  • I just finished The Fault in our Stars about 10 minutes ago, and all I can say is that is honestly, the most compelling, touching, motivating and simply amazing books I have ever read. I absolutely loved it. John Green, you are an incredible writer.

  • Wow I can't believe your kind of in the book. I think it's my favourite book ever. It's not my usual read but I loved it all the same.

  • I read this book on my four hour bus ride to Indianapolis for my choir... and then on the way back. I had the worst headache of my life, because while I was reading, lights were flashing over the page and the bumps in the road caused it to bounce around in my hands. I COULD NOT STOP READING. Several times, I had to close the book, with my thumb keeping my page, press my forehead against the cover, and cry. Definitely one of my favorite books now.

  • Cool review :) I did a video in which I basically say: 'The Fault In Our Stars' is really, really good. Buy it and read it, haha! What more is there to say, it's so fantastically good. There are no words.

  • waar woon je? i live in the hague, and i'd love for him to make a movie of TFiOS! then he'll come to Amsterdam and i can maybe even be an extra! wat gaat er in maart gebeuren? en ben je half amerikaans? i wel. leuke recencie!

  • Oh why does all the fun stuff happen in the Netherlands, I live in Belgium and i'm 14 yrs old so 1. I can't go to Amsterdam alone and stuff and 2. A train ticket to Amsterdam costs about 150 euro's and that is, for me at least, quite a lot

  • The Fault in Our Stars is probably one of the most amazing pieces of literature I've ever read. I say that because I have seen people go through the horribly long journey of cancer and it is all true. It is all realistic and the one thing I really love about it is that the ending does have a resolution but it is not that happy. I can picture my brother as Augustus and I can finally feel what he is going through. If anyone wants to read a new book I tell them The Fault In Our Stars.

  • I literally bought this the moment I finished this video.

  • I just finished the book and it was awesome. I think it is my favorite John Green book to date. It was jsut awesome!

  • since i read the book, its effected me so badly like it hit me really hard. its as if i pictured myself as hazel...

  • i like how patrick doesnt have balls...

  • hoi Sanne,

  • This is the first book that I've recomended to my friends that they are actually reading! Its so AWESOME!!!! Love the book and they all do to!

  • Great video (as always)! I made a review over on my channel - any feedback would be appreciated :)

  • In the beginning I too heard John's voice while reading, but as the story went on his voice faded away and the characters developed their own unique personalities, which I really enjoyed.

  • YOWZA. Never, ever, do a vid. without your red lipstick.

  • I literally just finished the book, which had completely taken over my thoughts for about a week. It was fantastic, and lovely, and heartbreaking, and real, and too many other things.

  • my night tonight:

    cried

    finished TFIOS

    wrote a review on goodreads

    watched this

can't stop thinking of how awesome John Green is

    DFTBA

  • Did the book make you weep? My life ended just when the book did.

  • @effervescentspirit I know rightttt made me cry so. much.

  • @lilyenc It was so so so worth it though.

  • I absolutely loved the book! Looking forward to the unboxing video :D

  • Oh, God, I was not pronouncing Lidewij's name properly AT ALL xD

  • Great review and you look lovely in this vid

  • I didnt notice a Dutch accent until she said she was dutch....

    >:( this is annoying

The only way that I can think of how this has eluded me is if you have a really strong education in English and plenty of foreign practice...

    no one eludes me...

  • Please forgive my ignorance about the Dutch and the Netherlands, but how is it, almost every dutch person I've ever met speaks such flawless English?

  • @SincerePraise Dutch accents usually aren't that strong when changing to English... and compulsory lessons...

  • it's 3:03am in NYC and I just finished reading the fault in our stars(mostly in one sitting) and the first thing i did afterwards was first wonder if the ending was good(i have this thing about endings needing to be the best part of a book), then hop on my computer and watch this video. not to sound self-important, but I hope this means something to you. good night.

  • it was the most beautiful book i have read in a long while. very creative, it made my love john even more! (i didnt think that was possible)

  • stupid amazon doesn't ship to canada fast another

  • I just finished reading it. Wow it was good. My first John Green book that I've read and it's just awesome!

  • I loved the book. Though I recommend that it not be read in public. You get a lot of strange looks when you try to choke back tears and laughter at the same time.

  • I just finished and am attempting to handle the emotion. I loved the realness of the book. It was definitely my favorite John Green book, and at the moment I can't even entirely wrap my mind around why. But Augustus is one of my favorite characters of any novel, that I know for sure.

  • I heard someone say that the book makes you feel all the emotions at once. I laughed at them, until I read the book. John Green did it again.

  • @booksandquills If, in March, John is coming to Amsterdam for the release of "Een weeffout in onze sterren" I think I'm gonna freak out.

  • How were you able to read it in December?

  • Also, it totally made me want to jump on a plane to Amsterdam :-)

  • As you said, SO much to say about the book, don't even no where to start. I cried, I laughed, I loved it!

  • I read it through in one go and I still haven't really processed all of it. Once again, John succeeds in expressing my thoughts of there being Something More perfectly through use of Hazel's father. I'm not sure if posting a quote is a spoiler, so I'll refrain from doing so just in case. I can't really articulate all the ways in which I love this book. It is just so achingly beautiful. I loved with the characters, I laughed with them, I cried with them. It was...lsjdlasfjlaw I can't even

  • @hpfanatic30 Like, I get done and John gets me thinking about what it means to be a human, just like he did with Looking for Alaska.

  • SO GOOD!!! I cried a lot in both happy and sad ways

  • OMG, I'm so glad not the only one that kept HEARING John while reading!

  • I've been dying to read it! My preordered copy arrived Friday, but alas, it arrived at my parents house three hours away. Lucky for me, my friend is coming to visit tomorrow and he promised to bring it to me. I can't wait!

  • I just read this book last night and I already want to reread it :D

  • I just got this at Target! I almost ran and at first,I didn't see it,THEN I TURNED AROUND AND THERE THEY WeRE!! There were only 2 copies left ands one was signed in green,my favorite color!!!I did a nerdfighter happy dance right in the middle of the store!People looked at me funny, but I did NOT CARE!!!!!!!!!!

  • When I read Lidewij Vliegenthart's name I immediately thought "wait... is that a combination of Sanne and Lidwij's names?!" - that's so cool!

  • Also, Sanne you lucky duck, having your name in a character. :D

  • This is my favorite John Green book so far. Sanne's review was spot on, but I will say however, that while I loved Hazel and Augustus (and Isaac), I found their style of speech a little off putting. No 16/17-year old would talk like that no matter how philosophically or metaphorically inclined they are. But without that odd manner of speech, they would be completely different people, so I'm not really complaining. Also, the idea that John Green even knows what Forever 21 is, that is hilarious.

  • @aiwendiltpd well the characters havent been around regular teens for a long while as well.Plus Hazel has had to grow up a little faster than most teens.

  • This is my favourite book of John's and It was a surprise to me because I don't usually finish books like this. I really thought about dropping it at page 261 but I'm glad I carried on because It's wonderful. Usually when I read his books I prefer the sidekicks to the main characters but in this book all the characters were perfect.

  • I'm simply IN LOVE with the book, I'm about 2/3 done and the only reason I stopped was because of school. The story just weaves so many great things together and there are simply no words to really describe the awesomeness of the book. I agree it's original writing and it IS really fresh. Plus, it reallllly pulls emotions, I laughed hysterically, then was at the point of tears and just ah! So good!

  • omg please I THINK WE ALL WANT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT TOO. At least I do. Ah I hope after some time passes and more people have read TFIOS, you could make another review in-depth and we can just all have a conversation about this fantastic novel! :) PS. I wish I could have pronounced that name not as shamefully, I was right there with Hazel :/

  • done in four hours! I laughed and cried and loved it<3

  • what are nerdfighters? i've heard almost everyone mention them but i'm not really sure what they are. :(

  • @SuperAnnabanana2013 Nerdfighters are a community started by the vlogbrothers channel and are made of awesome instead of just flesh and bones. :D DFTBA means Don't Forget To Be Awesome

  • @SuperAnnabanana2013 Basically, if you wanna be a nerdfighter, you can be! John and Hank have their channel and the nerdfighter community follows it. :) Search for the How to Be A Nerdfighter video

  • I just finished the book. So many feelings, I loved it very much :) Great review

  • I have finished it this afternoon and came back here to watch your review. l loved it. I've already seen at twitter that there is a charakter with your and Lidewij's name, so it wasn't a real surprise for me, but it still was kind of unreal to read your names there :D. Mmmh, Germany isn't that far away from the Netherlands and i have holidays in march ^^

  • WUT. Lidewij Vliegenthart is now my favourite character.

  • Haha, nederlandse namen/woorden klinken zo raar tussen al het engelse gepraat ^^

  • I'm not quite finished yet with TFiOS but it is great so far. When I got to your name in it I was like "whoa" haha. Great review Sanne!

  • It made me ache in that good type of way.

  • He named a character after you guys? That's so awesome!

  • How I pronounce Vliegenthart: Poorly. :)

Thanks for the lovely review. -John

  • @vlogbrothers BWFNL-girls mentioned in the book I know of so far: 3, and my copy still has to reach me! :D

  • @JustCallMeBen has Jonneke read it yet? :D

  • @Lidespam She has had her copy for a few days now, but I have no clue if she started reading yet... Also: I'm getting mine tonight! :D (ordered it through jonjons family in da states ^^)

  • Was a really good read. First book I had read since The Great Gatsby. Kinda sad that it had to end but oh well.

  • That's so awesome that he used your's and Lidewij's names! I remember meeting you two at LeakyCon when Lidewij came over to me and started dancing and soon, a great dance party in Hogsmeade began.

I can now say that I danced with two girls in a John Green novel. Said novel is fantastic and beautiful.

  • I would never guess you were Dutch. Your accent sounds quite American. I subscribed to your channel.

  • Why do you have an American accent? Did you grow up in America with Dutch parents and then move back? My relatives are Dutch and their accents are a bit American, so is it just that you speak amazing English?

  • I LOVE your accent!

  • if she did that thing with the plane and the mice when she was thirteen she could't have been diagnosed at fourteen

  • My goodness TFIOS is fantastic. It's not just the story and the characters that make it so but the writing which is so fantastically brilliant and is definitely John's best yet. It was everything I expected and wanted it to be and so much more.

  • Question - Did you cry at it? I am so scared about finishing it, I have become so attached to Hazel, Augustus and even Isaac!

  • I think I would disagree with you regarding the balanced and realistic diologue. There were just points when I thought it was far too elevated for sixteen year olds...I've personally never met such a verbally articulate teenager as Hazel is made out to be. Though I suppose I shouldn't judge, maybe I just haven't met the right sort teenagers, haha.

  • I lived in Amsterdam for three years (moved away in 2010), and it's one of my favorite places in the world. I can't wait to revisit it through the book (my copy was mailed to my mother's house and I won't get it until Saturday ): )

  • My guess is that she's going to be in a play based on The Fault in Our Stars. Why would she otherwise have to learn to speak in a British accent (she'd play Kaitlyn). Maybe she got to read the book in December to write a script / get the feel of the book to be able to play her part. And a play would only be exciting for Dutch nerdfighers, since other people wouldn't be able to watch it (too long way to travel / not understanding the language). Just speculating :)

  • @ooliviah wow... I must say I would have never come up with this theory! Very interesting (:

  • my book arrived today and i read it in one go, yes i should have been revising for my GCSE and yes i am very tired but no i do not regret it. it is signed in purple sharpie and is hanklerfished too!!!!! i was so excited when i found that out i squeled.

  • Ahhhh, so freaking excited to read this!!!

    (Where is my copy!?)

  • I giggled to myself when I saw that. (Names) Also, I had my mom try and pronounce both of them, I was giggling so much as she pronounced Lidewij the same way that Hazel thinks it's pronounced in the book. :)

Also, I finished it in one go, too. I was up extremely late, but I've come to terms with that. And I, obviously, loved it.

  • First of all, lovelovelove this book. I finished it in two and a half hours. Secondly, I like listening to your reviews especially because your accent makes me miss Holland. It's cute. :)

  • My copy came today and it was waiting for me when I got home :D. It's signed with purple sharpie and that makes me even happier because purple is one of my favourite colours :DD

  • you got me psyched for this book!

I'm gonna buy it as soon as I can :)

  • omfg i just got it today! its signed with red sharpie! i'm so happy :')

  • This book was incredible. I read it in four hours in one go, which is (like you) unusual for me! I cried for probably over half the book... and I nearly cried with happiness at one point to. No book has ever stuck with me so much, made me think so much as TFiOS. John Green is brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

  • 'doei' (= It's so awesome your name and Lidewijs name are kinda in the book.

Excited for March now!! can't wait..

  • I can't wait to read it <333

  • also, that name thing is awesome :D

  • Can't wait till I get my copy!! It actually was shipped early (on december 20th) but hasn't arrived. I hope they hurry!

  • My book isn't here yet aaaaah why do i not live in America? Ps. how come you have already read it?? I live in The Netherlands as well ;S?

  • that is very awesome, your names in the book!

  • Jij hebt echt de leukste achternaam ooit!!

  • Can't wait to read it! :) And completely totally off topic and very non-interesting perhaps, but what is that gorgeous lipcolour you're wearing? :)

  • @GgirlMe It is the very high end and exclusive NYC lip stain in Smooch Proof.

  • @booksandquills oeh, very chic! Awesome, thanks :)

  • @GgirlMe (You can find it for... €2/3 at Kruidvat)

  • @booksandquills Or, in my weird drugstores, Trekpleister (cuz Kampen just don't make no sense :p )

  • @booksandquills I'm wearing that lip stain too! Yay for good cheapo make up. Very excited to read TFIOS and I'd be giddy and squealing too if a character in a novel was named after me!

  • @lidewij awesome thumbnail :D

  • I haven't read it yet, but that's only because my copy hasn't arrived yet. I'm in Canada, and amazon.ca says it will ship on the 14th.

  • I can't bear to read the last chapter! I don't want it to end!

  • Can't wait to finally get it.. Sadly, I live in Switzerland so shipping is slooooow. :D

  • what is her accent? i can't place it.

  • I bought this book on the day of the release the 10. of January and was so happy. But it was also the day I was told that my stepmom has breast cancer. So life is really an ironic bitch but I'm happy I bought the book, because it is helping me through it. Aaaand I am definitely falling in love with Augustus just as you fall asleep: slowly and then all at once.

  • i cried about three times while reading this book

  • i actually found a website who sells this book in indonesia. going to be my first john green book ever, but I suppose I should order it from all the reviews I've been watching/reading. loved this review, keep it up :)

  • I can't wait to read this book! :D

  • I can't wait!

  • All of the feels is what I believe I was feeling. So very good.

  • I also read it in one sitting. just yesterday. I must admit, there was definitely a lump in my throat and some tears to be fought back at some points. I even bought a second copy of it the next day so I can gift it while still keeping a copy for myself.

  • DID YOU CALL MY THUMBNAIL WEIRD?!! *cries in a corner*

Also, I'm in alllll of agreement with everything you say in this video. So there.

  • This book. I can't even.

  • us know eachother so well that they have that deep of a connection, and that it was an authoritative ploy by John to present that, but that seems a little far fetched to me. Regardless of all of this, I will still read the book with pleasure, and it may change my opinion. Sorry that was so long winded, I kind of had to get it out there though. Hope to here a reply

  • ed to happen too quickly, and I wasn't a huge fan of it honestly. There's also the fact that the dialog between Hazel and Augustus is much too planned, much too unrealistic. I've found this in a few other of John's books, but it seems almost too much this time. I know the kids in his books are supposed to be intelligent, but even intelligent kids don't speak in such a sophisticated manor in friendly conversation, but mostly in thought. You could pin this on the fact that maybe Hazel and August

  • y cracked it open. Admittedly, I'm only halfway through it, but there are a few things I dislike about the book. I realize that this book is trying to depict the struggles of cancer, but too many things seem much to convenient. I hate to give spoilers, but I sort of have to point out something. So.. 'spoiler alert'. When Hazel told Augustus that she was 'a grenade' and that they could no longer see each other, she conveniently became too deoxygenated within a short time span. All of it just seem

  • Before I verbalize my opinion, I'd like to say that a.) I love John, his previous works, and his videos; b.) I'm relatively new to Nerdfighteria, c.) I never knew Esther (which may incline me to miss out on a large amount of nostalgia), and, most importantly, d.) I am in no way trying to bash TFIOS. Now here's my honest opinion. I had very high expectations for this book. The initial chapters John read on Vlogbrothers made me anticipate its arrival. Upon receiving the book in the mail, I promptl

  • I cant wait to get this book.

  • where i can get a copy of that book !? because im from mexico

  • I'm sooo excited to read this! I actually canceled my preorder b/c I am going to the tour de nerdfighting on Saturday, and I had to buy a copy to go, and while two copies of something are never a bad thing, I just didn't have the extra cash! Thanks so much for the video! It made me reaaallllyyyy excited to read it!

  • i read mine in one go as well!

ahh, i'm actually headed to amsterdam for march and april and tfios made it all the more exciting. would you happen to have any recommendations for a nerdfighter going to the netherlands?

  • I feel the same why about how he described some parts of Indianapolis!

  • @PlasticChopstickUser aha, as a hoosier i agree.

  • I JUST FINISHED READING TIFIOS LIKE 2HOURS AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (apologies for the screaming, my enthusiasm about this book, and your videos, is great)

  • I love what you said about the characters being full. I can't quite put it to words either, but that is how I felt. John Green has a way of creating such realistic teenage characters.

I loved how the book ended. I felt like John left us in a place much like Von Houten left Hazel. A major part of me wants to know what happened to her. Also, did you notice the overwhelming mention of the color blue?

  • I also absolutely loved the book and ordered the audio book with him reading it, i am excited to hear him read it! :D great review!

  • Your English is super awesome! I knew you were dutch when I subscribed, but it was amazes me how good your English is. And this was indeed one of the BEST books I have read in like a year and it was so cool just reading it because there were lots of great things in it! This is a great review as well! :]

    Best Wishes,

    Nina <3

  • My book just shipped. I'm SO excited. Amazon says it'll be here tomorrow, and my mom says I can't have it until I've finished all of my college applications, so I haven't slept in a few days now. I want my book when it comes...

  • I love how you say Augustus.

  • my book was shipped yesterday! YAY! but it wont actually get here till the 18th of Febuary... :( damn you amazon and your international shipping!

  • @jaybakeable mines not even getting shipped out until the 16th :'(

  • finished my (hanklerfished!) copy about an hour ago. there is some serious business going on in my brain right now. I agree, the characters in tFiOS were just amazing. so awesome. so so awesome. WHOOF.

  • i've never hated amazon this much

  • Still no tfios in my mailbox... :(

  • ALL OF THIS. Yes.

    It's such a beautiful book.

  • Still don't have mine yet. argh. I almost hurt the FedEx man who showed up today with a parcel NOT containing my book.

  • Everyone's been getting this book! The story sounds really interesting, I might just end up getting it too! Great review =)

  • My friend got it yesterday, while I didn't even get it today. Um, Amazon? We live in the same town. AND I PRE-ORDERED IT LIKE FOUR MONTHS AGO! She waited until last minute! *envious friend is upset*

  • "don't forget to be awesome" never do! ;)

  • Just two more days...

  • I'm definitely going to check this book out - hearing so many things about it! Great review as usual Sanne :)

  • i couldn't watch this because i knew that i wouldn't be able to listen to someone who has read it but im commenting because i think you amazing

  • Duuude, are you friends with John!?

  • I want to have mine NOW! but I dont :(

  • the bookstore thinks my book will be there tomorrow, so i'm hoping it will be, I'd like to be able to read it over the weekend :)

  • I love this book so much. I love Augustus and Hazel present-tense, and this book has made me strive to live more metaphorically. I don't want to spoil anything, but this book is Capital B; Beautiful.

  • I cried. So much. I haven't STOPPED crying and I finished the books hours ago.

  • I really need to nab a copy ASAP!

  • I can't wait until February for my copy!

  • I didn't think I would get this book because of how disappointing Looking for Alaska was, but based on your review, I think I might see. So yeah. :V

  • Your last name is fantastic xD

  • Aaahh I adored this book so much, and while I was reading it, I was actually inspired to write some of my own philosophical prose (if anything written by a 17 year old can be considered philosophical). Anyway, excellent and accurate review, although I really want you to comment on some of the awesome details in this book. (There were so many!!)

  • Well I read Looking for Alaska over Christmas and loved. So I proceeded to read it twice more. Excessive but I found it had a profound effect on me.

My copy isnt here yet, hoping for Friday! Also the day that I am picking up Paper Towns... basically I sense a fantastic weekend coming my way.

  • I have never n my life heard another non American speaker (other than myself) who have completely eliminated there accent so awesome!!! I have worked on my English for as long as I can remember and I was constantly told what a miserable accent i had! so I became determent to be the best English speaker amongst my friends. I will have to say I had never been in the US up until recently. And my English is as good as any American, could you shear your story with me I would really like to hear it!

  • Great review! I finished the book this morning, and I was an absolute mess of emotions. Really the sort of book that sticks with you too and stays in your head. Plot wise, it's quiet, with less of the wild escapades of some of the others. But it was so powerful, and the characters were so wonderful and endearing that I couldn't stop reading until I finished. Best Wishes!

  • I got the book about three hours ago and am already half way through that says a lot. So far it's perfect, it's better than I expected, which is saying a lot as I was expecting a lot from it.

  • So, a few things. I'm new to your channel and have been wondering about your accent. Dutch may be one of my favorite. Right behind Irish and in front of Australian.

Also, I agree with you review of the book and John Green's writing.

  • I, too, was privileged to read it back in December and I really want to read it again, but I won't get my copy until I see John in Atlanta on Sunday. But I am so excited to see him! Great review :)

  • Wait... what's happening in March?

  • @roelvantoorn SECRET THINGS.

  • I was one of the few that got a leaked copy from Barnes and Noble, and I had to put all of the effort in the world to not have read it until yesterday.

  • can you do a book review with spoilers?

  • I don't get my copy until March :(

  • I can't wait until my copy arrives!

  • So pumped for my copy to arrive! It should be here by Friday, according to Amazon. Thanks for not spoiling it either. :)

  • i am always so early on your videos it creeps me out!

  • Thank you so much for being spoiler free! I picked it up yesterday (hanklerfish and Yeti free)!

  • in*

  • I can't wait until I get my copy! I've got my fingers crossed for a Hanklerfish!
