhood. As she said once, her friends then were still her friends in her later years. She had a long, long, long career as a singer, an actress, a comedienne and she played the top night spots all across the country from the start. She was never a second-tier act. As a person she was totally down to the earth and totally practical. Her T.V. career was the cherry on the cake.
yes amazing voice.. I am looking at this clip because i wanted to hear her sing "I wanna be around" which she sang on the Dick Van Dyke show. I enjoyed her singing it more than any other recording of it...Can't find it though.
@jlive111 We both have the same wish, to hear Rose Marie sing "I wanna be around." It doesn't seem to be available, but at least "Rain or Shine" is, and she did another great job singing that song.
Man could Rose Marie sing. I never had an opportunity to hear her as a child star, though. Shirley Temple can't even touch her. Here's to Rose Marie - you're the best.
I think this clip is from International Hotel with WC Fields. A funny movie. I think there is also a clip in this movie of Cab Calloway singing "reefer Man" with his band.
I guess that jazz rasp that she does is quite difficult to do correctly, for someone so young singing with such a voice, I imagine it might be tough on the vocal chords...?
She was never on the Little Rascals. She was a headliner in Vaudeville as Baby Rose Marie. She retired her career at the age of 12. She picked it back up to star in Top Banana and go on to adult fame as Sally Rogers on the Dick Van Dyke show. One of the greats of Vaudeville schooling. They don't make stars like that anymore!
I think she could still have made a career when she was older if she wanted to, the tragic Judy Garland was on stage after she finished with the films.
yea you're right. But she also had a great knack for comedy thats why her and moray and dick did so good on the van dyke show! Carl Reiner was really smart man when it came to seeing the talent hidden within people.
"Hidden" talent? You've got to be kidding. Rose Marie had a stellar career on stage, radio, film and TV as an adult long before Dick Van Dyke ever came around. She was starring in a TV sitcom when approached to do the Van Dyke show. She sure didn't need Carl Reiner to 'discover' her.
Yes, Baby Rose Marie an incredibly talented youngsters who honed her talents on the vaudeville stages of yesteryear. Rose Marie, like Frances Gumm (later known as Judy Garland), earned their fame the old fashioned way - one audience at a time. These were the original American Idols.
Thanks for posting this. I had never known she was Baby Rose Marie before she was just Rose Marie. Does anyone know if she was ever on the Little Rascals / Our Gang series for an episode? There was a "little rich girl" in one episode where she was lonely in her big house playing with a pet monkey. (No kidding!) The girl reminds me of Baby Rose Marie. Was that her? What a voice!
(I really enjoyed watching her in the Dick Van Dyke Show...where she still sang in this same style. ^_~ I never knew about the "Baby Rose Marie" part of her career either until last weekend when Turner Classic Movies happened to show an old music show that had her in it. ^_^ Cute! ^_^ [I guess I've been a fan of "Baby Rose Marie" for many years without realizing it. ^_~ I've liked her adult self for quite some time! ^_^])
My guess is it was belting songs this way that damaged her vocal chords. It happens to lots of singers who don't follow certain techniques required to protect their vocal chords. Same thing happened to Lucille Ball, who did major damage to her voice singing in Wildcat & Mame, as well as after years constantly projecting an unnaturally high speaking voice as Lucy Ricardo. And smoking didn't help. Not sure whether Rose Marie ever smoked, but the belting may have been enough to do the deed.

I heard that singing this way as a child without professional voice training was why her voice was so rough as an adult

"My Bluebird's Singing the Blues"
Leo Robin and Ralph Rainger, 1933 (3 of 4)
I was a Dumb One, Love was Blind
Or maybe I should Blame it On the Moon
A Certain Someone Changed His Mind
Now My Bluebird Changed His Tune
And Now my Blue Skies Seem to Be Gray
I Packed Away My Dancing Shoes
Because My Big Romance Was a Song & Dance
And My Bluebird's Singing the Blues
