The way he looks backafter the fall tells alot too; hes CONCERNED!! The look he gives when he hears that Charles wanted to marry Anne; WOW is that jealousy/curiousity maybe? BTW; NO she didn't refuse Charles cause of Lady Russell; she refused him cause of Federick. She has to suffer in silence!!
it must have been very hard to live being a maid in those days. now it is not so hard when your time is busy and you date a lot, still for someone who's all friends are getting married and you are over 30 it is heartbreaking, that's the case of a very good friend of mine.
@amoge yes indeed, however keeping her feelings bottled up, neither helped her nor the captain. by hiding her true feelings, she lost capt.wentworth once.
@rbain007 All three Miss Bates that I have seen talk the same way...all directors must think of Miss bates Exactly the same...a very well written character, I must say.
you guys take it that he lifted her on the carriage as romantic but you are blind to see that it is a means to be rid of her so that he wouldnt have accompany her presence nor think about her. as the saying goes "out of sight out of mind"
@strawberryredberry actually its quite the opposite...he put her on the carriage not to get rid of her but because he still cares about her...remember that she just fell even though the fall didnt seem much...in the novel she was unable to walk faster cuz she hurt her ankle during the fall and sooo he made his sister and brother-in-law to suggest her for a ride home...but when she insisted he picked her up and made her go!
@heart127 yes but u are forgetting that right now at the moment hes angry and resents her for letting others persuade her to not marry him he doesnt realizes her kind and loving nature until later right now hes fuming so if you dont mind i am right and u r wrong but u r entitled to ur own opinion
@strawberryredberry haha "so if you dont mind i am right and u r wrong but u r entitled to ur own opinion" how can opinions b right from wrong?! opinions r held by everyone doesnt mean they r right....its wat u think! ur not right about wat u said cuz ur not the writer of the novel so u cant really say "im right and ur wrong"...its ur opinion!just saying...i just shared my opinion w/u but didnt tell " i am right and u r wrong" think bout it
@strawberryredberry I always thought that he was mostly concerned about her condition, but to some degree I think his physically putting her on the carriage in the midst of her self-effacing protests is his way of asserting the firmness of decision that Anne lacks and that he resents her for lacking. I may be reading too much into that scene, but the way it is acted makes me think that he is at least slightly ticked at her lack of assertion. But I think it's still mostly out of care for her.
@bakerstreetbookworm Watch at 4:33 to 4:36 he tells his sister to offer her ride, because she is hurt and he still cares deeply for her. If you read Jane Austen's book Persuasion you will see that this is true.
@pnp6408 I've read it twice! :) And you're right, that is certainly the reason in the book, and most likely the reason in the movie as well. I just thought there could be an extra layer there in the film, maybe added by the actor, just because of his somewhat brusque manner of helping her.
@bakerstreetbookworm I agree; I think he put her in the carriage because of the fall; and knows shes tired; and wants to make sure shes not put out. But; I agree; the way he puts he in the carriage; is an indecasion hes still mad about her lacking..
@SelenaMulan You're totally right - if you listen REALLY closely (I listened with headphones, so maybe that helped) you can hear him tell his sister, "Anne's had a fall, can you take her home?" or something quite similar.
@strawberryredberry which is totally why he writes an impassioned letter to her and they get married..because he hates her and wants to get rid of her...totally plausible...
Am I the only one who found it very sexy when he gently but forcefully led her to the carriage and put her on it?! I must have watched that clip at least ten times before I continued!
We may be living in the wrong generation as far as gallentry and romance went. On the other hand... women often made horribly unhappy marriage from which there was NO escape and she was trapped for love in a loveless and often violent and degrading relationship.
Such a man MUST exist? Right??? A well done job, by such a handsome man...most certainly one of my most favorites...I love the scene where Anne slips and falls...he is right there by her side, as though he had been watching her all along. It was about the 20th time I watched Persuasion, before I ever caught Wentworth quickly speaking with his sister about taking Anne home, as she was hurt...that small scene, still takes my breath away...
I know this is going to sound ridiculous amongst all the 'fancying Captain Wentworth' and love comments but Anne's hair is far to severe. I really want to loosen it. I always assumed the hair was much softer around the face back in those days.
He may have still been angry & hurt but every time he thought she was hurt physically, he dropped his pride, & was right there for her both times. I loved his silent strength & loving concern. He never had to say a word. I love those qualities in a Man more than anything.
"still.. he cannot be unfeeling..he cannot see me suffer without wishing to give relief..to spare the proof of his own good, warm and aimiable heart, which i cannot contemplate, without infinate pain.. and regret.."
i love the awkward glances between Wentworth and captain Harville when wentworth is introducing everyone and he reaches Anne. Evidently, Harville has heard plenty about Anne before.
@ LivingintheShire I think he first thought or hoped it was for him but because he is told about lady Russel's interference, he is convinced of the contrary bcos it's like a repetition of the past for him and it confirms what he thinks of Anne. He should have realized that if Charles is not good enough for Anne then why would her family and friends didn't object to Mary marrying him... No matter how u look at it, Anne is the least loved of the sisters and if her father had approved then lady R
The way she walk onto the log and hoping Fredrick won't look back and watch her struggle by herself. The fall is priceless and she is like, " omg I fell into the creek" don't look at him don't look at him." lollllllllllll
jane austen is extremely good at making some of the silliest people in her novels, ie mary in persuasion, mrs bennet in pride and prejudice the real catalysts for getting the lovers together. for some reason i find the captain harville in this version very attractive. i think its the eyes i like.
The part where Louisa is talking about how Charles wanted to marry Anne, I don't really understand Wentorth's reaction: Does he think Anne refused Charles because she's still in love with him, or does he think that Anne's refusal is just another example of her being "easily persuaded"?
that part where Captain Wentworth lifts her and puts her on the carriage, that's not in the book is it? Also the part where Anne falls at the beginning of this part, that wasn't in the book either was it? I don't remember there being any physical contact like that in the book.
@angelmist15 I know that, during the carriage scene, he suggests to his sister that they bring Anne home. That's his galantry in that part of the book. As for the part where she falls, I'm not sure. I'm rereading the book now, so I'll know soon enough. :-)
@F00173141 Perhaps it's showing that although Anne thinks Wentworth is still angry and annoyed at her for the past (which he sort of still is), he does still care about her and her well-being/ safety, and so he keeps an eye on her and immediately goes to see if she is alright after her fall (he's the first one there :) so cute).
@angelmist15 Oh yes. There's no question of the screenplay writer's intention in adding that part, and it is a lovely little part. I love how obviously attentive he is to her, even when he's telling himself that he's completely indifferent. And to answer your original question, now that I've read through that part of the book again...he does hand her into the carriage, but I doubt he bodily sets her there, and the part where she falls is not in at all. But again, I'm not complaining.
@cinthialopez1 It makes it even more relatable that she isn't extremely handsome! I wouldn't like this movie as much if she was! It would just take away some of the depth to this somehow. She being so...plain, (Though pretty, in her own way) Makes this all the better. It allows everyone to find themselves in her character.
And sure, her hair is a bit ridiculous, but look away from that and enjoy this beautiful story! The hair hardly matters!
When Louisa said "There is Winthrop!", I said aloud "Where?" And then two minutes later she says "Oh look, they've brought Charles Hayter with them" and I'm thinking "How is that possible? That was fast!"
It seems very odd that Charles didn't help Anne. he helped Henrietta and Mary. he could see Anne, he seems concerned for Anne at other times, why not here?
Wentworth you dirtyold fox, i saw your hand slide over Anne´s hip when you put her on that carriage, yeah, i saw that :D I bet he didn´t wash that hand this day ;D
I can see the resemblance, especially when Sally Hawkins looks into the camera. They do look as if they are sisters from another mother of another color!
When Captain Wentworth makes the introductions and says "Miss Elliot" and Capitain Harville says "Miss Anne Elliot?", I halfway expected him to follow it with "THE Miss Anne Elliot? He indeed knows this love & loss story.
@NoelleHarmony I wondered why the other character's never picked up on how Capt. Harville knew about Anne. It's as if Anne isn't even there. No one even thinks "Hmmmmm, how about Anne and Frederick" because they are so self absorbed.
I know I love that part Lilithly!! I know Divinesaira!! You know its surprising he hates her (supposedly) SOO much and yet he helps her and arranges for her to ride with his sister and brother-in-law!! I know; if u look at his face u can tell; he's wondering if she didn't marry Charles because of him!! The music is LOVELY!!
Don't you think that Frederick looked as though he wanted to get rid of Anne the way he put her on that carriage. I don't know but that's how it seemed to me.
@chevycheckonit ah but you are mistaken you see, he put her on the carriage for the opposite reason, she had a strained ankle and instead of her hurting anymore, he placed her there because he wanted her to go home and rest it and not be in pain. It only seems like he is getting rid of her becaause he is thorn for two reasons; he still loves Anne and does not want her to be hurt but at the same time the internal debate is stating that she should walk and not be regarding with such kindness
@chevycheckonit because she hurt him and he would want to see her go through the pain that he did but what he doens't realize is that his very being in her presence is causing her the same amount of pain that she caused eight years ago. The very idea that he will be with her sister's sister-in law brakes her heart but she can not get past her pride to explain this to her sister, Mary.
@chevycheckonit If you look at when his sister and brother-in-law come up he tells his sister that Anne is hurt and since he knows she is too humble to ask for help he puts her on the buggy, so she won't be in any pain... that's the way I see it lol :)
@chevycheckonit There's numerous suggestions here. He could have cared about her sprained ankle and didn't want her to walk. He also wanted to get rid of Anne in the sense that her presence brings back bad memories from the past.
@LCMac3 It wasnt to get rid of her for the bad memories at all, the man cared for her well being, he always had, hence arranging the transport for her.
I watched "The Jane Austen Book Club", and at the end, when Prudie was telling her husband what Persuasion was about, she was very incorrect, I wonder if that Actress has read it all. She said it was about two people that used to be in love but arent anymore. They most assuredly are still in love, they never stopped.
Why did Charles not offer to help Anne walk across? She's a lady and he's a gentleman. But I did love how Captain Wentworth was right there to help Anne up when she fell. He was further ahead than Charles was so I imagine that he had to have run past Charles to get to her!
@Honoracharity18 Very well, if that's the hang of it, never let it be said that FellowTownsman has ever been unfair or mean spirited to a lady.
And yes, like your friends i know a few men who love, cherish and are devoted to their women before themselves. They also like playing and watching football and having a beer mind, but we can be romantic as well, but no offences, we wouldnt get very far in life without each other, my good lady. Good health.
I hope he will forgive her. After all, she regreted her choice. I would say ' I'm really, truly sorry for what happened 8 years ago. I am still deeply in-love with you. I hope you'll forgive me.' Thats what i would say to him.
What torture! I don't think I could stand that constant reminder of the horrible choice I made... And not even being able to tell anyone what happened...
What torture! I don't think I could stand that constant reminder of the horrible choice I had made... And not even being able to tell anyone what happened...
LOL, the way he just grabbed her, very propriety hold there. And then lifted her and dropped her on the chair. He is a navy man, he has no time for nonsense.
So ridiculous hearing Mary say that it's most unpleasant to have such "connections" while she keeps fumbling with her coat in a most unladylike manner and is constantly bent over instead of maintaining an upright posture....
The buggy scene is my favorite, I have keep watching it! Another point I was thinking about with the buggy scene is this: Charles was refused by Anne as well, and married someone else, Which is the book Wentworth's plan was to " Marry anyone but Anne Elliot" Charles married someone whom he seldom saw eye with eye with, so that was put before him as well.
I always thought that Captain Wentworth was jealous in the scene when he puts her in the buggy. In the book she is tired and is walking on one side of Charles and Mary on the other.. and Charles and Mary are fighting. Hearing Charles preferred Anne in the scene before that, It was proved to him! I think there was more to play with that then just knowing she was tired.
Ha! So not true. Where men are concerned my brain functions like that of an elephant. Throughout my life I found men to be the fickle ones - can't trust'em as far as you can throw'em. Have to go with Austen's Darcy on this one: My good opinion once lost, is lost forever...
@sageg16 I think he wished he didn't have to introduce her. Not because she was insignificant, but because of the enormous impact her refusal had been when he first went to sea and met his two friends. The fact that Harville knew her first name shows that he knows Wentworth's and Anne's history. Wentworth knows that Anne's presence will have his friends making all kinds of assumptions and that they will assault him with questions the first chance they get.

And sure, her hair is a bit ridiculous, but look away from that and enjoy this beautiful story! The hair hardly matters!
Just my opinion!

When Louisa said "There is Winthrop!", I said aloud "Where?" And then two minutes later she says "Oh look, they've brought Charles Hayter with them" and I'm thinking "How is that possible? That was fast!"
NoelleHarmony 8 months ago 3
It seems very odd that Charles didn't help Anne. he helped Henrietta and Mary. he could see Anne, he seems concerned for Anne at other times, why not here?

When Captain Wentworth makes the introductions and says "Miss Elliot" and Capitain Harville says "Miss Anne Elliot?", I halfway expected him to follow it with "THE Miss Anne Elliot? He indeed knows this love & loss story.
NoelleHarmony 10 months ago 32
@NoelleHarmony I wondered why the other character's never picked up on how Capt. Harville knew about Anne. It's as if Anne isn't even there. No one even thinks "Hmmmmm, how about Anne and Frederick" because they are so self absorbed.

I know; if u look at his face u can tell; he's wondering if she didn't marry Charles because of him!! The music is LOVELY!!

Don't you think that Frederick looked as though he wanted to get rid of Anne the way he put her on that carriage. I don't know but that's how it seemed to me.
chevycheckonit 11 months ago 3
@chevycheckonit Or cared for her due to her strained ankle perhaps.
FellowTownsman 11 months ago
@chevycheckonit ah but you are mistaken you see, he put her on the carriage for the opposite reason, she had a strained ankle and instead of her hurting anymore, he placed her there because he wanted her to go home and rest it and not be in pain. It only seems like he is getting rid of her becaause he is thorn for two reasons; he still loves Anne and does not want her to be hurt but at the same time the internal debate is stating that she should walk and not be regarding with such kindness
halistra24 11 months ago
@chevycheckonit because she hurt him and he would want to see her go through the pain that he did but what he doens't realize is that his very being in her presence is causing her the same amount of pain that she caused eight years ago. The very idea that he will be with her sister's sister-in law brakes her heart but she can not get past her pride to explain this to her sister, Mary.
halistra24 11 months ago
@chevycheckonit If you look at when his sister and brother-in-law come up he tells his sister that Anne is hurt and since he knows she is too humble to ask for help he puts her on the buggy, so she won't be in any pain... that's the way I see it lol :)
MsLizeth26 11 months ago
@chevycheckonit There's numerous suggestions here. He could have cared about her sprained ankle and didn't want her to walk. He also wanted to get rid of Anne in the sense that her presence brings back bad memories from the past.
LCMac3 10 months ago
@LCMac3 It wasnt to get rid of her for the bad memories at all, the man cared for her well being, he always had, hence arranging the transport for her.
FellowTownsman 10 months ago
I watched "The Jane Austen Book Club", and at the end, when Prudie was telling her husband what Persuasion was about, she was very incorrect, I wonder if that Actress has read it all. She said it was about two people that used to be in love but arent anymore. They most assuredly are still in love, they never stopped.

Anne's clothes are so drab.. D=
A real wall flower, but she is lovely.
Esty2326 11 months ago 2

So ridiculous hearing Mary say that it's most unpleasant to have such "connections" while she keeps fumbling with her coat in a most unladylike manner and is constantly bent over instead of maintaining an upright posture....
Spikesfeet 1 year ago
The buggy scene is my favorite, I have keep watching it! Another point I was thinking about with the buggy scene is this: Charles was refused by Anne as well, and married someone else, Which is the book Wentworth's plan was to " Marry anyone but Anne Elliot" Charles married someone whom he seldom saw eye with eye with, so that was put before him as well.

For some reason I really like Mary in this! The girl playing her is great!
TheMrsDubose 1 year ago
I always thought that Captain Wentworth was jealous in the scene when he puts her in the buggy. In the book she is tired and is walking on one side of Charles and Mary on the other.. and Charles and Mary are fighting. Hearing Charles preferred Anne in the scene before that, It was proved to him! I think there was more to play with that then just knowing she was tired.

Poor Captain Benwick is spot on.
A man does not forget a woman as readily as you forget us.
How very true.

@bengusandlex
Ha! So not true. Where men are concerned my brain functions like that of an elephant. Throughout my life I found men to be the fickle ones - can't trust'em as far as you can throw'em. Have to go with Austen's Darcy on this one: My good opinion once lost, is lost forever...

Whoa! Did anyone catch the way Mr. Wentworth introduced Anne to his friends? Like she was so insignificant. @ 8:10
sageg16 1 year ago
@sageg16 I think he wished he didn't have to introduce her. Not because she was insignificant, but because of the enormous impact her refusal had been when he first went to sea and met his two friends. The fact that Harville knew her first name shows that he knows Wentworth's and Anne's history. Wentworth knows that Anne's presence will have his friends making all kinds of assumptions and that they will assault him with questions the first chance they get.
