The "nationwide survey" of 113,597 doctors that R.J. Reynolds initially conducted in 1947 was "compromised" by the fact that ALL the doctors in that survey were sent free samples of Camels before the question "What cigarette do YOU smoke, Doctor?" was officially asked. Now, how do YOU think they would have answered that question if they hadn't received any samples?
Good stuff! My wife and I were born in '47 also. What a great year! My birthday, Dec 27, 1947, was the day Howdy Doody premiered. Also, the snowstorm that hit NYC that day stood as the worst in NY history until a couple years ago, when the record was broken. Nice job you did for your dad.
Aw. This is so sweet that you did this for your dad. My dad died exactly one year ago, a little less than one month after his 61st birthday. He loved old time radio and old comics and fantasy and sci-fi mags. He loved The Spirit. I just got a tattoo of the Spirit in honor of him so that his "spirit" is always with me. Thanks for posting this. Your dad is a lucky guy. :)
Nice but no cigar. In 1947, Jackie Robinson would not have been referred to the first "African American". he would have been referred to as the first Negro. No one used "African American" in 1947.
True, but I wasn't going to go there. Cigarette ads on a family program are one thing, but if I used that term, I'd have all sorts of hate posts against me here.
@ESHbyESH Then, in that case your recreation is politically correct and therefore doesn't reflect a real newscast from 1947. If people can't accept how the past was, then they are ignorant to history. Negro is not a bad word nor derogatory. UNCF still uses the word "negro" in their title. It's time to stop caving in to PC.
Excellent idea to do this for your dad. Hope he enjoyed it thoroughly. Well researched, I thought, in spite of some of the comments you've gotten.

"HOWDY DOODY" originally appeared as "PUPPET PLAYHOUSE" when it premiered on December 27, 1947. It wasn't titled "HOWDY DOODY" until early '49.

Yeah, it did come out kinda dull and dry. It was a big hit at the party, tho. Also, skip to 3:33 for the sponsors message.
