  • Wow. As someone who's just getting started this is really spectacular to see.

  • Very good instruction and skills, There is nothing as sweet as the sound of a sharp plane.

  • Great vid on how to saw out a dovetail! But I would have just used sandpaper instead of a planer...

  • @KevKevAllen I would have used a Mallet, or a piece of scrap wood with the hammer. Just Nit picking very good video.

  • thats a 3 min dovetale, and he`s not even worked up

  • Does he have a licence for those guns!?

  • at least someone had the decency to lay that plane flat instead of leaving it sitting on the blade

  • You have obviosly done these before..Great job!

  • Can I come to your class!!! :)

  • could you explain the measurements for me please also was that a japanese hand saw thanks

  • exelente video facil esacto rapido y muy bien detallado

  • I'd like to see it again with a little less noise and arms in the way.

  • damn that guy must have at least a couple grand in his shirt pocket at 3:45

  • there is a quick and accurate way of marking the width of the dovetails, I tried it and it worked. put the bits of wood in the vice, vertical and lined up exactly behind each other and mark where you are going to cut the dovetails on one of the bits of wood, then draw a line down all the bits of wood ,resulting in not just marking them all at once ,but also (if they are exactly behind each other) when you cut the dovetails they will be very accurate to each other

  • I was looking for a video on using a jig with my router to make dovetails. After seeing this video, I saw how simple it can be (with lots of practice I'm sure) to make dovetails. A lot of the projects I do have been collecting old wood furniture and disassembling, fixing and rebuilding to make them look new. This is truly an art as demonstrated by this video. I know it will take me many hours of practice to achieve the level of skill demonstrated. Thanks for the video.

  • At what degree should I start when making the tails?

  • The surroundings are noisy.

  • @perto75

    well observed...

  • I can cut the joints but just can't chisel the bits out neatly, and they don't fit together very well either.

  • I have no idea what you look like, but the way you cut that dovetail was seriously attractive.

This is why women like men who work with their hands: their confidence.

  • Nice Porn.

  • You could define the word "Satisfaction" with handmade dovetails that fit perfectly.

  • This is precious information . A great way to make dovetails . No powertools . No jigs . Just common sense .

  • How much harder is it to create an obtuse angled dovetailed joint such as a small splayed leg bench would use?

  • amazing... now I am not as intimidated by dovetail joints.

  • Speaking of sharp tools, an old woodworking guy sharpened my chisels. Now

they are razor sharp and very easy to use. There's quite a difference between "sharp" and "old woodworking guy sharp".

I just have to watch my fingers 'cause you don't even feel the blade slicing into you until it's too late.

  • @Funkussionist how sharp is a razor? Razor sharp is a relative term which is often missused for paper cutting-sharp...

  • nice. that plane looked like a joy to use

  • Question :

Is there an inner and outer side for the wood? I read somewhere that planks were likely to move (with time and external conditions) towards one direction, and this should be taken into account when assembling a door for instance. Is it relevant for a smaller scale such as a drawer?

    Thanks for the video.

  • Brilliant video, thanks for that, really speedy method to make a dovetail joint.

  • brilliant. how nice to have such a great skill such as yourself. im a beginning woodworker, and think that having these abilities are priceless. why buy something crummy at ikea, made of particle board, when you can build something yourself, that is of infinitely better quality, and likely half the cost, in the long run (after youve got your tools). thanks for the vid.

  • Thank you , i would love to hone my skills to your level

  • This is good, but have you seen John Bullar cut fine dovetails on you tube - wow

  • First off, nothing wrong with this.

Fletchtap: If you aren't good enough just remove the bulk of the waste with a coping saw. Chisel back to the line. Most joints in woodwork can be cut with a sharp (repeat sharp) saw. Why fiddle with chisels and shoulder-planes, and all the other gizmos the toolmakers want you to buy!

And that interfering twit who repositioned the plane, should have had his knuckles rapped for touching someone else's gear without permission.

  • not if your good enough trust me a flexible enough coping saw blade can do the trick and olny seriously good pros can use a chisel to carve out an even dovetail on both sides of the joints, its easier to make a tighter than normal fit to a dovetail joint and to hammer it into place then to try a chisel, and yes glue is pretty much preffered if you want the joint to last a long time, wood glue doesnt cost that much

  • Is it always necessary to glue dovetails or when the joints are tight enough can you skip the glue?

  • I live across the street from where this is made. I am not a member of their group but I have seen up close and in person, their craftsmanship. Basically, until you see the finished product, you might want to curb the critical comments.

  • I hate to sound like I'm gushing, but this is an impressive and inspiring demonstration of skills. Thank you for posting it.

  • im new too wood working and im impressed with how fast he done the dovetail joint with no power tools, wow, thats really awesome, the traditional way.

  • mate, if your impressed with that search up Rob Cosman on you tube and watch his 3 1/2 minute dovetail. he actualy does it right.

  • that is ridiculous, how can you get a straight line ith a coping saw. You should be using a chisel.

  • im matt ried, i live in kempsey. i live eat breath and shit timber. i can create a dovetail joint with 4mm tails blind folded and with both hands tied behind my back. ask mr samoluk if you dnt belive me,i am currently building my house using only a hammer a saw and dovetail joints, nothing more nothing less, and a spoon to eat my yogos and make cement

    i love timber

  • Knocking the joint together with a hammer? :p Shouldnt there have been a bit of waste timber used to protect the wood? I know he planed it down afterwards, but still.

  • that video really shows how simple it is to do a dovetail.. with skills.. and not with expensive jigs and tools..

I loved it.. it shows how peaceful woodworking can be ;) noiseless :)
