Thanks...the comment below about the side door saved me! The last time I brought the vacuum into Oreck they tightened on of the bottom panel screws so tight I couldn't get it off. Looks like the belt slipped off the roller from too much dust! You guys saved me a trip to Oreck plus $100+
Thanks for the very helpful video. Maybe there IS a side door that is supposed to be opened, technically ( I have no idea), but if the belt has to be stretched around the shaft anyway, and this gets the job done, I don't know why it would matter! The vacuum now works great, btw!!
I used the above video to see how to "roll" the belt onto the spool. I was having difficulty. Yes mine has a side door and that's how I replaced my belt, but the above video did help me in how to roll the belt on. I thought I was doing it wrong. I used a flathead screwdriver to help turn the spool and it worked like a charm. I knew it was the belt from the stink it put out. After a new belt I still have odor. Any ideas?
You will do yourself a favor if you buy a Dyson. I've owned and sold Kirby's, owned an Oreck and bought a Dyson. The Oreck is very cheaply built and is a horrible excuse for a carpet cleaner. The Dyson although more expensive is solidly built and you'll go about 4 years before making a belt replacement. You can see the results of your efforts both by observing the see thru canister and by looking at your carpet. It appears that the color of our carpet shows a significant improvement. Buy a Dyson
@spacecowboy98 oh sure a vacuum completely made of cheap plastic is solid! dysons are terrible! especially the $75 cheap plastic roller brush and ridiculous $150 belt replacement! oreck's dominate dyson! especially the oreck xl21 with a 21 year warranty with 21 free annual tuneups. dyson doesn't offer anything like that! plus they showed a 7,000 lb truck run over that oreck and it still worked like new and one that survived a hurricane! u dont believe me? go on oreckdirect's channel and see it.
@mhtube01 When we had an Oreck I was changing the belt about every other week because it would melt on that stainless steel spindle and make the whole house smell of burnt rubber. On top of that my daughter who's duty it was to vacuum seem to know what to do to break the Oreck so I'd have to fix it before she vacuumed the house. Orecks are light and do a descent job of cleaning but Orecks are fragile and made of very weak plastic. sorry mhtube01 you can't convince me otherwise.
@mhtube01 We let our daughter take the Oreck when she graduated and haven't seen it since. Our Kenmore vacuum is sitting out in the garage doing the cannister and bare floor job that I would have liked to have seen our Oreck do. The Kenmore is now more than 15 years old and I haven't replaced the belt on it for about 3 years now. And the paper bag is easily purchased on ebay at a price that Sears wouldn't dare sell for delivered to my mailbox. The Kenmore is awesome because it takes a punishment
@mhtube01 And my Kirby is still out in the garage also and his job is to clean the filter of my Sears wet/dry shop vac. I still have all of the cannister attachments and occassionally use it to vacuum out our cars.
But our Dyson is a real winner in the house. It can magically turn into a cannister sucking up spider webs in the corners up by the ceilings, getting the loose dog hair under low furniture and push a button to release and another to drop the hinged door and all of the dirt is gone!
@mhtube01 Our Dyson is made of the kind of plastic that they make those transformer toys out of. You know the type the kids twist and pound and abuse turning it from a truck into a planet saving robacon day after day after day. So convenient to operate once you get the hang of it and so stylishly multi-colored and contemporary it isn't a shame to pull it out and clean right in front of your guests. The belt? We've had the Dyson for almost 3 years haven't seen a belt. Guess we'll find out soon.
@breeze787 well it sounds like u guys had a bad experience or something. i too had that belt problem a few years ago so i took the vacuum into the store for a tune up and they immediately told me that something had broken. whatever they replaced it with seems to be much sturdier cause i havent had a single problem since. ive just had it tuned up so it's in top shape. it works magic for me and i love my oreck! i've had bad vacuum experiences in the past but fortunately the oreck has changed that!
@breeze787 Is your dyson made in America? No, but my oreck is. Do you realize Oreck is the only company left still making vacuums in the U.S.A. Dysons are garbage all your paying for is the name. They are honestly the most overhyped, overpriced vacuums on the market. 150 bucks to replace a belt, $75 to replace a cheap plastic roller brush, you're a sucker lol. Have fun with your $500 fisher price toy.
I have installed the belts like this and it just burns right through them. We are taking it in for service this weekend, and if they can't fix it, we will throw it out and go buy a Sears-Kenmore!
That might work also, but it's the wrong way of replacing the belt. Orecks have a side door that requires the removal of one screw so you can open it and replace the belt (follow the instructions manual).

Sounds like its time for a New Roller Brush. You local dealer can fix you up on that.

@mike2moto hahahaha enjoy the kmart lifestyle, orec dyson miele and riccar are the only vac's you should ever bother with, real quality.

True, but if you have a problem with your roller, you can't really get to it through the side door.
