Back in 1976 when Yuri Belenco flew his Mig 25 to northern Japan&he came to America. He was shocked at the relitive low numbers of alcoholics in the USA. He said that 3/4 of the Soviet population back in them days were alcoholic. Part of the reason that the USSR fell 15 years later was because of drinking.

they drink so damn much in russia. you see people standing at a bus stop on the way to work and they're chugging down a can or bottle. friend of mine stayed in russia for a while and it got too much, and the only socially acceptable excuse for turning down a drink is that you're a recovering alcoholic, so she had to tell everyone that.
